matchstick crossbow

The demise of my desktop trebuchet was a sad day. That thing was fun. It would launch a peppermint candy around 30'. 1d9c980a53282b65c9a877ba1c50c324.jpg

Here's my new office weapon. It slings a match hard enough to knock over a pack of smokes at 10' away (when I can hit it).18433aadfab5b5f49d941e79044e18ce.jpg
Launch some strike-anywheres at a brick wall and they will make a loud pop sound ...
You know those little snap/pop whatchamacallits at the fireworks store that feel like a lil sack full of gravels til you throw them on the ground or squeeze them too hard and they pop? I'm gonna try taping some to the ends, so they "explode" on impact.

That's what S/A's do when you shoot them at a hard surface. Try it with a BB gun, just drop it down the barrel and shoot ; no BB required. Edited by Fourtyfive

Reminder: Need to get BigK out of the house more often....

This is what happens when I don't get out there on a regular basis.

You're just jealous because it still takes you 3 tries to tie your own shoes ... 4 tries if you forget how the "bunny went under the log" story goes.

Have you tried adding fletchings to the matches?

Because of how short the matchstick is and how it has to lay in the channel on top of the crossbow, fletchings would get torn right off. Regardless, you'd be surprised how stable they fly. Occasionally, a warped or malformed one will curve in flight, but the straight ones go pretty darn straight.

Must be the extra weight of the match on the front helping it fly straight. Either way pretty cool! I have been wanting one of those USB powered desktop launchers for a while now but this is just as cool.
