View Full Version : EAST Tenn. TGO members interested in a ______ get together?

Okay, first of all, I shouldn't be the one orchestrating this as I can never plan anything more than a day in advance. With that said, hopefully we can determine amongst ourselves a convenient time and place for a meet, greet, and make BOOM!!
I'm not a member at any gun clubs in the area, yet, but would like to check some out. Maybe a member of a club could work with their club to sponsor a get together. I'd be willing to pay $5 or $10 to shoot somewhere and if we all agreed on a price/person, the selected club might entertain the outing.
Give a reply if anyone is interested or if anyone has any ideas. It's starting to be much nicer shooting weather and my AK is almost built!!!:D I have a modest collection of firearms and it'd be neat to check out some of yours in action.
Let's make BOOM!!!

14 April would probably be the soonest Saturday that something like that could be done. Maybe meet up somewhere for lunch and then head to a range where everyone can enjoy making things go bang and drool over someone else's guns. (=

Anyone else??

That date is out for me as I have a class to teach that day. I'll be tied up for 10 hrs and won't feel like shooting after that. The 15th on the other hand is do-able. :)

That sounds good. Unfortunately that date is out for me as well. My anniversary is that week, and I'll be out on business most of the week. So I've already been told not to book anything for that weekend.
I'm sure you guys could use a good laugh though.....And that's just what you'll get when you see me shot with my little gun that jams every third shot. Maybe you all could help me figure out why it jams so much.

Hmm, lots of people saying that date doesn't work, anyone able to suggest an alternate date?
Marswolf
03-28-2007, 02:28 PM
I've organized a lot of groups and and tell you that any given date will be picked to death.
I suggest setting up a general date, like the third Saturday in the month at 11 AM at Ryan's steakhouse in Johnson City or something like that. Then anyone who wants to can go up to Scioto or something. Maybe in time we'll get some folks who have a farm where we can shoot rather than a formal range. The location and date can be changed if necessary, but remember that when you do that to accommodate someone, you will piss off existing people who can't come on the new day. So try to pick a good day to begin with.
Everyone can't come every time, but eventually people work out a schedule to let them come.

That sounds like a logical solution Mars. It would be nice to have a set day every month. I for one wouldn't be able to make it everytime, whenever it may be, but would definitely be able to plan accordingly if that were the case. I wouldn't nit pick it either if I can't make it. I just hope it's not a bust for everyone else or if one person shows and noone else does. If there are only two people meeting up at first, that's at least a start right!!
Let's try to figure out something along those lines though. Third Saturday in the month sounds good. Does anyone have suggestions as to where? I've never been to Scioto so I'm unfamiliar with how it may accomodate our needs.
I know I could plan accordingly with the fiance much better that way too. For me at least, that's where most obligation comes from on the weekends if it's not work! If it was planned that the third Saturday in the month was my day to shoot then it could become somewhat of a routine.
So let's keep this open for discussion. I'm liking the sound of it already! is that an itch in my finger, hmm, wonder what that could be!!
Marswolf
03-28-2007, 03:15 PM
Scioto is by no means ideal. Just one of the few places I could think of to go. As I mentioned, someone's farm would be better.
I like the idea of eating first, then going to shoot. We could eat before noon and be at the shooting location at 12:30. Everyone could choose whether to do both or just eat or shoot.
No reason this has to be a guy thing either. Wives and girlfriends could come too. I know my wife enjoys shooting and doesn't mind an occasional cuss word.

Good point on the females Mars. Sorry if it sounded like I meant this as a guys only type of outing, it was unintentional if so. Sorry to any females on the board too! It would be nice if there were other females there so my fiance might feel a bit more comfortable going.
My fiance doesn't particularly hate guns, I think she is more afraid of the unknown than anything. I've taken her shooting and she did quite well, but I think the 9mm and the .38 special scared her a bit. Maybe someone has a .22lr pistol she can shoot! I've been trying to convince her that she'd like it as she liked the .22 rifle, but the wedding is more important to her than buying herself (I want one too) a gun!! lol.
Does anybody else have some ideas, input, or interest?

