JACKSON, Tenn. - Federal investigators have arrested a U.S. Army soldier on charges he attempted to sell four hand grenades and an anti-tank rocket and launcher to an undercover officer.

U.S. Attorney Lawrence Laurenzi said at a Thursday news conference in Jackson that the Ft. Campbell soldier, 29-year-old Pfc. Joshua Bartlett Etherton, was indicted September 21.

He was arrested Wednesday night.

The prosecutor said the transaction was arranged after police in Paris received a tip.

Laurenzi said the weapons were stolen from the Army post.

He declined to discuss who the intended buyer was.

Etherton is assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, and has been assigned to Ft. Campbell since March 2008.

He has had one deployment to Iraq.

Proceedings to discharge Etherton from the Army have begun.

What an idiot----when I was @ Campbell, you would get your a@@ riped if you had any blank ammo out side of the field------29 yrs old---that is a long time to sit in the Brig

That was my thought. I would have thought he would have picked up some more rank during, or coming back from, a tour in Iraq... then again, what he's being charged w/ certainly speaks for his character.
