AK 47

I am looking for magazines for my AK. Every site I go yo has steel and polymer, and mags from different countries. Which type has the better rep? Which country? I am also looking for a drum. Again, which type? How much are the mags and drums on average? Has anyone used Copes Distributing?

I have had good luck with Copes before. The main rule to live by is to buy only foreign AK mags. Stay away from any US made mags(sad but true). The Bulgarian "Waffle" polymer mags are probably the best. But Hungarian, Polish and Chicom stuff is just as reliable and functional. If you are relatively new to the AK then go here:

If you go polymer, stick with the Bulgarian waffles. I have two of those steel Romanian mags from AimSurplus. I've had no problems with them. AimSurplus is also a good company to deal with.

I prefer Yugo steel mags simply because they will hold your bolt open on the last round.
Most any non-US AK mag will work just fine.

Regarding AIMSurplus...I do alot of business with them and will continue to do so, but I have heard alot of negative comments concerning their AK mag deals (condition of the mags being WAY overrated).

Mine were kind of dirty and had a couple small rust spots, but they cleaned up just fine.

Good to hear...maybe they've corrected their AK mag grading issue.
I have done alot of business with AIM (I've not bought AK mags from them) and have always been happy.

I have only purchased ammunition from AIM surplus. That said even if the mags have some surface rust then a little oil and steel wool would fix any cosmetic problems. It is hard to stop a AK(European) mag from working. For my money Bulgarian polymer mags are lighter, rust-proof and just as indestructable.

While I can see the advantages of the Bolt Hold Open mags, 99% of the mags you will come across would not have this feature. It would seem to be more prudent to train with regular AK mags.

The odds of running across an AR set up like mine may be rare too, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to set it up the way I want it or train with my chosen equipment.

For most of us, "battlefield pick-ups" are fantasy, at best...

...but, indulging for a minute. BHO mags can give a "heads-up" on weapon condition (instead of a "click"). No more, no less.
The skill sets I employ afterwards do not change, regardless of the mag I'm using.

I agree with you and Urse... how many times have you counted your rounds only to be off by one or 2 because of distractions?

I would take an ar over an AK anyhow though..simply because a. the mags change quicker (cqb anyone?) b.its more accurate, c.lighter and d. more versatile.

Most folks have a method of training that works for them...not for everyone..for them! folks who have combat tested their method do NOT depart from it..why? because it works. that means it saves their scalp when others want to hang it from their lodgepole.



Just my opinion..take it for what ya paid for it :D