As far as another female being there, my fiance will come if her schedule permits. She loves to shoot. And she'd enjoy it even more if someone has a Glock 19 to bring that she could shoot some. She loves Glock 19's, but I don't have the spare cash to buy her one of her own just yet.
How about we go with Marswolf's idea and set the date as the third Saturday in April. (21 April 2007). With a date set, we can figure out what range and what restaurant to go to.

I agree. Dates are always a pain in the butt to try and set. Best to just pick one and run with it. As it was stated earlier, some will be able to come and some won't. And if this turns into a monthly thing, then there's always next month.
Speaking of dates, April 21 is open for me. I'll go ahead and mark it down right now. Works out good anyways. Hopefully I'll have one of em new bang bang thang's by then...:D

21st is fine with me. I got a place to shoot that you don't have to jump through hoops to shoot at. No waiting. I'm in the process of developing a range for a guy here just outside of Oak Ridge. He wants $10 a head to shoot but that's for all day and has Porta-John facilities back on the range. Shoot paper or steel. 6 pistol/rifle/shotgun firing points which I may be able to have covered by then. I'm laying in the road this upcoming week.

Oak Ridge is a two hour drive for those of us in Tri-Cities, even the way I drive and with my unfortunate knowledge of where the cops like to run radar between here and there... Ah the joys of road trips your first year of college to Knoxville and Chattanooga because you didn't want to drink at home... Memories... Oh fun.

It could be done I suppose... I've gone further to shoot before. A cousin broke his arm one time and convinced me to come fill in for him once at a high-power competition in Texas that required flying with a firearm three months after 9/11... that's was fun too. So was lugging an 11.5 pound customized .308 around the desert in January...

I had Big Ed's about 20 years ago with my grandfather. He used to travel to Oak Ridge frequently for work (nuclear plant security) and I got to go with him once. Of all the things I remember best about the place, Big Ed's is one of them. We ate in the restaurant then we ordered another one to go for later at the hotel. :yum:

I'm fine with Oak Ridge. Still around 45 min. for me but that's not as far away as some of you other guys so I agree with the others that are driving a longer distance. However, IIRC there has been no other places mentioned. I'd say plan this one for the 21st of April in Oak Ridge, maybe do it there for a month or two, but let's everyone keep an open mind about moving around a little. Seeing different places. If others find a farm or shooting range in other locations across E. TN, post them up here and we'll all enjoy the country side as we travel along. There's a lot different ppl posting in here, so I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find ppl close to all of us that we could car pool with. No since in getting to a place and have 50 different cars there.

Have to be honest guys. I can't see many folks driving from the Tri-Cities to Oak Ridge to shoot. It would be great for a Knoxville shoot though.
I still wonder if we can't find someone with some property in the sticks. I have a neighbor who used to let people shoot on his farm but they kept doing stuff like shooting up his silo. Plus it matters where his livestock is.
I lived in Raleigh for a few years after college. I'd carry a roll of half dollars with me because 50 cents was how much a beer cost at a tavern back then. If you got caught drinking and driving, the cops would probably just tell you to drive straight home and not stop at another bar. You could smoke with your beer (although I'd stopped smoking by then).
Dear me...I'm getting nostalgic for the olden days. :p

Porta-John to be delivered late this upcoming week. Still have a little bridge repair to do (I damned near dropped a little 10 ton truck load of gravel into the creek. That ride was more thrilling for me than any ride at Dollywoood! :D )
I'll be running practical shooting exercises out there this upcoming weekend. I'm holding off some cowboy shooters for Saturday, 21 April until y'all let me know for sure. So what's the concensus? Do I need to reserve the range that day?
If we have a crew coming to Oak Ridge, I'll post the directions and a map. If not, I'll need directions and a map to where ever we are meeting, shooting and eating please. Makes no difference to me. I'd just like to get together.

