That is what was said in the Tennessean article. Not saying they reported it correctly but it is what they said.

Pointing a weapon is a threat of murder, but not an actual attempt at it so the son isn't guilty of that crime.

The father yelling "shoot them" could be take as conspiracy or sollicitation to comit the crime which are Class A and Class B felonies, respectively.

All of this is from my totally amatuer understanding. I would love for one of the other legal nerds in the group to let me know if I'm on the mark or off the mark as they understand it.

As for the officers firing, they definitely showed tremendous restraint and would have been justified in opening fire. That said, I wouldn't pass judgement on them for not firing as we weren't there and don't know all the details of what went down. I prefer to simply congratulate them on a job well done.

Now what about this probation only crap???? In my opinion, threatening the life of a police officer is one of the worst crimes that can be comitted. If they are willing to act this way towards law enforcement, I can't imagine that they would be willing to respect the rights of anyone in our society and there needs to be something more stiff.

I agree. There must be more to the story than what is being reported if the officers involved are satisfied with this plea agreement. I can't imagine how at least the father and son didn't get some pretty serious jail time.
