Has anyone done a mag-lite conversion for brightness? (that they would recommend)?

I have a 3 d-cell model and I have changed the bulb to a LED to get better battery life. However, it is only marginally brighter than the standard bulb and has a slight bluish tint.

I am looking for a vast improvement in the output. It might be better just to buy a Surefire but I thought a conversion might be less expensive.

They sell conversion kits that replace the lightbulb with a 3 LED cluster and replace the battery cap with a on/off pushbutton. I have one for my AA Maglite and it's considerably brighter.

Check this THREAD (http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2640). Watchmaker sells some REALLY nice conversions.

thanks for the thread reference. I did not realize flashlights could be so complicated. This may take a while to digest.

I felt the same way when I started reading that thread. A ton of good info there.

now that I have read all the background information I am still uncertain.

All I need a flashlight to investigate a "bump in the night." I also want it to be of sufficient brightness to be irritating to the receiver and light weight.

Can any one recommend one or tell me what they use?

I still like the 3 D-Cell Mag Lite. Light weight? Nope, but I can beat the heck out of you if I need to.

I have replaced the bulb with an LED, I still don't think it is bright enough.

Mine originally came with one. It is pretty bright. Lights up my entire living room on a dark night.

I have the Surefire 6P LED. This is different from the standard 6P. It burns at 80 lumens for 11 hrs. The standard is 65 for 1 or 2 hrs I think it is. It only costs about $15 more than the standard 6P. I got mine at On Target in Murfreesboro for about $15 less than Lowe's sells it. Great deal. I love this light.

I have tried the conversion kits for the maglites and never was satisfied.

I second Warbird. This light will hurt your eyes! I also have the 3 D cell Maglite in LED. Its very bright, and is a good head thumper. For the nightstand, I would get the Surefire.
