I mentioned this to a few of the guys at the Mid TN Meet and Shoot last weekend and I finally got around to posting this. Here is a couple photos and a short video of some cnc milling on an AR lower. I work with another member here, mace8924, and he did the programming on this.

I did not have much room to store and host it so I compressed it down a good bit. Hopefully you can see it well enough.
Enjoy!

No need to have a cmm. There are files available free all over the place. Solid models, autocad files, and pdf versions of the blue prints are all over the internet.
We are trying it two ways. We are machining a couple complete from billet and we are buying a few raw forgings and finishing the machining on those. There are also drawing for setup fixtures or blocks on the internet which are simple to make. We have some upper forgings in the office as well but for now we are not going to machine those.
A handful of us in the shop are all building one for ourselves. The above was just the first profile passes on one side. We have several more machining steps to do. The most difficult of which is the mag well pocket since it is a deep pocket with sharp or square corners. It could really use the services of and EDM but you can square the corners in other ways. There is one hole that is a difficult reach. Not really a hard operation but you need a long shank drill to make the reach. Other than that there are very few special tools needed.
It would be so much simpler and maybe in the long run cheaper to just but a $100 lower but this is a project to undertake just because we can and I feel it is my duty as a man to make a firearm out of a hunk of metal.
