  2. I wish I had a quarter of the skills these Swiss gunsmiths had.
  3. I bought 2 Swiss rifles off the Gunboards forums and I was wondering if anybody knew anything about them. https://imgur.com/gallery/dOBw5ex They are very well made, and the triggers are very nice. I haven't gotten to try them on the range yet, due to rain, but I have high hopes in the accuracy department. I didn't know if these were actually used as trainers for their military, or if they were more of novelties/ civilian marksmanship programs over there. I can't find much information on Google, as to when they would have been made, or how many were converted. All of the serial numbers are matching. There are no troop tags under the buttplates. And I can't find any import markings on them. The Sahli sight adjuster is incremented from 0-5. I'm not sure if that's in 10 meter increments or what. Here are what hi listed them as. G89 action to K31 by Ernst Frey, RF FP w/ new barrel & #18 Sahli sight adjuster G96 action to K31, RF FP and new barrel
  4. I'm still awaiting approval on the CMP Forums so I can post questions there...
  5. Your powder coating looks alot better than mine.
  6. It's cool seeing the score book. We should try to replicate the USMC qualification tests, and see how we score in comparison. Your grandfather almost made Expert. Standards for marksmanship in the USMC changed little between the wars and during WWII a Boot shot for record on the KD range at three distances: 500 yards: Ten rounds, slow fire, prone position 300 yards: Ten rounds, rapid fire, prone Five rounds, slow fire, kneeling Five rounds, slow fire, sitting Everyone hated the sitting position! 200 yards: Ten rounds, rapid fire, sitting Ten rounds, slow fire, off hand With five points awarded for each round a score of 250 points would be what was known as "The perfect possible", which was virtually impossible to reach due to the use of standard service rifles and old surplus ammunition leftover from WWI. Shoot 190 and you were a Marksman. Shoot 215 and you were a Sharpshooter. Expert meant shooting 225 or better. In those days the Corps paid extra for crack shots: A Sharpshooter received and additional $2 per month with an Expert receiving five extra bucks. Back in the early days of the war when a private was paid $21 per month this was HUGE money and Boots would bust their asses to qualify as at least a Sharpshooter. Even when pay was advanced to $51 per month that amount extra money (10% extra pay for Expert) was hardly small change.
  7. Every time I've looked at them, it's too hard for me to try and tell what the guns actually are. Here's a list of some of the confirmed guns that appeared throughout the series. http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Andy_Griffith_Show,_The
  8. I highly doubt they're gonna ever be any cheaper than they are right now. If nothing else, look at it as an investment and if you decide later on that the AR isn't the platform for you, I'm sure you'll be able to get your money back or turn a small profit.
  9. The hinged floor plate was a surprise for me. I'd never seen one before, and when I pushed the button in, the mag plate just kind of dumped out the bottom, and I was like, that's cool. I've been trying to read up on the connection between Argentina and Germany back then. And reading up on the Mauser brothers
  10. Bought if off the Gunboards Forum. He was a dentist that was looking to limit his collection and get out of the cartridge all together. So I got the gun, bayonet, Lee dies, RCBS neck sizer die, and 300 pieces of brass as a package deal.
  11. I find it odd that the Germans manufactured them, but didn't use the 8mm Mauser round. I guess the Argentines still had stockpiles of 7.65 laying around from the 1891 guns.
  12. Bought a 1909 Argentine off a guy this past week, and don't know a ton about it yet. Thought everyone would appreciate it. I'm wondering what the differences are between this one and the 1891. I've loaded up 50 rounds of 7.65x53 to try out. She's a tall one Crest The bayonet looks like something Inigo Montoya would use to avenge the death of his father.
  13. I still need some kind of cheek riser, I'm thinking of making my own leather buttpad/riser sometime in the future
  14. I've been thinking about putting a scope on my K31 for years, because I believe that my eyesight is the limiting factor as to the accuracy of the rifle. After doing some Googling, I've found 3 different ones. https://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/rings-mounts-amp-bases/rifle-bases/aluminum-k31-clamp-on-mount-sku100000725-1666-6109.aspxThis one was the original one that I was going to get, but I didn't know if the mount being offset to the right of the line of sights would be a nuisance or not. I've read that the amount of windage that would change is almost negligible, but it might get annoying always trying to adjust for it. Then I found these 2 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XJD59NQ/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I2VPS98XFQ6FU0&colid=N0K6KLP2TKLY&psc=0 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075NFCR7Z/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IXKY62MEU75GQ&colid=N0K6KLP2TKLY&psc=0 One is a "scout mount" which I kind of like because it would be completely out of the way of loading/working the action. But I'd also have to buy a scout scope with a longer eye relief. Which may or may not be a good thing. I haven't had any real experience with them, and they seem to be maxed out around 7x, which I'm not sure if that'll be enough zoom or not. The full length version on Amazon, is double the price. Also, not sure how solid it would be since it's attached to the rear sight base, and extends all the way back. Plus is looks like they tried to make it to where it would be out of the way of loading and manipulating the rifle as best they could, but I can see how it could still be in the way more than I'd want. So does anybody have any experience with these (or other mounts) I really don't want to have to drill and tap my gun.
  15. I went to BPS in Sevierville, had to ask at the counter, and he just looked at me and asked "what are you gonna use it for?" Told him to reload some 45-70 rounds for an old Springfield Trapdoor, and he went in the back and brought it back. Had to pay for it at the gun counter, and I asked if I needed to take it out to my vehicle before I did the rest of my shopping and he said no, it's just store policy. Apparently there's only one person that is allowed to sell it. Also, had my dad pick up a pound of it at Hearthstone Guns in Afton TN.
  16. Just a few years ago, Weidners had all 5 Swiss rifles for $1700. Sadly, I missed that boat
  17. I bought a Swiss 1911 Long from classic and just got it about 3 days ago. Holy crap the trigger on it is amazing. Haven't had it out on the range yet, but with the long sight radius, and that trigger, I can't imagine it being hard to hit the bullseye with
  18. https://www.classicfirearms.com/7-5-swiss-ammo-664 Not the biggest fan of classic because they've been upping the prices of their rifles, but they do have GP11 in stock. Congrats on the K31, I've been wanting another one, but been trying to get a complete Schmidt Rubin rifle collection before doubling up
  19. Shot both of these over the weekend, and very pleased with them both. Out of the two, I prefer the m94 overall, but the way the Krag loads is just so cool and unique. I ordered a larger aperture disc for the rear peep sight, and it just came in the mail today. It's a "hunting" aperture so I'll see how I like it. That tiny "target" aperture is super hard for me to see anything through, and nearly impossible if there's any sun in your eyes. FYI, both of these rifles are recommended to shoot milder loads than the commercially available ammo. I put 38.0 grains of Reloader 22 behind some 140 gr Hornady SP Interlock bullets, and I think I'll stick with that load for now. Very sweet shooting guns. Maybe I'll be able to take them out to 500-600 yards soon..
  20. The m96 rifles are relatively easy to find and still reasonably priced
  21. The Norwegian Krag is also missing it's cleaning rod, but I refuse to pay $100 for one lol
  22. I wish I could find a database of proof marks, cause there's like 4 different marks on the receiver.... I may have to learn to speak Norwegian