Phantom,
I'd say book it. The only other place that's been mentioned is tower's brother's place, and that's still a maybe. Sounds like their wanting to break off a little bit smaller anyways, so I'd say book it and the guys that's around here handy or other's that want to join in from abroad, can.
BTW guys, I saw a sign tonight advertising a gun show at the Knoxville expo center for the 21st and 22nd. Isn't that off of Clinton Hwy? If so, would anyone like to finish off the day by dropping in there? I'd be interested in going with someone that could so me things to look out for or items that are a good deal. I've got the dough now to purchase, just haven't made my mind up yet. I don't know wheather to buy and have for the meet or wait and see if any of you guys have something that catches my eye.

hahahah boom...make no mistake..all of these guys have something that will catch your eye!
My sister is out of town until after Easter weekend, so I wont be able to get in touch with her until she gets back, my brother is out at sea, but thats ok too...
If Sue and Mark are ok with it, then I'll post directions and a phone number.
I won't be able to make it though..going to be working my butt off...I MAY be home next week though!! just for a few days.
yippeeee..
so if when I'm home, I'll post up and you guys are welcome to meet/greet and shoot when I'm there...will work on the 21st. as well

I've been working a lot of 6 day weeks lately so I can't really say anything for sure. Norris range or something around Knoxville would work good for me, although tri-cities isn't all that much further if I go through VA.

04-08-2007, 01:12 PM
We are getting close enough to the target date, and I can't see anything going on in the Tri-Cities that will get us together this month for a shoot up here unless we do Scioto. I'd say go for Oak Ridge and try to get something going for the Tri-Cities on May 19.
I think towerclimber37 needs to be at the first shoot at his brother's place, if he and his wife are agreeable. Meantime, we can try to find some other locations too.

So are you looking to get something together for next weekend or for the following? (April 21st)

04-09-2007, 02:22 PM
Alrighty, from what I can tell, Knoxville (Oak Ridge) seems to be the most feasible for this month (Sat the 21st).
We should plan for next month (May 19th?) to be in the Tri-Cities. Hopefully by then we can either have a place figured out, someone with a farm between Tri-Cities and Knoxville will join TGO (haha), or Tower can grace us with his presence and brother's property!!
Phantom6-It sounds like you've got Sterling lined up pretty nicely. Can you give us some more info on that please? Sterling is okay with me. Anyone else have input concerning this?
That famous pizza joint was mentioned earlier, is this still preferable? We could arrange to meet for pizza around 11:30-12:30 and plan to be at the range by 1. To late, to early?
Boomhower-I'm interested in the gun show! I don't need to be around the temptation, but I won't turn down the opportunity!! :D
Me-"Sweety, I just need some ammo and it's cheaper at the shows!!"
Said Sweety- "*Siiiiiiighhhh*"
My "Sweety" can't join us this month, she's had plans with her girlfriends for a few months apparently! She does however want to make it out to shoot though. Hopefully one of you has a .22lr pistol she could try out. She's been contemplating one, but wants to shoot one first (I want one as well so BONUS!!!:D ).
Okay, long enough post!!!........

Just read thru this thread and hope to get with you guys in the next month or so. Working on April 21st though.
A word of warning however. Towerclimber is trying to get everyone to his brother's place at Sensabaugh Tunnel. That is the only certified, genuine haunted tunnel in the Tennessee region. The story goes that many years ago a woman and her kids were killed at the tunnel and now if you park your car in the tunnel at night with your motor off and lights out, you can see her walking by the end of the tunnel while she's calling out for her kids. I've done this myself and while I didn't see her I know I heard her holler. I didn't wait for an appearence. I got outta Dodge. So if you go there to shoot, be sure you're out of there before sundown. Remember, bullets don't hurt ghosts!!!

Half of ETSU's buildings are haunted. What's one more ghost? But since the April shoot is in Oak Ridge, I'll have to pass. I can't make it out that day, I'm going to go see about bidding on a shotgun in one of the TWRA auctions that day. Too good of an chance to save a good bit of money on one to pass up.

