NASHVILLE -- A Tennessee legislative committee on Tuesday moved the state to the forefront of efforts by conservatives to reassert "state sovereignty" and rein in the federal government for usurping its constitutional authority.

Acting on a resolution overwhelmingly approved by the legislature in May, a specially appointed "Committee of Conference and Correspondence" voted to send letters to the other 49 state legislatures, inviting them to join Tennessee in a "working group ... to enumerate the abuses of authority by the federal government and to seek repeal of its assumption of powers" and mandates it has imposed on states... Sounds like some people are getting their patriotic fervor back.

I'm all for asserting "Sovereignty" from the Federal Government but the Constition already guarantees that to a degree according to the tenth amendment.

The jesture is symbolic in nature. Without teeth it is meaningless and the first time highway funds, "stimulus" funds or some other pork-barrel dollars are withheld, the people in Nashville will cower in the corner and say "we're sorry", "we didn't mean it", "please send us money", etc.

If I recall correctly the last time a state declared true sovereignty was in the 1860's. The Federal Government would have none of it then either.

Think happy thoughts, Peter. Everytime you say something like that a patriot dies.

This is definitely a step in the right direction, even if it is mostly symbolic. Without the money that the government receives from the citizens of the states, they have nothing. The federal government doesn't give anything to anyone. They take from the people and redistribute as they see fit.

I'm not trying to bring on any negativity, just profoundly pessimistic about what the government in this county has come to on a local, state and national level.

If one state stands up and says "Enough", it's a start, but a whole lot of the other states need to get on board before any changes are made. Under our current system and state of affairs, I just don't see it happening.

But if one more d*** stimulus dollar is paid out by this government I may secede myself. I will form a 1/3 acre country known as Garufa. We'll have to keep the borders closed as only a couple or few citizens can be accomodated.
