Open Carry

In Tennessee open or concealed carry is permisible by law with a permit. Many are of the opinion that conceal carry is best. I'm not sure why that is. They have no statistics to back their claim. They often state, "Well, the bad guy will shoot the person with the visible gun first." I can't agree with that statement. I think if the bad guy sees someone with a gun on their hip he is likely to move on to the next target.
Typically a gun carried open fashion is going to be quicker to draw.
Someone carrying their gun in the open most likely has a permit. How many bad guys carry a gun on their hip?
Open carry is best so get over it.

I prefer the element of surprise and prefer being able to blend. Often open carry draws unwanted attention, not only from the "bad guys" but from the general public (read: sheep) who can and will cause trouble just because your legal carry is stepping on their delicate utopic view of what they think the would should be like.
For me, it's just not worth the hassle and I see distinct advantages of not advertising what I'm bringing to the table.Posted 04-24-2008 at 11:07 AM by TGO David

I want that element of surprise also, i think the bad guys are starting to realize that there is a change anyone may be armed now and that the odds are increasing. I don't want to confirm it for them in advance. And as already said there is the public, and the kids, "look mommy, that man has a gun". The comfort thing I can agree with and I do open carry at home when I'm not planning on leaving for a while, but since my place is hidden in the woods and neighbors are out of sight, public view is not an issue. I can accept and respect that lots of folks don't like the idea of people walking around in public with a firearm on their hip in plain view. I think I must if I expect them to respect my right to carry. I do like the fact that in good old Tn., I do have the option. I just choose not to appear to have a wild west attitude.Posted 04-24-2008 at 01:27 PM by Old goat

I semi agree with kwikrnu. I think if you want to carry open its no problem. Why people insist it is dumb I dont understand.Posted 04-24-2008 at 04:13 PM by Daniel

I can't say either is the "best" I think it is up to each individual to decided.
I guess the one reason I don't OC anymore than I do is the "hassle" factor. Some days I just may not want to explain myself. Or living in such a small town, run out of places to shop etc... But I do think OC is a good way to educate the public and even try to desensitize the "sheep" as well.Posted 04-25-2008 at 01:54 PM by Fallguy

I choose to conceal but with that said there are some places that I go such as Walmart that I don't try to "deep" conceal, I just stick it in my waistband and if it prints I don't worry about it. I have on one occasion carried with a hip holster with a sweatshirt over it and I was uncomfortable with the worry that it was going to show and make people paronoid so I haven't carried that way since.
Right now I am faced with less clothing in hotter weather which makes it harder to conceal and though just carrying it open would be so much easier, I am with the conceal and surprise congregation, I would rather have an advantage if the unforunate time came that I must defend myself. Also being a woman open carrying on my hip makes me feel like people would think I was trying to be "manly" and I don't want to take away from my feminine side.

I prefer concealed most of the time for reasons mentioned above. Since it is summer, a lot more shorts and tshirts, and I don't really care if I print in most places. Besides, most non gun folks never see it, they are to busy not looking around anyway.
Guns&Dobes, I have seen several women that carry IWB and well, nothing wrong with that at all.
