Adopted an 1873 Trap Door at the funshow today... bought a box of ammo, but at a buck and a half a shot I'm going to be rolling my own in short order. Time to get serious about casting my own bullets - in this case probably 500 to 600 grain roundnose. Although I can use smokeless powder safely, I just have to try it with BP and paper patches.
Luckily, since I'm headed back to work tomorrow I have about 6 months or so to research the matter.

congrats on the new purchase. When I read you were going to the show today I figured you would come home with a Walker.
You ought to get brass and make rounds with BP. I bet that thing slings a big hunk of lead.
What kind of sights does it have?

Thanks SunTzu....
Early sights on the trapdoor.
Also came home with a few other things - a broomhandle, a sig 220, and a walther PP. Did some swapping...
Very little BP stuff there.

Sounds like you ended up with a good haul from the Meadowview. What kind of Sig 220 did you get?

I made it home in time to meet Mark @ the gun show, and found him and builderwood walking around. Julez and I walked around with them for about an hour, purchasing small items to make our life on the road easier (a couple of gun pouches, a spinner target for Julez)..when Mark walks up with that springfield. It's in beautiful condition for a 104 year old rifle! Mark had it on his shoulder and was near-missing people as he turned to look at things on the tables, much to the amusement of myself and builderwood.
on another note, I managed to find an RFI bayonet for my ishapore Enfield.
Doughnut, what do you mean what kind of sig p220? am I missing something? Educate me!
Mark is now in Norfolk, in the sailor's pool so it might be a day or so before he answers posts, or it might be tonight!

+1, exactly my point, there are many to choose from and on topd of that you can ask if it was a West German P220, nickel, two-tone, 9mm P220, etc.
I'm some what of a Sig whore so I even get excited when someone else gets a Sig!:D

I guess that this will be the first time you've loaded for the 45/70?
Love this caliber!
I once had a Ruger #3 (stolen in '03) and I currently have a Gibbs bolt action made from a 1945 Lithgow SMLE #III* in 45/70. Very accurate!
I've never loaded (or fired) bp loads in this caliber before and just stick with smokeless loads. Although I have loaded rounds in the "Lever Action" class in the past, but I prefer to stay with Trapdoor pressures. Starting loads at that! If those will go through a buffalo, I'm sure they will work just fine with Tennessee whitetails. I know for certain that paper targets don't seem to slow them down.
I still get the fun of shooting a big bore with out stressing the rifle (OR ME!) IMR 3031 is a favorite powder and I load a lot with 25 grains of Alliant 2400 under any kind of bullet, from 300 grain jacketed hollow point to a 500 grain cast lead.
Always wanted a trapdoor rifle/carbine. Enjoy your new (to you) guns (when ya get home).

Holy cow!!! lots of different p220's out there!!!
Thanks Doughnut.. I didn't know..I know a mosquito..because my wife wanted one to plink with. since the grips are a bit wide for me I don't really get into them..
as far as I know, it's just a regular old p220...but I didn't take a good look at it..nor did I shoot it....so it could be a dak or something like that. I know it's a double action...that's about the speed of what I know about that pistol.

10 bucks a day for internet here at the pool hotel. Won't be on often.
The SIG is a european style, (mag release on the butt), marked Browning / SIG SAUER system on one side of the slide. Not in their current catalog, don't know much about it. Swapped my M4gery for the sig and a Manhurin Mauser PP. Anybody want a nice little 32 ACP pocket pistol, 'cause I don't really need another one.
BTW, Tower, yep, you can haz PA-63. Keepin the holster, though :)
Never loaded the 45-70 before. Did buy a box of ammo at the show, ?? grains of IMR behind a 500 grain roundnose lead bullet. Shoots fine, doesn't really kick. 30 bucks for a box of 20 though....
I guess the other Mauser I picked up at the show also qualify as C&R, though not black powder - a C96.
Yay - Numrich has stripper clips for the broomhandle! Now I need to find good 7.63.... anybody currently producing it?
