Well I have been operating BigBoyToyAuction.com for some time now. To be entirely honest it has not been very popular. And we have not been getting much business. Because of that and recent events leading to an increase in everything firearms. I have made firearm related auctions on the site free. No end of auction fees, no listing fees. The only fees are for special features like bold, homepage etc. The only thing that I ask is that for those that are selling please make sure that you decrease the cost of the product to the amount you would normally mark it up for other online auctions. Prices have rocketed I want to drive them down at at least a little bit. Every little bit helps. And dealers are welcome to take advantage as well. Anything firearms related.

This will be a bit of a rant... but hang in there it may get funny. Or pathetic... to early to tell.

I do a little hobby webcomic. It's been on hiatus while I was taking care of some other business. So I'm getting back to it.

Well.... I had a little bit of flaky code that had been bugging me so decided to fix it. Nothing major. I'm pretty anal about keeping backups and stuff like that... (can you see where this is going?)

Yup... you guessed it. Screwed it up. How bad? Toasted the config file that handle authentication with the databases. That... is not good.

I tried a couple of things but to no good. Soooo I decided to just rebuild the site and fix all those little things that had been bugging me for so long. (Yeah I could have restored the site and dug out an older config file to replace the toasted one, but after thinking this would be better.) Just liked the idea of a fresh coat of digital paint after a long hiatus.

It's been a while since I have sat down and did some coding...

Let's backup a bit first and go over my coding skills. I basically subscribe to the "Monkey-Code-Implication-Process"... or the "M.C.I.P". I modify code by grabbing bits of code out of my butt and throw it against the wall to see if it will stick. Yeah... just like monkey's throwing feces in the zoo. The major difference being when a monkey does it, it looks humorous. When I do that digitally, with code, it looses that "cute" appeal to be replaced by "pathetic".

Oh how I loath code.

Anyhoo... after 6 hours the site was back up. Still uploading the comic archive and building the supporting pages when I can, but overall it is up and functioning.

But still... I can't really complain about sitting behind a mac for 6 hours on a Saturday. It sure does beat digging a hole outside in the hot sun for 6 hours.

Kind of helps to keep things in perspective.

While I have learnt a great deal about AR-15s in SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) configurations, and made my fevered desire to own one known to all on the TGO Boards... one question still eludes me... Why? Why is it that I desire a 10.5" AR-15 so much?

Herogear may have eluded to the reason in his post where he is offering an excellent deal on SBR kits. he mentions in his post...

"...to be shooting short like the cool kids..."

I think that could be a big factor in the draw. The "Shorties" are a rather rare breed. Not easily obtained, and costing higher than a standard 16" AR. Thus making them seem unattainable to many.

But after thinking on it a while (In other words why I shift through expenses and things I could sell to come up with the money for the kit!) I begin to wonder what is my obsession with it?

Could it be because I am about to turn 40? Maybe a little middle age "gun" crazy? Watched "Heat" to many times? Clicked through the "SBR Picture Thread" on M4.carbine.net a little too much?
Not sure...

Then this hit me while talking to a friend. He asked the simple questions "Why do you want it? and What are you going to do with it?

So let's look at what it is designed for. Close Quarter Combat. Entry, Room Clearing, firing in enclosed spaces, maneuvering in tight quarters, easier deployment from vehicles, etc.

Uh.... first off none of that is in my job description where I work. Nor is it called for in my current "Operations" I am deployed in when not at work. You see away from work, my second job is "Dad". So most of my "operations" are usually...

• Bringing unruly weeds into submission.
• Provide Overwatch for "Bath Time".
• Termination of subversive rodents that breach the perimeter.
• Transportation of Designated Recyclables and Hazardous waste to Williamson County's Western Manned Outpost. (Located close to the Hickman County DMZ.)

So is an SBR really isn't "Mission Dependent" equipment for me. Well... according to my wife anyway. Although... I do argue to provide the proper amount of security during our kids bath time an SBR would have it's benefits.

I could take a Carbine course from CIS right now with the 16" AR and A1 Upper I have now. An SBR isn't really needed for the course. Nor will an SBR really increase how well I shoot with an AR. Only practice and training will do that. If I'm not going to use the thing, and I mean USE it. Throw vast amounts of lead down range every chance I get... then I might as well buy an Airsoft replica and stand in the mirror.

