Question Weaver versus Picatinny

Here is my boneheaded question of the day: If a sight says it has a Weaver mount will it be compatible with a Picatinny rail?

I was looking at this Trijicon, Inc. : Brilliant Aiming Solutions .

Thanks for the quick answer.

The last paragraph said: "...it means that accessories designed for a Weaver system will, in most cases, fit on a “Picatinny” system."

Most cases but looking at the Trijicon web page it says the sight can come with the Weaver mount. If it does not specifically say Picatinny does that mean it is not compatible?

I always imagined the rings designed for weaver bases would fit a picatinny rail... the picatinny just has more slots you can 'pic' from, whereas the weaver does not have many options.

I agree.
I have a Leupold Mk 4 that fits a picatinny like it was made for it.

That depends on the spacing and size of the mounting screws. The size of the recoil grooves on a Picatinny rail is .204" with .394" CTC spacing. Weaver recoil grooves are .180" with no definite CTC spacing. So if you have a Picatinny rail, then Weaver type screws will fit in the recoil groove. But if the spacing is not adjustable like it would be with standard weaver style rings, then you might have a problem there. Standard, single mounting screw Weaver style rings on a typical scope are adjustable over the length of the scope, so recoil groove spacing shouldn't be an issue. For a product that has a definite, non-adjustable distance between mounting screws, it should be built to the Picatinny spacing, since Weaver doesn't have a definite spacing distance. That may not be the case though, if a company wants to sell you a different mounting bracket for Weavers and Picatinnys.

Your best bet to know for sure may be to email or call Trijicon and get the specifics on the particular sight/mount you are looking at. Which product are you looking at?

The Trijicon Weaver mount won't work on a Picatinny mount. You need the flattop mount they have for their sights.

I got an answer from them here is what they told me...

Thank you for your interest in Trijicon products. I do apologize as I am still replying to inquiries from last Saturday 10/31. You will want to consider RX14 or RX23 equipped Reflex sights for your application. Please contact us if you need further assistance.
