8 Point MISS twice- I Feel Sick
Guess I picked a good night to go hunting, I'm starting to see signs the rut is almost on now.. Had a new rub 20 ft from my stand.
I had a great 8 pointer walk right down a trail to me, I drew back my bow so when he stepped into the shooting lane at 24 yards I would be ready, he stopped and made a scrap next to some doe estrus I had put out while I waited at full draw for about 3 minutes.. Then as he walked into the lane, I stopped him and shot., the arrow smacked and he jumped up and didn't run. He looked around trying to figure out what that noise was. I shot under him and hit a tree root. I was in total shock because I thought I had a good steady shot and wasn't completely sure I had missed but he didn't run.. So I realized he wasn't going to run so I loaded another arrow and got ready to shoot when he entered another shooting lane, I stopped him again and this time when I shot the arrow it hit a branch and it tumbled and hit his hoof. He jumped again but still didn't run, he acted more like he stepped on a thorn. He still never saw me and didn't spook, I just could watch as he walked off, I didn't have a clear 3rd shot. I didn't hold my form and didn't set for the first shot at all like your supposed to.. the 2nd shot would of been good, well your know how that went. Funny how much your brain forgets everything when a deer like that is so close. I think he'll be around again I hope. This was the same spot I shot the 5 pointer two weeks ago. I feel sick... but I am glad I didn't wound him or anything like that. Talk about getting the heart going.... it's still going..

That sucks. Do you use a salt lick or a whacky tabacky lick? That deer needs a drug test, sounds like. Good luck next time.

This is why I love bow hunting. I am glad you missed him clean, if you had to miss. Get back out there and get some more Hot Doe pee out there and get you one of those doe in heat can calls and get him back in there and stick him good.
Remember, bend at the waist and hold your form. I missed an 8 pointer 2 times a couple years ago. I was luck enough to get him on the third arrow, but I nearly shot a stump point at him before I realized what I grabbed and swapped again. Thank goodness for dumb deer, other wise I might not ever get one.

If I'm going to miss like that I'm glad it was clean,
I'd of been sick if I gut shot him because of the branch. trying again later in the week to maybe catch him back again looking for a doe.. Great looking deer though.. hope to show you a picture one day..

Best of luck to you. I've never been on a bowhunt, so I have no room to talk.

I know that sick feeling. The feeling of experience gained
![]() I missed a doe a few days ago. I ranged her - I knew what pin to use - I can shoot a 3" group at that range on a target but for some reason I used the top pin and shot under her. I somehow got a rogue case of "buck fever" on a little doe when it came time to shoot. I rushed it for no reason. Whenever I miss a deer, it just makes me appreciate the next one even more. |