So what it comes down to I guess is this... they look cool, and (for me) they are just another toy. To call them anything more than that is just lying to myself. It's not an "investment", or a "necessity". It's a "want" pure, plain and simple. Which should be kept in mind while I try to get the funds in place.

One bonus to an 10.5" SBR is they don't make my butt look big. Which is often not taken into consideration when purchasing firearms. We've all seen them at the range... guy walks in with a new gun and goes to shoot it and his butt just look huge. Frankly... it's embarrassing and awkward for everyone on the line.

You stay classy SBR.... I'll come and get you soon enough.

I'll admit I am a little biased when it comes to Heckler & Koch products so take this with a grain of salt.

This past Saturday morning while at Guns & Leather I was given the opportunity... no wait... distinct pleasure to fire a full auto MP5. It was in my favorite configuration... full stock, and surefire flashlight grip.

When handling the weapon the first thing I noticed was the balance. It just "felt" right. The only problem I noticed (for me that is) was the selector. I have small little girly hands so I have to change my grip slightly to hit the selector with my thumb. (Don't really like that.)

Shot 100 rounds of 9mm 115gr blazer through it. (Also 100 rounds is absolutely nothing in a machine gun. Just enough to get me drooling and wanting more.)

It was only "semi" and "Full". No three shot bursts. But I was amazed by how well the trigger was. That is to say by the first magazine I was able to get two and three shot bursts off pretty constantly, and by the time I ran out of ammo I could just about pick two or three rounds when I pulled the trigger.

Another thing that stood out was NO perceived recoil. It was completely controllable and manageable. (And Fun!) Mark ran a simulation of having the target run back and forth spinning for shoot and no-shoot situations at varing distances. quick burst shots were landing just under 4"... just a little bigger than a baseball really.

It was really neat how quick it seemed to line sights up on the target. Ergonomics were great. It just had a familiar feel to it if that makes any sense. It's hard to explain.

Afterwards I held a 10.5" Sabre for comparison. Which is what I have been leaning towards for a SBR. It felt completely different. I have had an AR for over 12 years so I am used to them. But it just felt different. Not as "familiar". The balance as well was very different. Not bad mind you... just different. Maybe it's the HK kool-aid talking but the MP5 just felt better.

The only real down side to shooting it is my wife and kids are in Florida right now... and... well... after shooting it... I... I... just wanted to be held.

Wonder if they make a MP5 shaped pillow that I can snuggle up with on the couch? But if HK did it would prebably cost $200 dollars!

So yeah... this has gotten me thinking more about a clone SBR one day.

Here are some quick Cellphone picts.

Starting a Congregation Shooting Event!

Since there was some interest I thought I would spell this out a little better.

Our Congregation has had some shooting events that have been very popular. So here is how we do it... not the way everyone should do it... but just the way we do it.

So what started all this?
Originally me and some other men were looking for ways to get the other men in the congregation to get to know each other better, and also become more involved in Church. So Asked the men to fill out a list with their hobbies. Figured we'd focus on the most popular hobbies first.

We were surprised at the number of "shooters". :) The main problem members have is just like everyone else... no place to shoot. :(

One of the members is a Chief of Police, and we use his land. (He's set up really well, so we can get two clay throwers there,
plus two areas for pistol ranges. Two bays for stationary targets, and then two tables side by side for pins.) He was instrumental in getting this set up. I think it helps gain a "blessing" when you have someone in either Law Enforcement, or Military (active or retired) involved. It just makes people "feel" better about it. LOL!

So... how do we do it?
Pretty basic... really.

First off we pick a date (a Saturday) about a month or two in advance. Allows members time to buy ammo and plan. It is announced
at Church, as well as a sign up sheet is posted. (It is also a basic liability wavier.)

The weekend before the shoot we ask members that are going to meet "down front" after services. They are given directions, and we go over the very basic stuff... Mainly NO Loaded weapons, and all weapons MUST be checked in by a RSO and placed on the "Gun Table", and ammo on the "Ammo Table".

We feel it is best for us to run a really "cold" range because of the different experience levels of the shooters. We allow shooters 18 and above on the line. Younger if with a parent. If they are on the pistol line then they are the only ones on the line.
(Example: RSO, Dad, son)

(Reason for allowing younger than 18 is that a few member's kids hadn't ever shot a gun before and the parents wanted them to do so in a safe environment.)

