Not looking for suggestions on contents of a bug out bag, but suggestions on an actual bag.

I'm considering replacing my ALICE pack w/ a different kind of pack. I'm thinking something with zippered access rather than a top loading pack, so I can get to whatever I need, whenever I need it, and rather quickly.

I was kind of considering one of the USMC's ILBE packs...

Anyone have any cost effective suggestions?

But not that much. I've been on a hiking equipment binge lately. One major piece of gear I picked up was a Gregory Baltoro 70 pack.
40 pounds in my old medium alice (with frame) feels like I'm carrying enough bricks to build a homestead.
A full load in a murse I bought after reading a post here digs in to my shoulder in just the right spot to ride a nerve junction, apparently.
40 pounds in the new pack feels like I've got a coat over my shoulder.
The suspension system for this thing is great. Most of the weight rides on my hips.
I could carry more weight, but the pack is pretty close to full now. I've got about 4 days worth of food in it*, and while a little bulky, food isn't that heavy. OTOH, not sure what else I'd carry. If I needed to carry ammo, I could move my sleeping bag to the top (outside) and easily shove several bandoliers or a half dozen M14 mags in the bottom compartment.

Unfortunately, it isn't molle compatible, thus all the tacticool kids will laugh at me. Seriously, I'd like the ability to add a small pouch here and there, but until someone makes a molle system with this suspension, the tacticool kids will have to catch up to me, first.

Tent - endorsement

I'd put this in product reviews, but there isn't a 'miscellaneous' section. I'm not selling them, have no affiliation with the maker, and 10 seconds on Google will give you the website.

Recently picked up an AppyTrails MkV 5 man tent. Granted, getting 5 people in it would be a bit of a squeeze, but 3 would be comfortable. For one or two it is a palace. For a certain value of palace, that is...

It is well made, quality material and construction. It does not have a floor - pack a separate groundcloth if that matters to you. I'm using a remnant of Tyvek house wrap, but am currently looking at alternatives. If I were to change anything about this tent, I'd add a piece of lightweight mosquito netting to one door, which is pretty easily done. In fact, that is on my "to-do" list, as I have a couple surplus mosquito nets.

Setup isn't difficult - maybe 5 minutes, tops.

The outstanding characteristic of this tent is it's weight. Well under two pounds. It packs nicely, too - I have it in a side pocket of my pack. My sleeping bag is bulkier. Heck, 3 or 4 pairs of good heavy socks would be bulkier, for that matter.

For the size and weight, comparable to a poncho or tarp shelter, I don't know of anything better on the market.

We can prepare ourselves all we want for disaster. It could be natural, or manmade. I think the natural we all have a handle on. We survive it hopefully and go back to our homes if they are still standing. What would happen in a government collapse senario? What would happen if our government did as Germany did in it's collapse and start selling off our real estate and natural resouces? Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac have 52% of the housing in the US plus all the federal lands. Could they do that? Look at the state of Alaska. As big as it is the Feds own most of it. They have locked up imense natural resources along with oil and natural gas. They have classified a pool of oil thats thought to be a larger reserve than Saudia Arabia's supply. Could they bail out this country as Russia did by selling off Alaska? (Seward's folly)
My question is this.... What state do you consider to be the best survival state?
I'm all for being by myself where there is an abundance of fish and game. I'm also looking to be near our border with Canada. There may actually be folks fleeing our government. I'm thinking northern border states. I have lived in Ak for a long time and it's a possibility, although every day is survival and game is not as easy as you'd think to come by. Weather is definately a factor. Maine, Minnesota, Montana.

I have been thinking a lot lately about which shtf scenario is more likely. A lot of people seem to think it may be the collapse of the dollar and I have heard several "experts" lately say you should have some of your investments in something that can be bartered, like gold. I am thinking in a shtf situation very few thing would be worth more than ammunition. I know we are just getting over a run on ammo, but I think most people were buying for themselves. What does everyone think of ammo as an investment?
