80 year old NC gun registry law repealed

Recommended Posts

Interesting. Unless it has changed, NC requires a permit just to PURCHASE a handgun. OhShoot has always called it the Maryland of the south.

I do know it's gotten better in the last 2 years. They changed a lot of laws for the better.

I remember; I still have a permit from the early 90s. I use to get another permit as soon as I used one so PCSed with my last one.

Having a permit exempts you from the background check. Without a permit you can still buy a firearm but you must go through a background check.

Well, I was expecting it to have something to do with Race before I ever opened it up and I was right. Also you have a historian that thinks the records might be of vital statistics and a major part of history.

Where was this historian when they were re writing our U.S. History Books used in our schools that had a great many if not all the history of Slavery and a good portion of the Civil War removed.

They said that the old history books were very racial and discriminated against African Americans so after the Civil Rights Bills were signed into law the history books got re written and a part of this nations history was erased at the same time.

I agree with all my heart that those were some very dark times in this country's history and I don't think any one man has the right to buy another man into slavery and I never ever will but that was a part of our heritage that many of the young African American Children will never know and will never be able to see how far they have come and have that pride to know how far they have come. They are not held back by the White people. They are held back by their own leaders............jmho

The only thing they will know is what lies people like Jesse Jackson and and Al Sharpton tell them.......................JMHO!!!!

Near as I can find, whatever this change in the law is, you still have to get a handgun purchase permit in NC, for FFL or private transaction, and having a carry permit does not negate that.

If that has changed, I can't find any credible reference saying so, and certainly none of the state sites show it to be so. I see references to a bill in 2013 that would have nuked the permit, but apparently it didn't pass.

Could be wrong of course, but seems this change may only affect the retention of the records?

For those too lazy to click the link, the law was a requirement for citizens of Durham county (only) to register their guns. Likely a Jim crow law. I suspect an archivist could research newspapers of the time to try and learn more, buy they seem only interested in retaining the registration papers because they are "historical".

Sorry, but you are mistaken.  NC has for several years now allowed a concealed carry permit to eliminate the need for a pistol purchase permit.  If you don't have a concealed carry permit, you need a purchase permit for a handgun.  Look at the attorney general's website or the website for Grass Roots North Carolina, the state-level RKB organization, if you want to confirm this.  I lived in NC until moving to TN in February and I well recall how happy we were when the change in state law came about.

This latest change affects only Durham County, which was the only county with handgun registration.  As the article suggests, the law was implemented to harass black citizens.  I'm glad it's gone.

Appreciate the clarification ... added to the ole data tank, I mean bank. ;)

The carry permit does serve in lieu of NICS check during actual purchase from FFL also, right?

Yes, it does, since the requirements for a NC concealed carry permit are more stringent than NICS background checks.