We have a quick safety class with range rules before we start.
All weapons get "checked in" by the RSOs...
All slides locked open, cylinders too...
All ammo is placed on a separate table...
No weapons are loaded till your on the line, and your told to.
Blah, blah, blah...

Anyone coming late (and there are always some showing up late) has an RSO goes over with them personally what they missed.

Normally have about five guys acting as RSOs. Two at the clay throwers, one at each pistol site, and a "walker". He fills in when you have to pee... and watches the tables. LOL!

We ask members to bring their own drinks, camping chair and each person donate $5 bucks for the food. (Bar-B-que, chips, beans) We keep a cooler of water in case anyone forgets.

So what did we learn after the first one?

• More members wanted to shoot pistols than clays. Big surprise to us!
• Some came to eat and talk more than anything. Which was cool. The next time we made a kind of setting area where you can hang out and wait to shoot or just talk.
• Women don't like being left out. ;)
The next one we said women were more than welcome to come.
• We really need some more RSOs so we can have more shooters on the pistol lines.
• People love shooting dim' pins! Some had never shot pins before and couldn't believe how much fun it was.

A great time for me is when it's over. After everyone leaves we (the RSOs) get to really shoot! Which is really, really fun.

If you don't have land that you can use... Why not a range? I'm sure something can be worked out with a local range.

I doesn't have to be big...
It can start out with 5 or 6 members at church and grow from there.

Remember why your there...
(This is the preachy part.) You're there to get to know your Brother's and Sisters in Christ! So get out of your comfort zone and talk to these people. Get to know each other. :D Oh yeah... and stay safe.

Jonesing for my Kimber

I've shipped my Kimber BACK to Wilson, as I had some spare cash from working on a natural gas pipeline in Texas last month--I never even saw it...

I've shipped my Kimber BACK to Wilson, as I had some spare cash from working on a natural gas pipeline in Texas last month--I never even saw it before I sent it back, just sent my little brother a work-order form and asked him to take it to FedEx.

I shipped it out for night sights and front-strap checkering the first time, and now it's back for Armor-Tuff, a serrated slide top and rear, and a handful of additional minor changes. Basically, it will be a Wilson on a Kimber frame, for a little over half the money.

My problem is, I now have ZERO 1911's in TN to carry/shoot, and I'm starting to get the itch--BAD. I'm mulling over buying another one, but it will more than likely be a 9mm full-size, and I prefer to carry 4" guns. I thought about an EMP, but any parts would have to come from Springfield--with a "normal" 1911, almost anything can be made to work.

Any ideas or recommendations on what to buy? Looking to keep it under $1k, as that's all the fun-money I have at the moment, until I go back to the pipeline in July, after summer classes.

(Yes, working on a natural gas pipeline is very lucrative--but I'm mostly working down there to pay off all debts before I leave for USMC boot camp next summer.)

The over looked inherent dangers of the .357 sig cartridge.

There are many myths that surround the .357 sig cartridge today. Stories of it's magical like powers, near mythical status and yes... even it's...

There are many myths that surround the .357 sig cartridge today. Stories of it's magical like powers, near mythical status and yes... even it's *ability to produce "one shot" stops by merely physically throwing the round at the assailant with no gun even needed.

I would like to address one well known fact, that is well documented... but sadly not mentioned enough... Chicks dig guys that shoot the .357 sig. Many men that are looking to move to this round fail to really consider this before taking the plunge. Often focusing instead on ballistic tables, barrier tests, automotive glass tests, price per round, and even it's **near legendary performance on Unicorns.

Serious thought should be given by the married or involved male shooter. It has been suggested that you might want to investigate the strength of your relationship before your purchase. Maybe even investigating in some pre-.357 sig relationship counseling. To better strengthen your relationship with your "sig"nifigant other.

Hidden cameras placed at certain gun ranges throughout the United States confirm an almost aphrodisiac type effect on females. It was found that not even firing the round downrange, but simply placing a full box .357 sig ammo (FMJ or HP, it made no difference.) had similar results.

In one documented case, two (really HOT) female underwear models (Believed to be Victoria Secret Models) walked from the far side of the shooting lanes, passed two Navy Seals and a Fireman (with his shirt off) then conversed with a 120 lb. male shooter of a Glock 31 (.357 sig) for FIVE minutes! It is thought that they would have in fact continued to speak to him and given him phone numbers if he had not began to hyperventilate and pass out.

