Well, sounds like you WANT to hear that you can put a less than 16" barrel on your AR IF you maintain an overall length equal to or greater than 26".

Unfortunately, that's not the case.

To keep yourself legal, you'll need to maintain a barrel length of at least 16" (or a shorter barrel with a flash suppressor that is permanently attached that extends the barrel length to at least 16") AND maintain a 26" or greater overall length. It's not a "this or that" kind of thing.

Are you sure Thomas Jefferson said that Quote?

Are you sure the word "quote" is to be capitalized?

ETA: I've heard the quote attributed to a wide number of people. Most commonly Jefferson, but also Ford, Goldwater, and Carter. I have also heard it was not a quote, but a paraphrasing of something Jefferson had said once. I'm no historian, and don't claim to be, but I'm least concerned about the origin and most about the message.

This has nothing to do with the your orginal question or has anything to do with NFA firearms or accessories. I WILL NOT put up with a troll in this forum. You have been warned!

Ok, well the best i can figure is that the 26in overall length thing keeps people from having a rifle with a 16 in barrel that is overall shorter that 26in. I guess the round would be right on your cheek, and the trigger would could be half way down the barrel.

you'll have to serialize your lower and it is what is registered as the sbr. the upper is then just a part of the rifle, the registered lower 'is' the rifle in the ATF's eyes.

OAL is measured with the stock fully extended. A rifle has to meet BOTH of these requirements or it requires a $200 tax stamp.
