This may not be the right place, but they are kind of similar.

Yes.  How much hiking and/or backpacking do you do?  I've done quite a bit in the past.  If you're getting out 3-4 times per year, any old tent will probably do fine.  Focus on sleeping comfortably.  Which means a comfy sleeping pad and a roomy, warm sleeping bag.  Even in the summer, you can unzip and lay outside a bag that is too warm, but you can't add layers to a bag that is too cool.  I got caught in high elevations in Wyoming in August a few years ago.  My bag wasn't enough.  Fortunately, we had some spare bags flown in and I was able to double up.  After that, I slept comfortably even when it dipped into the 20's at night.

Back to the tent.  Make sure it is large enough.  If it is rated for two people, assume that it will sleep ONE (plus gear) comfortably.  I like a vestibule so I can leave my gear outside and it still stay dry.  And the door should zip out to the side.  If it falls to the bottom, it will get muddy and dirty in no time.

Come to think of it, there was a thread about this very thing not too long ago.  Had some pretty good info.

What other gear are you thinking of?

I am not really sure. I will probably start off doing 1-2 night over nights. Hikes like that, just to get out in the woods and enjoy myself. I realize that this is an expensive hobby, but for the hikes I plan on going on secondhand gear is all I'll need.
