I watched Jeremiah Johnson (again) yesterday. All he wanted was a genuine .50 caliber Hawken rifle, and by golly he got one from the cold frozen hands of Hatchet Jack.
What a great movie. Makes me want to leave civilization and be a mountain man.:D

I like the movie to. It's based off (loosely) the book"Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver Eating Johnson" Link (http://www.amazon.com/Crow-Killer-Liver-Eating-Johnson-Midland/dp/0253203120/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201879677&sr=1-1)
A very good book, way different than the movie. The movie is very... uh... "Disney" compared to the book. He was a tough guy. It's a really good read.
I never new he was an actual person.

You want to watch a really good movie pick up a copy of "The Moutain Men" with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith. Now that's a shinnin' movie if ever there was one.

an excellent book on the subject of the fur trade and mountain men is A Majority of Scoundrels by Don Berry. It was a must read when I was a kid, as much of the setting was in and around where I grew up (Colorado), and key players were Jedediah Smith, James Beckworth, Kit Carson...

I read alot of Louis L'Amour and like his mountain men stories best. I found 3 novels --- Vol I Westward! -- Vol II Expedition! -- Vol III Outpost. all part of
(Wagons West Frontier Trilogy( by Dana Fuller Ross) Clay Holt with the Lewis and Clark expedition. Some great reading just my :2cents: worth.
I also ordered Crow KIller and Mountain man tonight on Amazon. Thanks for the info, always looking for good reading like that,,,:)
