I just saw that WW2 tank movie today. Very nicely done, but it isn't your typical John Wayne war epic.

P.S. Just to show you how far we've gone back to knuckle-dragging intellect, they put up onscreen the reminder to turn off your phone FIVE DANGED TIMES.

Yep. Went last night. Lots of reminders, it's almost ridiculous.

My take

[spoiler] It was a great story, incredible battles, characters that were much deeper than anticipated. Much more graphic film than I'd anticipated: blood, injuries, just incredible. I'm still processing it almost 24 hrs later. Excessive use of the word F***, but that was probably accurate based on my friend who is a tanker. His response to the film was also that it had some of the best depicitons ever of historical tank battle and strategy. I can't comment on that, but it was visually awesome.[/spoiler]

When I went Friday Night, went with a group of friends, one was a Tanker in 80s-90s there about.

When the movie ended it was the quietest I have ever seen a movie theater exit.  No one was talking.  More of a Stunned silence.  Yes, I was processing for a while myself.

BTW Cj0e I will have to figure out how you did that show spoiler.  I like that and agreed.

Agreement on the quiet exit. Everyone was stunned.

Spoiler is in the special BBcode dropdown. or just add the spoiler tag. ["spoiler] yer spoiler here ["/spoiler"] - remove the quotation marks! they're there so you can see how the formatting goes.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie. I think Brad Pitt is a great actor and have enjoyed many of his movies. I think Hollywood tolerates him because he can still bust the box office at movie theaters. He is very Pro Gun and very out spoken when ask about it.

Here's a link to an interview with him.

Looks like a movie worth seeing on the big screen. Hopefully I'll get to see it in a few days so I don't have to wait for the DVD.

On a side note. I've only seen previews, of course, but eveytime I hear Brad Pitt talk in the preview I keep picturing his "killin' Nazi" speech from "Inglourious Basterds".

Yeah I don't see many flicks on big screen anymore, but going to see Fury tomorrow with one of my Usual Suspects.

As soon as the shooting started I wished I had brought my muffs.  Even the rifle reports sounded like they were inches from my ear.

My nefew is big into war history, especially WW2 and has seen it twice so i'll probably go see it with him this week.

They should remove the gunbuster sign and replace it with a phonebuster sign. What would be the legality of a theater jamming cell phones?

Highly illegal, thats messing with the FCC there, they dont like that kinda thing.

+1. Some theaters across the country actually tried that a few years ago. It didn't last long. My local theater, which has finally gone digital, will actually stop the movie & put a "turn off you cell phones" message on the screen for 30 seconds if they see someone using one during the movie. If that doesn't work they come in & escort the cell phone user out of the theater. I've seen them do both at least once.

Next the person will sue for something along the lines they got publicly shamed and their feelings are hurt.

That is what voice mail is for on phones. Just turn the damn thing off and go watch the movie. Get your messages after you leave the theater. Unless they have a metal detector or are paddling folks as they come in I will be breaking the law while watching the movie should I decide to go and not wait for it to come out and buy it on DVD...................jmho

went and saw it this afternoon.  Certainly won't contend for an Oscar but it was very entertaining.  Lots of good battle scenes.

Pitt's character is pretty ruthless.  He seemed very believable in his part.   It really felt like you were inside the tank with them.

Just got back, very very good but not great.

Fantastic battle scenes and epic reenactments of mass troop and civilian movement, etc. Excellent CGI in that you can't generally tell which effects are and which aren't, although of course most all the tracer round stuff is.

Weak part was character development I felt which didn't exactly justify especially one long interlude in middle with two German women in their home. Newbie gets battle hardened, turns from wuss to uber brave killer, and Walking Dead's Jon Berthal brute asshole character admits admiration of the newb as a "good man", that's about it as far as catharsis. Movie certainly could have lost 20 min or so without affecting focus or intents IMHO.

It's gonna seem only somewhat above average if not seen on big screen methinks. Audio was nifty with all the peripheral sound of constant warfare and whatnot in distance, but seemed main foreground sound with dialog had to often overly compete with it, often seemed loud enough but muffled, but that could just be theater's fault.

All in all, whiz bang battle scene extravaganza, near as I could tell quite authentic with all the equipment and arms, must have been cause I saw it with Mike.357 and he didn't shriek about any of it. :) :)

(Saw brief interview with Pitt about it a week ago, and they had actually met with some WWII tankers still alive to help with authenticity, more than one of them who saw final film gave it a thumbs up for that, and Pitt said that was highest compliment of all.)

Oh, and btw if you didn't catch it, Pitt said also in another recent interview he owns guns, grew up with guns,  ready to defend himself in home with gun, etc. Since this is of course out of the norm for a Hollywood biggie, you didn't see that play in the news except on FOX. ;)
