Where are the American made C&R eligible guns?

Ok I keep hearing that Obomination is behind this. But I need facts. So here goes.

How come for the most part I can only find Russian or Chinese surplus (junk?) for sale by C&R eligible rules? Yeah we have fun with our Nagant, Mosin and Tokeravs but I want something American.

Were no American guns made 50 or more years ago? Regarding WWII weapons something American made would really add to my collection. BTW I can't afford an $1100 M1 Garand from CMP.

but as with anything the LAW is subject to interpretation so....

not sure anything here would be more affordable than the CMP Garand you mentioned though, I know the S&W 41-1 surely isn't neither is my '03-A4

Hmmm my .401 Herters might be getting close to 50 yrs. old

Good Luck,.

You should have been in the mil surp market 20 or 30 years ago.  U.S. Mil surps like the M1 Carbine were much cheaper and plentiful.  Now they command premium price when you can find them.  CMP currently has Springfield M1 Garands in fair condition for $625 plus $25 S&H with a 120 day wait.  That's a good price. Otherwise, you have to pay $1000 for one.  CMP is currently accepting bids for M1 Carbines (Marked Bavarian Police and mix and match).  I have no clue what they usually sell for at auction.  Honestly, the only game in town are the Com Block weapons.  There are some Mausers and some Swiss Ks out there as well, but they are getting rare and are starting to command higher prices.

As far as US Military surplus weapons go there simply are no more stockpiles of them.  They where exhausted years ago.  The exception to that general rule is the CMP which only sells what it returned to the Army by other countries and VFW groups.

Once our military adopted a new rifle they often just sold off the obsolete ones to the open market and did not generally stockpile mass quantities of them like the commies did.  Now the former communist countries are clearing out their arsenals of the old stuck and we get to buy it all

Another is the general American philisophy on acquiring weapons.  Contracts where extended when rifles needs and contracts terminated when no longer needed.  A fine example is the M1 Carbine.  Over 6 million where produced in a short 3 year period.  At the end of WWII all contracts where cancelled and not another one was built.  Communist countries but millions upon millions of weapons when they where not even needed, partly due to military doctrine, party due to socialistic work programs.

Also, in the grand scheme of things, we Americans just did not produce weapons on the scale of other countries.  It is estimated that over 36 MILLION Mosins produced of all varieties.  Germany alone produced close to 16 MILLION Mauser 98K's just during WWII, that doesn't even include the previous 40 years.  Yugoslavia made millions of Mauser pattern rifles for years after WWII that were already obsolete and never even used, just stored for a NATO invasion. That's just three examples.

Off the top of my head America produced:

A little over 6 million M1 Garands

A little over 6 millions M1 Carbines

Around 1.5 million M1903 rifles

Just over 2 million M1917 rifles

etc.

There are plenty out there and they are all C&R, you just have to keep an eye out for a price you can live with.  They are just no massive stockpiles left here or overseas to be imported.

What Garufa said. Remember, there is a world of difference between military surplus and curio and relics. The hard part isn't finding C&R guns, they're all over. The hard part is finding dealers who will ship to your door and otherwise honor your C&R.

They're out there and the hunt is at least half the fun of the purchase.

The other half is waiting on the UPS man to deliver that $69 rifle to your door then opening the box to find out what you got is even better than what you thought you were getting.

Thanks all for the replies.

We did make a trip to the CMP in Port Clinton, Oh. Thought we would get a rack grade or a notch up M1 at a reasonable (to us) price. All they had in stock were special grade selling for I believe the total was $1,056.00 with tax out the door. No shipping.

Of course all of them looked really great.

However at this point in time that price is beyond my limit. So with much anticipation I am saving up my allowance and will try again next year.

The reason there were so many European surplus guns is because War was the sport of Kings.  European countries went to war at the drop of a hat.  Weapons HAD to be stockpiled because no ruler wants an armed peasantry. Declare war on your neighbor...arm the farmers and city hoodlums and have at it.  when it's over collect the guns and get them ready for the next time.  America didn't work like that.  For the first hundred and fifty years we were hard to get at.  Our people were armed and very good at unconventional warfare.  And we were protecting us...not some petty tyrant.

The point to remember is that ALL firearms over 50 years old are automatically C&R.  So, anything made before 1964 is a C&R.  In another two months, that will change to anything made before 1965.  There are a LOT of interesting guns that fall into that category.  Colt SP1 AR-15s are now C&R if there serial number is early enough.  More and more of the semi-auto rifles that were imported in the 1960's will fall into that category from now on.  Most of those are pretty expensive already.

The day of the cheap imports is over.  Politics killed it.  Obama and Kerry won't allow anything in that they can keep out.  (Kerry is involved because the State Department approves imports) The UN now pays countries to destroy weapons and ammo.  There are still some large stockpiles out there.  Russia still has some large piles of WWII stuff.  China has more very large piles of very interesting things!  And other countries have rooms full that they would sell if there was a profit to be made.  It costs almost nothing to stockpile firearms and ammo.

But, the only market for surplus these days is the US.  And until we get Obama and cronies out, and manage to get someone into power who will allow the surplus back in, it's not going to happen.  Notice that I didn't say 'Republican'.  After what the Republicans have done to us the last ten years, I have no trust in that party, either.  Don't vote for a 'party'.  Vote for the person.
