I've bought a .22 rifle to hopefully use in the ORSA steel challenge match. What would be a good scope to buy that would work best for that type of shooting?

got a price range in mind..... rimfire scopes can cover a pretty broad spectrum.
I put this one on my .22 that sits at the back door for rogue squirrels.... Cheap and dirty, but works like a champ!

Good rimfire scopes can get up to $600 - $700.... just depends on how serious you want to get, I guess.

I was looking at a steel silhoutte site and they go for some gee whiz scopes that cost over $1,000. Probably work better for long range accuracy and less for speed of target acquisition. I haven't been able to find any recommendations for steel challenge. I planned to spend up to $300 if that is the minimum to get a usable scope.

In the steel plate matches speed is key. So, you need optics with a larger field of view. Meaning very little magnification. My choices cheap to expensive would be:
30mm BSA RD30 Red dot $30
42mm BSA RD42 Red dot $65
Millet 1-4x24 DMS $225
EOtech 510 & 511 $450
30mm Aimpoint comp3C $450

If $300.00 is your budget, go with a Cmore or Holosight (EOTECH or Bushnell). Bushnells have been on sale @ Gander lately for $250.00. If you are putting it on a 10-22 go with an older Aimpoint, you can find those cheap. AR with a conversion get the best you can afford and use it later at the Multigun matches.

Speed is a tactic, and a pretty damn good one......
If you want a scope instead of a red dot go with a Weaver V3 1-3X or a Leupold VX-2 1-4X. Or just shoot iron sights you might find you are faster than with a dot or a scope either one.