I unfortunately won't be able to make it...but I just spent 1000 bucks on a plane ticket (1 days' notice) and am home now!!! so if anyone wants to shoot this saturday, give me a holler and we can meet up and go shooting at the property!!!:popcorn:

its inexpensive and hey...if you save your pennies on the targets, thats more pennies that can be used on ammunition!:D

TWRA Seized Contraband to Be
Sold in Region 4
A sale of personal property seized by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers will be held beginning the month of April. TWRA wildlife officers seize various items involved in wildlife violations each year. After the violators have been before the court, any of the items seized that have been declared to be contraband by the court are then ordered to be sold by the TWRA.
This sale will be held at the front door of the County Courthouse and each item will be sold to the highest bidder. Said sale of any firearms open only to persons 18 years of age or older and legally capable of possessing a firearm under federal and state laws.
The following is a list of the contraband items to be sold, along with a description of the items:

We've also talked about going to the gun show off of I-75 afterwards. Put your name in that list if you'd like to go.

Bucket is unsure now:( .
He excepted a job in Roanoke Va starting in two weeks and might have to scope out some temporary living arrangements this weekend (much better paying to support my firearm addiction!). Plans will be last minute depending on my obligations, but I'll try to keep up with things here either way.
Tower, I'll keep you posted too as you had mentioned Jeeppoolin!

Phantom6,
I'm just wondering what all do we need to plan on bringing? Of course the obivious, but concering targets. I plan on printing some off and was wondering what type of facility this is. Do I need to being a cardboard backer for these targets, or will there be some type of backers provided?
Is this indoor, or outdoor. (for appropriate dressing)
How much does it cost to shoot?
Any other details that we might need to know?

will do, Tung! right AFTER the shoot :D
I went shooting again today..
Julie shot the 22... it has now "officially" had 200 rounds through it..its 100 rounds short of its break in.
I'll leave that 100 rounds for you and your young ones to finish up.
it also has a 16 dollar nylon uncle mikes' holster for it :D that will go with the pistol. Teaching someone to holster a pistol as well as to draw it, is also important!

I was hoping not to have to do this but we are going to have to move the shoot portion of Saturday’s activities to the range at Norris, TN which is located just east of Clinton. A fellow that works for the land owner that I lease the land from was doing some tractor work for us on the road up to the range and as it turns out he was drunk last Friday and tore up the road, the drains and a portion of the range itself.
It was my intention to get the mess cleaned up and have y’all out there this weekend but due the rain last weekend and the torn up drainage system along the road I ended up getting a 3 ton dump truck loaded with 7.5 tons of gravel stuck on the road. It actually partially slid off the road and up against some trees. Six trees, a ruptured fuel tank (mis-judged the height of a stump that I left :( ) and three days later I finally got the truck unstuck and moved off the road yesterday. Now the road looks like a tank course at the US Army Armor School at Fort Knox and I will not have the mess cleaned up so as to access the range by Saturday.
Here’s a photo of the range at Norris. Through the trees on the left is the pistol area. Good high berms. One of the best kept secrets in the county actually.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/MicroFx/RangePhoto.jpg
Norris Range Directions
From Big Ed’s
15 min. from Oak Ridge
East on Oak Ridge Turnpike (Hwy. 95)
Just East of Oak Ridge 95 turns into Hwy. 61
Continue East on Hwy. 61 through Clinton
Cross over I-75 and go to the intersection of Hwy. 61, Norris Rd. and US 441 (2nd light after Interstate).
Turn Left on Norris Rd.
Go North on Norris Road
At the circle just south of the Middle School bear Right and travel on Circle Rd. past front of Norris Middle School.
Directly ahead of you, you will see the Norris Fire Department/Police Department. You must stop there, fill out a range waiver and pay a fee of $10.00 each. You will not need to pay the $1.00 deposit for a range key as I have one.
Left out of PD parking lot on Reservoir Rd
Pass Elementary School on your right.
At Red Hill Road turn left
Go 25 yds. & turn left on Upper Clear Creek Rd. This will turn to gravel after about 500 yds. Continue on Upper Clear Creek for about ¾ mile + or – and look for Range sign on your right.---------------------------------------------

Sorry. Between trying to dig the damn truck out and two groups of shooters to qualify this week I've neglected this thread. The range itself has target stands complete with target backers. I will also bring 8 target stands complete with target backers and a bunch of B27 targets.
I will provide my cell number to everyone at Big Ed's so that if anyone gets turned around getting to the range you can call and I can talk you in.
Sorry for the change in plans on the range. See everyone at Big Ed's at 1200 then, eh?

