Usually, when Hollywood highlights something as technical as this, they do what looks good and get it wrong.

ultrasound solution changes brass?

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of brass cleaned by US. Not sure of the solution used, but the brass was dull, almost a light tarnish and the case was not slick to touch. I ran in again in SS media. It was cleaner on the inside of case, but basically did not change to look or feel of the brass....certainly not the high, bright and slick finish brass usually has. Anybody know what happened. I'll try and find what solution was used, but I am wondering if it has changed the brass' strength? I thought I would go ahead and load it, but simply not reuse it again.

Optic for a 30-30 Marlin

I've been staring at my Marlin 336 for a while now wondering what to put on top of the XS rail. I've upgraded to a Wild West Guns big loop lever and put the XS long rail mount on it. Next in line will be to trim the barrel down to 16.5" and thread it (need more things to put a 30cal can on). While I'm waiting for the lathe at the shop to get freed up for personal projects, I'm in need of a scope/optic for this nice lever action. I don't forsee this being something I shoot past 100 yards with since subsonic 30-30 is about as long range as throwing a rock.

I put on an EOTech I had sitting around and it looked too goofy, couldn't take the rifle seriously anymore. Next I tried a Bushnell TRS-25 (Micro red dot), it looked good but I don't have any extras of those and pulled it from my 300BO to check out. I'm still leaning towards something with a bit of magnification though and I love mil-dots.

So my question is this; What are you running on your 30-30 lever action, why did you go with that and what reticle does it have?

My 300 Blackout Savage Striker build

Here are some pictures of my 300 Blackout build using a Savage Striker. It is a pistol based on a Savage short action that was built for a few years. They are actually really hard to find and after 3 weeks of calling and emailing every person who listed one for sale in the last 18 months I found one.

It is a left hand bolt with a right hand eject. The trigger is actually pretty nice for having a linkage. Hoping to get a chance to get it zeroed and have fun with it this weekend.

The barrel started life as a 416SS Green Mountain blank with 8 twist. It was cut to 16.5" and threaded for a muzzle brake installed for now. As soon as I get my forms back from the ATF for what will be my form 1 can I will be chopping the barrel to 10"-12" and threading it. I also have a 223 barrel and looking for a 308 barrel. Swapping barrels literally takes 15 minutes.

Shooting it is not bad at all.
My First Pistol Has Arrived!!!!

As some of you know, I looked at and shot a lot of different guns. It ended up coming down to the Sig P226 or S&W M&P9. For me, there were really only a couple fine details of difference. Thankfully there's a pretty decent aftermarket for both and it's kind of like cars (my primary hobby)... it's more fun if you can play with it a bit. With that in mind, I chose the Smith & Wesson M&P9 Carry and Range Kit! I swear I bought the last kit in the country (the kit comes with an extra magazine, speed loader, and other goodies). Without further ado...

My biggest problem with this gun was the trigger. In comes Apex Tactical. Everyone who has experienced the Apex trigger swears it makes it just as smooth as the Sig. So, I picked up the trigger kit and TruGlo Trillium/Fiber Optic night sights. I wanted a cleaning mat and from what you see, I even found one that I thought was kind of cool, shows a full break down of the gun on it.

This kit came with the UpLULA speed loader and this thing is bad ass! Any speed loader is better than doing it by hand but this one is amazing. The only downside would be if you're out in the field and didn't have a table or something to load on. Kind of relies on the mag being set on something.

Once again, thanks to D&T for handling the transfer and many of you for your input and recommendations!

I'm really not sure whether this post should be in "ammunition & reloading" or one of the political fora, since it straddles both, and the company seems more about making a statement than selling things. That said, a company called Jihawg is selling rounds in many popular centerfire pistol and rifle calibers with a coating on the bullet which apparently contains some kind of pig extract, the intent of which is to prevent someone engaging in Jihad from entering heaven if hit by one. I honestly don't know what to think...it's a funny idea in a protest sense, but at the same time, I wouldn't keep any around, since it seems silly, likely to start conversations with offended people I don't care to converse with, and it's unlikely that I'll be forced to engage any jihadis anytime soon. One thing is for certain - when I saw that they existed, I knew I had to share my discovery with all you fellow TGOers. Below are a couple targets they sell, to give you an idea of what they're all about. Interesting? Funny? Unnecessarily provocative? Discuss.

Tula small pistol primers...a first date

I've been sitting on a case of Tula small pistol primers since fall. I got a fantastic price on them (thank you DLM), so I just stashed them for hard times and kept using my Winchester primers until they were gone.

I finally cracked them open and reloaded about 400 rounds last week. I shot 170 of them Sat. at the range and had more than a few that didn't go bang.

I only shot 2 partial mags in my Glock 17 and had 6 bad primers. I gave up and put the Glock away. I loaded the duds into my CZ 75 Shadow and double and triple struck them all and only one went off. I shot about 150 more rounds pretty evenly between the Shadow and my CZ P-01.

At the end of the day I walked away with 13 rounds that wouldn't go off no matter how many times I fired them and much better muscle memory for clearing failures. So, it wasn't a complete loss.

If I had only given each round a single chance, I think I would have had about 1in 10 that were dead. What do you guys think about that failure rate? Is that par for the course with Tula?

Question for Dolomite

I need a new hunting rifle and am pretty set on a Savage. I've read a few posts on here that led me to believe you know your way around their rifles.

So, this is what I want it for and what I think I want. I need a .308 that I can drag around the hills out west. Weight is an issue, but I'm not a wuss. No bull barrel, but lightweight model not required either. I am wh%^& for accuracy so I need an accurrate rifle, I like Savages. I am a former Marine and like to use my sling when shooting. That being said, I am leaning towards a wood stock. Both for looks and so the tension from the sling does not pull the stock and make the stock touch the barrel.

I am not a gunsmith, have never even done minor projects so I am leaning towards a model 14. Budget is $700 for the rifle, I already have some optics for it.

What are your thoughts? Do you know a reputable builder around TN or KY? I love Savage actions and the accu-trigger. I am not against a factory rifle but am open to any reasonable suggestions. Thanks,

Joe

P.S. Of course anyone else can chime in as well. Thanks in advance for all the input.

"Well Stocked" or "Hoarder"?

I have heard many TGO members make reference to the fact that they are "well stocked" when it comes to their ammo supply. I have also heard the term "hoarder" used to describe people trying to buy ammo. Where do you draw the line between well stocked and hoarder. What do you consider to be a good number of rounds to keep on hand at all times?

I'll go first.

1,000 rounds of each caliber center fire gun that I own.

5,000 rounds of .22lr or .22mag.