Most scientists believe these involuntary actions are in fact psychological. Females seem to be drawn to the round on a very primal level. The round it self represents both power, strength, protection, and a certain level of suspected financial security. (Because the rounds or so expensive that surely the shooter can lavish his mate with the finer things in life.) All of this on the most basic Freudian level.

This must be weighed heavily before choosing the .357 sig cartridge. Some women might feel threatened by all the sudden attention you will get form other women on the range. While others are confident in the fact that it is they that will be going home with the shooter of the .357 sig.

The single man, no matter how grotesque, malformed, or geeky will indeed reap the social benefits of a move to this most magical of calibers... but with it a heavy price if not handled responsibly. Since the rounds commercial introduction in 1994 STRDs (Sexually Transmitted Range Diseases) have ***tripled among "gun geeks".

In closing... the choice of the .357 sig caliber is a serious one. One that should be reflected on, and carefully considered. It is not called the Viagra of cartridges for nothing.

*This was recorded in a bar fight in Alabama and then confirmed on Mythbusters.

**The fact that there is no more Unicorns is a testament to the effectiveness of the round on both real and mythical creatures.

***This data reflects only "Gun Geeks" that weighed under 110 lbs. and still lived at home.

Well there are going to be SEVERAL changes coming down the road for me and some those may/will cause others. As most of you know I live next to my mother and the house I live in is actually owned by her and we sort of have a bartered rent system for me. Well they are building a pizza place on the lot that faces the highway of which the road we live in comes off of, this lot is behind mom’s house and to the side of my back yard (my back yard goes further back than mom's). Mom has talked about selling her house at times even more lately because of problems with it. Well…as she got back from her walk Monday morning the guy who owns the pizza place lot pulled in her driveway…yep, you guessed it, he wants to buy her place. As it turns out he wants to buy the place I’m on as well. To be honest I’ve not been happy with this location for a while myself. So overall this is probably a good thing, but it does bring up so many other things.

Let me just sort of make a list of the things that are crossing my mind….

Mom is actually planning on moving to TX within a year or so it seems (that is a WHOLE nother situation I’m still not ready to talk about), so the move out of her house will be to just sort of to a “holding place”. However as most know my daughter and her BF are staying with my mother….so not sure what they are going to do, they may try and find a place, they have talked about a place with my mother that they can keep themselves when she moves…so who knows. Of course he is going to have to get some sort of steady/real job to be able to do that. I told Kim yesterday that her and the baby could come back with me, wherever I end up, if she needed to, but the BF couldn’t. Didn’t look like that went over too well. Might be different if he was productive instead of drain.

I have been so used to having my mom next door as a backup for the boys while I was at work. Although there really wasn’t a lot of interaction, she was always there “just in case” well that will not be the case now. Do I need to get a different job? Do they need to go back with their mother? After not paying me any child support for 5+ years, would she want child support from me? Would the court order it even if she said she didn’t want it? Would that be the best for the boys?

Where can I move to? As it is now I barely pay my bills and that is with no money payment for rent…so not sure how I could take up a rent/house payment under my current one income household situation. But, I have thought about moving closer to work, but there are some changes coming at work that could affect my decision/ability to stay there…so do I want to move close to there, then not work there? Right now I don’t have the details of the changes, I really need those before I can know more. But also, while I make ok pay at work, it really hasn’t kept up with things over the last few years, and with overtime being cut out I have actually grossed about 20% less the last few years than the years where I could work overtime. So do I want to stay there anyway? But I doubt I could walk in the door anywhere else around here and make what I do know…so a move to a new place and making less money….that dang sure doesn’t sound good. This could be the “kick in the pants” (opportunity) I need to make a major move. Instead of 1 mile or 10…maybe 100 or even 1000. I hate to say it, but it's not like I'd be leaving any close friends here. I mean I like the guys at work, but for various reasons we don't really interact with each other away from work.

My sons are split…one would like to move out of the area and start fresh, the other wants to stay in the same county we are in now. My brother in NC, well his wife, tells me about places for sale around her sometimes. A cousin in CO tells me about places and job opportunities close to her. My uncle from TX that passed away has a very influential friend in Houston and could probably help get me started there or maybe elsewhere in TX…not sure I want to move from a city with a population of 2500 to the 4th largest city in the country…lol….or do I? If was to go to TX, close to mom or not?…hate say this, but probably not. Of course there are other places too. When I was first divorced I had thought about Hot Springs, AR. That is where I was born and we used to go back there a lot when I was young to see my grandfather…I like the area.