I shot perhaps 75 rounds of 8mm...thats all my shoulder could stand...
and I KNOW that between ALL the guys (and ashely) we shot about 100 rounds through the m1a2.
Today and late last night were all cleaning time....I STILL have 3 pistols to clean!

Oddly enough, I've never tried Pratt's. I'm a nut about BBQ. My family bought a dog from them back when they were Pratt's Farmland on Sullivan Street back in the 50s. A Jonesborough based BBQ place, Boby's Boogie Pig Bar-B-Q, just moved into Blountville. OK, but not special. My current local favorite is the Red Pig, in JC. But I bring my own sauce to any of them.

Pratt's is the only decent one I've found locally, though I haven't tried Ridgewood or the Red Pig.
After 4 years in Memphis, I like my BBQ a certain way too, and Pratt's offers a good selection of sauces, none are perfect, but they have some that are very good.

I have never cared for Ridgewood. I prefer pulled barbecue. You have to remember that though I'm a Tennessean, all of my family is from Georgia and some of them were in the barbecue business. So I may be prejudiced.
Or then again I may just be right as usual.

Address: 1225 E. Stone Drive, Kingsport, TN 37660

Looks like they have some pretty reasonable prices!!
And once again, they do serve alcoholic beverages, so use your own judgement.

That's them. A word to the wise, they don't put the cole slaw on the sandwiches, you have to do that yourself, but they negate that negative by serving their drinks in mason jars :)

Hey dotsun, we were planing to travel together Saturday morning but last night I had a training gig come up at ETSU :usa:ROTC Friday afternoon and evening so I'll be having to go up either early Friday morning or, if I can get the "powers that be" to spring for the extra night's hotel and food, Thursday night. :) Check with Boomhower or Branket re: the ability to drive in the HOV lanes. Sorry to let you know so late but I just got the call last night.

I'll have that ammo waiting on you.
I also picked up a gun rack (home made wood type, 1 each) from storage in s.c....so we'll be able to put our rifles up on that..pistols can be set on the ONE table that boom scrounged...I guess we can put ammo in cans out for folks to police their brass (its required.)
Keep in mind guys..this place is pretty primitive..there's going to be 1 table, 1 gunrack and a few ammo cans.
if you care to bring drop cloths to settle down on, thats fine.
if I can find another table I'll bring it out too...
but hey! its free.

My wife is coming to the Pratt's luncheon, in case that matters to other possible women attendees. Women are funny about that sort of thing. They don't want to be the only woman in a sea of testosterone.

Rabbit, glad you didn't break your wrist up in recoil anticipation. Could have been a "HOLE" different outcome. No hard feelings bud. If you're gonna plant tomatos or peppers in that garden you went home to work today, I want some.
Tower, thanks for having us out and for the ammo. Make sure you bring that M1 'cause I got a big tree laying across the range about 9 feet off the ground at the 80 meter mark that I need cleared. :D

I enjoyed seeing familiar faces and meeting new people as well. Ashley says she had a good time as well even if she had a frightening fixation on my bayonet for most of the time, she did actually shoot some. All in all it was a good time and I wish we could have stayed a little longer. I'm also glad that this is starting to look like an actual monthly meeting, it gives me something to look forward to that has nothing to do with school.

Neal had fun too - he was talking about the next meet and all the guns we regretted not bringing. (He's a man of few words, so if he comments on something you can bet that it is very significant)
Primitive conditions? I thought they were fine. I just wish I had concentrated the contents of the 'clock' on the tree instead of the targets!
