So Where Are We, AR Market Prices?

At the local barber shop yesterday and a couple of ARs were there that were purchased earlier in the day.  The gang were telling me about the killer deal they had got in buying them both.  I too waded back into AR market last month due to both it was an item on my bucket list plus it was $400 less than just a couple of months back.  I also have seen many other just crazy low AR deals in recent weeks new and used.   What super crazy deals have you seen of late of new or used ARs?

We are just ~18 months removed from the pinnacle of the AR scare, so are we at the bottom of this curve, or we still in free fall?  What will be the catalyst to cause the price to move North, and when will that be.  What say you!

I don't think the market can get any lower than it is right now and there still be profit from manufacturers.  If folks want an AR, now is the time to get one.  Lotta people are gonna be kicking themselves in the butt here soon.

This!

Goes for AKs as well

Ugh, tell me about it.  I've been wanting for so long to get a Yugo underfolder, but I just dropped some serious bank buying a house, moving and upgrades to the old house for tenants.  I can't get away with spending another dime without the wife slapping me around.  I'd dip into the vacation fund, but she's been putting away for the better part of a decade for a Med cruise, and if take from that for a Yugo she will shoot me with it.

My wife watches the money too as we are trying to upgrade to a bigger house.  I have about cleaned out my garage in selling items on ebay to fund my gun hobby.  I don't know what I am going to do when I have nothing else to sell.  I guess I could ask the neighbors if I can mow their yards or something.  Undercut the mowing businesses in the area.  I just hate to weedeat!

I never really saw a terrible increase at my local gun shop. I bought 22 at 9 cents a round when others in Sevierville were $100 a brick. I admit I didn't keep up with it like others. Pmags were $18 when I saw them online for $30-$40 a piece. He bought some from a customer and had to go up a little. His original were around $15 if I remember correctly. He said his customers were family and he wanted to keep them for years. Even his AR and AK/SKS prices stayed about normal. His original stock stayed normal until he sold out and his new stock only reflected his suppliers increase. I was researching the AR I bought from him a couple weeks ago and he was lower than Buds by a little and over $200 lower than the manufacturer MSRP on their website.

I watched several mornings where the same guys came and bought guns and ammo from him to sell at shows. It kinda ticked me off but he had them and had to stay in business. I'm sure if he wouldn't have sold them the guys would have bad mouthed him and cost him business.

Absolutely agree.  Bottom feeder buyers like me, now is the time to go into action.  When top notch new Colt AR can be found in the $800 range new with factory warranty, pricing has not been this good since the 90s.  If you have aluminum cans, pennies stashed, or other means, now is the time to buy.

I'd say your right, there's some deals around if you look for them. Concerning other means, just make sure to keep your clothes on. Just kidding.

Even Helen Keller wouldn't bite if I was in the biz of taking my clothes off!  Not too worry!

I think there are two different markets to look at with regards to AR's; public and private.

I think the public market for AR's is at or about near the bottom for prices.  Simple economics tells us the vendors can't sell them for much lower unless it coincides with liquidating inventory before closing shop.  The price should stay steady for now if external factors are left alone.  AR prices will go up on November 9th, 2016 if a Democrat wins the Presidential election, so keep that in mind if you're debating the best times to buy.

The private market is a different story.  I think those prices will go lower than they are today.  Way too many people bought AR's "just because" during the crisis, at the inflated prices, and the day may come when they will need to sell those AR's, at a loss to pay some bills.  No shame in that at all if the situation requires it. I also expect the costs of private sales to come down, and help out those who will settle for a used AR for cheaper than a commercial vendor has them new if companies raise prices for any reason before the '16 election.

I still check around on Armslist every so often looking for a unicorn, and the ARs are still listing for more than they're worth. Not sure if they're actually selling at those prices or if they're just hoping for a sucker.

I've built several ARs this past year for friends, and have walked them through selecting which parts they want to have on there and it has never been cheaper. Hell, it's cheaper now to get whole and parted ARs on the commercial market than it was to buy a garbage neutered AR15 over 15 years ago. Trust me.... I bought an Oly Arms during the ban in the late 90s. With the deals running nonstop online, it is stupid cheap to buy an entry level AR, or build one with all the bells and whistles. Commercial sales can't possibly get lower.

As far as bubba goes, I think we've seen the end of the great purge. Whatever bubba went and put on his credit card during early 2013 is long been sold. I don't see the civilian market going down with the exception of the occasional desperate seller. I can still build a new rifle for cheaper than 90% of the used ones I've seen listed (which are entry level). The rest which folks have kitted out with expensive to fast items are a different story. There are probably a lot of good deals on those types of rifles, since they're having to compete in a market where many buyers just want a basic AR, and may be willing to pony up a few extra dollars for gimmick gadgets, but not break the bank.

As for the elections, you'll see those prices start to climb well before November '16, especially if the Hillary is looking like she might win. I'm surprised we haven't seen a slow rise right now so close to midterm, but I'm sure there will be a run in November, then a huge spike in January if the Dems take the House. If not, folks may enjoy another year and a half of these low prices on ARs/AKs and standard capacity mags.

My suggestion to everyone I talk to who wants an AR but can't afford one is to buy up several lowers. They'll be grandfathered, most likely, if there is a ban, which means you can hang on to it and build it later. It's what I've been doing, but they keep turning into rifles. It'll be nice to have later on down the road so my kids can still get their own ARs. Plus, if you get a stack of lowers, they will skyrocket in value later if a ban goes into effect. Don't know how much a pre ban lower goes for in California, but I know they ain't cheap.