Oh….and Kim’s college and work decisions she is trying to make as well with all of this.

….and this doesn’t even include the actually logistics of moving two different households to two different places. My mother has been in that house for over 35 years and I in this one for 16-17, so lots of stuff to go through, throw away or pack.

Of course you know I tend to over think things anyway…and that is the minor stuff, now that my mind has some real issues to gnaw on, it’s just about to go into overdrive….just hope it doesn’t burn out.

Well……if you don’t hear from me for a little…this is why….just trying to sort things out…not sure how quick or not these things are coming, but…they are coming. It’s not change that scares me as much (although it does a little to be honest) but so much unknown and unsure about the future that is sort of getting to me.

Take care…and thanks for making it through the long blog…

I've never had a blog but I do have a myspace. Maybe this will be fun.

I guess I could talk about my Dobermans and my guns since that is my logon name.

I have two black/rust female Doberman Pinschers. One is 3 years old and her name is Da'Kari pronounced Da-Car-ee, not Daiquiri like the drink. She is cropped and docked. The other is Eden who is just coming a year old and is also cropped and docked. Da'Kari is my first Doberman and now I just can't imagine my life without one. They are very people oriented, have a strong need and desire to be with their person. I can't imagine putting them outside to live. They are very clingy which caused them to be nicknamed "velcro dogs".

I had a red/rust boy named Nash and I lost him at 13 months. He was very bad about eating things he shouldn't and he managed to get ahold of a pair of socks and ate them. It caused complications and we lost him. It broke my heart, he was a sweet natured fellow. Here is a video about him....

http://www.babyjane.ws/video2.html

Next came Eden, she was a gift from a very special friend. She is a beauty and such a sweetheart but very protective of her mama!

As I have grown older and "wiser" I have found in order to feel safe in this ever increasing state of our nation that I must be responsible for my own safety. I have been going to the gym and getting myself in shape and I also decided to get my HCP. Hand guns were new to me but I had a little experience with rifles and actually have a Remington Nylon 66 .22 rifle. The first handgun I shot was a Ruger P89 .9mm and I really liked it, though I was limp wristing with it LOL.

So OK, everyone said I should get a revolver for my first hand gun sooooo my first handgun purchase was a S&W 640 .357/.38 special. though my heart was with the semi automatic .9mm, what can I say.... the 640 was OK but not cheap to target practise with so I bought a Beretta U-22 Neos that I enjoyed shooting but it was still not a .9mm, fast forward to still not being satisfied I ended up getting a Kel-tec P3AT .380 and I really like it a lot but guess what? Yep, still not that .9mm I was dreaming about.....HA.... well I was in Fugates Firearms one day and she had a used Glock 26 .9MM!!!! and also had a nice used Ruger Super Redhawk .44 that my husband had been looking for so we got them both and went home happy little campers.

I really like my Glock 26 and have not been disappointed with the way it shoots, my aim with it and I have never limp wristed with it.

My husband took his HCP class and needed a carry gun so I saw a Charles Daly 1911 that I liked a lot and knew he would like so I did some trading around with my S&W 640 and Beretta Neos and came away with the new Charles Daly and some cash. Now I was down to 2 handguns and decided that wasn't gonna do ;) so I ordered myself a CZ 75D PCR and YES of course it is a .9MM!!! Ha and I love it!

That is how I started and am holding with my interest in handguns, protecting myself and enjoying a hobby with my husband. He is very happy that I love this new interest. Little does he know that he will soon be the proud owner of my little Kel-tec P3AT because I already have my eyes on the Ruger LCP!!!!! :D

In Tennessee open or concealed carry is permisible by law with a permit. Many are of the opinion that conceal carry is best. I'm not sure why that is. They have no statistics to back their claim. They often state, "Well, the bad guy will shoot the person with the visible gun first." I can't agree with that statement. I think if the bad guy sees someone with a gun on their hip he is likely to move on to the next target.
Typically a gun carried open fashion is going to be quicker to draw.
Someone carrying their gun in the open most likely has a permit. How many bad guys carry a gun on their hip?
Open carry is best so get over it.
