Have you contacted Nikon yet? If not, you may be getting yourself all wrapped around the axle for no reason here. Call them. Only then will you know if you should be panicking or not.
Chances are the cost of repair will be only a small fraction of the cost of a new camera.

There is a great place in Hendersonville - Welcome to Forest Camera Repair try them if Nikon doesn't help.
