.45 Small Primer Brass

Recommended Posts

I reckon if you were loading small primer brass right up to the edge of high pressure sign and then you used the same data for large primer then it would likely push you over the edge into the high pressure sign zone. If you have a load that you have been loading in the large primer brass then safety wouldn't be a concern if moving down to small primer brass. I can't tell any difference myself.

It's been my experience that .45 ACP is the most forgiving cartridge I've ever loaded. If I change OAL due to ogive changes there's barely any difference in accuracy working up the new loads. About the only time I've seen what I'd call a big change in accuracy that took a lot of work to get right was when I first switched to lead bullets.

So, I wasn't the least bit surprised when I tried some SPP brass and the load needed no changes at all to be accurate. If I knew I could always get my hands on SPP brass, I'd let myself run out of large primers, just so I'd only have to stock a single kind of primer.

I have a second Dillon 550B set-up just for large primer .45 so I cull the sp type until I have enough to sell off or trade for the lp type. After I shoot up a box of Federal sp, I'll have 350+ for trade on lp american made .45 brass.

Where did this information about small primers come from? I have never seen it in writing.

The information that folks have given above? If so then I'm pretty sure it's information that we have learned from person experience and/or just knowing about how much difference the different size primers make combined with known info on loading the .45acp cartridge.
