I can't imagine doing this job without as many cameras/recorders as possible to get it all.

Not only to protect you against false claims from suspects but to protect you from idiotic members of the command staff and incompetent supervisors who lack the ability to recognize aggressive lawful police work where it is called for.

I use to carry a recorder and activated it during any citizen contact. Now with technology the way it is and my small Olympus recorder will record over 100 hours, I just start it at the beginning of a shift and cut it off when it is over. The AAA batteries will last a couple of days, and I get EVERYTHING recorded.

I just download the files to my laptop for safe keeping.

At my last department, when I was still on patrol (before my Investigator days) I did the same thing. Most of us in my precinct picked ones up from Wal Mart or Radio Shack and wore them on our belts.

All was fine until an Officer used his to prove himself in the right during a disciplinary hearing, the next day a memo was fired off by the command staff prohibiting the use of personally owned recorders for any duty assignment.

I am not sure that would stop me. I would still protect myself during a civil suit if needed. Otherwise it would stay hidden.

If there was ever a strong argument for unions, this is one of them.
