Blueing Pen?

Has anyone used gun blueing pens to do touch ups? How were the results and would you recomend use or just have the gun re-blued?

They work "okay" for small touch-ups but I've seen this stuff come off eventually with some gun cleaning solvents. If it's an entire firearm or a larger part of one, I'd have it re-blued professionally rather than ghetto it with one of those pens.

Really small scratches it will work marginally...holster wear it does no good.

I believe that these pens are sold so that people can temporarily doctor up guns to look better than they really are at gun shows and such. Hopps takes most of the color right out.

Got one - a temporary fix for small blems, slightly better than a sharpie.

I have had good results if you clean the area with acetone or degreaser and then rub the cold blu in with a 0000 steel wool a couple of times. I use Birchwood Casey Super Blu and Perma Blu. I have used 44/40 also with good results. If done properly it will not come off with gun solvents and works well on fine scratches and small marks. I would not recommend doing large areas.

I, too, have had good results with Birchwood Casey products. In my experience, if there is enough damage to warrant thoughts of having the gun reblued, then cold blue is likely to be unsatisfactory.
