What percentage of this class is spent in the classroom vs. out shooting?
Todd@CIS

Approximately 25% classroom and 75% live fire.

Sorry, one more question. I am seriously thinking about signing up, but I was curious how many people generally attend each class?
Todd@CIS

Don't be sorry.
Dustin and I are present for every class and we limit the class size to 12.
Not the best move for the bottom dollar, but we like a close instructor/student ratio.

Sounds good. I think I will probably sign up when I get my tax refund back in a week or so. Going to see if I can find one or two people to come along with me.

just for my future reference, your site lists as prerequisites: hcp, nra first steps, police/military training, or equiv. does that mean any one of those will do?

That's correct, any one will do.

Hey, sorry if this is a dumb question. the list you gave as required for the class, how do I go about getting this training to qualify for future classes? I guess the only training class I have been to is the TWRA Hunter Safety program. I would like to get more "official" training with handgun. Any thoughts? I am open for any suggestions. Thanks

??? Your profile indicates that you have a Handgun Carry Permit.
That would satisfy the prerequisites for our upcoming Defensive Pistol class.

I've been to The Range's advanced handgun class, as well and the NRA Personal Protection inside (and outside) the home classes held by HGR. Would this class be a "repeat" of the adv handgun class I've already taken?

dunndw...since I've never attended any of The Range's classes, I cannot answer your question.
I will say that I've been to numerous military, LE, and private sector schools/classes and, although there are always some similarities, I've learned something from every one.

Great! That makes me happy. Hopefully I will be able to get some great training under my belt. Thanks for the info.:)

Personally, I'm of the opinion that you can't get too much training. Any time you spend in class, learning something is a good thing. Different instructors usually pass along some differences in information. Even if it's the same info, it might be packaged in a different way that gets you to think about it in a new light. Plus, there's often so much info in classes that it's hard to retain everything, every time. A second or third time covering the material often causes new stuff to click in your mind that it overlooked from information overload the previous times.
Plus, you get the chance to fire off close to 1,000 rounds of ammo. That's always a fun thing to do.
I'm taking CIS' upcoming Defensive Carbine class, and wouldn't mind taking their Defensive Pistol and Shotgun classes when time permits. It's nice to have a local instructor teaching classes beyond the basic pistol classes.

What IS the round count for this class? If it's 1000 I've gotta find someones kidney to sell to gather funds for ammo :-)

The website says "750 rounds of factory loaded ammunition"

CRAP...uh...anyone know where I can find a unused kidney or two for EBay
250 rounds of .45 @ Bass Pro is running 90.00.
My 200.00 class just became 500.00

Knowing pretty much nothing about the class, since the website pretty much says nothing concrete, it sounds like a reasonably priced novice class - until you add in the ammo.
But I would prefer something that says you will learn, A, B, C and D.
I would ask a lot more questions.

I was actually talking about very similiar stuff with Todd this past weekend. We were talking shop about the gunshows and advertising.

Todd,
About the dates, do you ever offer similar classes that do not finish on Sunday. Sunday is a can not miss church day.

Mars, a couple of points...
1. You can debate how well our course desciptions are written, but to say that they "say nothing concrete" is a little harsh, IMO.
2. "Reasonably priced novice class." CIS Defensive Pistol is not a novice class...I would have thought that the prerequisite requirements would have made that clear.
3. We cannot control ammo costs. You're going to run into this anywhere you train; not just CIS. If ammo is too expensive for someone to train, that's a personal decision that we have nothing to do with. And, if we were to dip below 750 rounds, I'd be afraid of not covering the material well enough and not building the skill sets.
4. We encourage questions. (615)347-0787. If I don't answer, I'm at work doing cop/SWAT stuff. I usually return calls in the evening hours on the same day that someone leaves a message.
To put training costs into perspective, Dustin and I will be attending an out-of-state, 2-day pistol course in April. Ammo requirement is 1000 rounds, each.
Course...$400
Ammo...
Time off from work...
Hotel...
Food...
Gas...
Dustin and I do this at least once a year with different instructors (usually more...the best instructors will tell you that they are eternal students).
Everyone has priorities and obligations, I get that.
However, I feel confident in saying that, for the money, you will not find better training than what we offer in our Defensive packages.

Bob, unfortunately, at this time that is not possible for us for two reasons.
1. Our "day jobs."
2. The military's range schedules.
BTW, I do admire your religious discipline.

Todd, I thought I was being nice. The price sounds like a bargain and I'm sure your students will learn a lot.
But I don't think I'm too far off on the novice comment. Maybe I have misunderstood the prerequisites - "Handgun carry permit, NRA "First Steps," police / military training, or equivalent." To my way of thinking, those prerequisites don't necessarily mean you have much pistol training. You may have tremendous experience, or you may barely know where the bullet comes out. I'm thinking of one little old lady in my carry permit course who would meet the prerequisite. ;)
But I wasn't cutting down your class. I save that for blowhards who hype their overpriced "training" as if it was a circus act. One guy in particular comes to mind....
I do think you could have a more detailed syllabus or some pictures showing what the students will be learning. I think I probably have a pretty good idea, but can't know for sure.

bang-flash and flyfishtn...you do not need the actual HCP to take Defensive Pistol, just that you've completed the class. We're only interested in your basis of knowledge as a prerequisite.
Thanks for the interest.

Having the HCP and going to the range a few times a month, I still want to get a lot better.
Is a SA XD SubCompact 9mm sufficient enough for the course ?
I am good at close range up to 20 - 25 ft...need more work on my long range. Not sure how everyone else does with that.
Is this the course that would help me ?

Sufficient? Yes, but understand that manipulating and shooting a subcompact will be more difficult in a "high volume" class as compared to a mid to full-sized gun.

If your looking for "target/competition instruction" for longer range pistol shooting, probably not. But, I suspect that since you're talking about using a SA XD SubCompact, that's probably not what you meant.
Our Defensive Pistol is a fighting class conducted at typical fighting ranges. The vast majority of rounds are fired at 0-15 yards.
However, will your overall skill with a pistol improve? Yes.
Does that translate at different distances? Yes.

Guys, judging by the Defensive Carbine class this past weekend, you owe it to yourselves and your loved ones to take this class. It will make you a better shooter, which translates to being better able to protect yourselves and your families from the ill-meaning vermin of the world.

Quick question....
I also have a XD SubCompact, but mine is in 40, but I have a 1911 45 double stack as well as a 9mm Steyr Compact. Can you and is it advantageous to bring multiple guns to the class. I actually carry and use all 3 depending on my dress for the day or evening.
My XD is my main carry gun because of the size but from 10+ yards I can hit a man, but can not surgically remove body parts like I can with the 1911 or Steyr.

Absolutely...as long as you have a total of 1000 rounds (yes, we bumped up the round count to 1000).
In fact, I recommend someone always bringing a 2nd gun to training courses, if possible. After shelling out for the course and associated costs, it would suck to have a broken gun sideline you.

So long as my financial situation develops like I expect it to over the next month or so, I'd be very interested in this course. I'd like to move beyond basic marksmanship and into some real-world tactics.
