Lone Wolf barrel in Glock 17

Recommended Posts

Do any of you guys use a Lone Wolf barrel in your Glocks to prevent the Glocks from deforming the brass ?

I am now reloading 9mm  and wonder if it would be worth it to purchase a Lone Wolf barrel . I haven't looked at my 9mm brass from my Glock since I have been reloading to see if it is really that bulged at the bottom.

 Any thoughts ?

the bulged is from the 40 s&w glock factory barrels.  never seen any with the glock 9 mm and/or 45 acp.  i used aftermarket barrels in all my glocks when i shoot cast lead reloads.  i have barrels from kkm, efk, lw and bar sto.  they all work, but i put the lw on the bottem of my list.  the 40 s&w brass bulged is from the factory barrel because the factory barrels do not give/have full case support.  aftermarket barrels have better case support and has less case bulged.  they say it is not good to shoot cast lead in glock factory barrels because of the type of rifling inside the glock barrel.   but there are many that do without any problems.  i don't do it and i use after market barrels for all of my reloads.

The unsupported chamber was why I was asking. I dont rememeber seein that much buldge at all but that was before I started reloading and knew what to look for . I may just get me a barrel . I had a Lone Wolf 40-9 conversion barrel for my G22 and it was great . What problems did you have that put Lone Wolf on the bottom of your list ?

with lw barrels and lw conversion barrel i had no problems with factory ammo.  had problems with some reloads not letting the gun go into full battery.  no problems with my reloads with factory or other aftermarket barrels. i called lw and they told me that their barrels were for factory ammo only.  not for reloads.  they told me to run several boxes of +p factory ammo to open up the chamber some and/or i could send the barrel to them to have the chamber open up for a large fee.  so that is why i like kkm, efk, and bar sto barrels better.  i know they will shoot what i load in them.

I've not seen this problem yet in my G17, G34, or G30.(all Gen4) and none of these have bulged the brass but it was the first trip through a glock that I know of.   I have a G22 (Gen3)  that I've shot reloads in but I don't recall if it created a bulge or not since I don't shoot the G22 that often.

I have been reloading 9mm for a few years now and I have never noticed any problems with my brass. As stated above, most of the trouble associated with reloading Glock brass occurs with the .40s. Unless you intend to shoot lead bullets from your G17, I would not see the necessity for an aftermarket barrel.

I've been handloading 9mm (and of course other calibers) for a long time now. I do have Lone Wolf barrels for my 17 & 19, but only purchased and used them when I was loading lead 147 gr bullets.

We now cast and PC and I loaded approximately 14,000 rounds of 9mm in 2014. No issues whatsoever with the brass out of factory barrels. And we use a lot of range pickup brass...

No should be GTG with your plan.

fwiw the Lone Wolf barrels have significantly closer tolerances than OEM Glock barrels and can be really finicky about what they feed...you really have to tailor the round to the barrel. I use a "U" die, or undersize die, when loading for my LW barrels, and you have to make sure the OAL works for the bullet you are using in LW barrels...it took me some "tweaking around" to come up with a reliable combo for my 147 lead bullets and the LW barrels.

From my experience the LW barrels are also very particular about which Self defense rounds they will feed as well...mine will not feed 147 gr factory rounds like Golden Saber. YMMV.

Ok great , so good ole FMJ round nose 9mm bullets will do fine in the factory barrel and the brass will be good to reload afterwards ?

You will most likely get wore out primer pockets before case swells weaken the brass with 9mm. My 2nd gen 17 has about as weak case support as a newer Glock in 40S&W. I still don't worry with it.

I had heard that LW would do that no charge if asked, I have never had a problem with reloads in the .40-9 conversion, ymmv.

Anyone else shoot reloads in a Lone Wolf barrel in their Glock ? Are they functioning good and cycling the slide and feeding good ?  I have a G17 and a G22 . Now I think I am wanting to get the 9-40 conversion barrel and use it in my G22 to shoot my reloads and just to have an "extra" 9mm handgun with the change of a barrel .

I have reloaded 9mm, 40 S&W and 10mm in modern Glocks and never had a problem with the brass unless I reloaded to +P+ type loads in 40 S&W and 10mm.

I may just take out my barrels and look at their support. I have a 24 yr old Glock 17 and a 21 year old G21 . I have heard that the newer Glock barrels have more support than the older ones. I may just shoot the reloads in the newer ones and leave my older ones to factory ammo.

the case support problem is with the 40 s&w factory barrels in all glock 40's guns.  there might be the same problem with the 10mm, but,,,but,,, i have not seen it or heard of it.  the other glocks calibers do not have the problem.  they have the correct amount of case support.  so with your 9mm and your 45 acp you do not have a case support problem.   they say do not shoot case lead in glock factory barrels because of the type of rifling glock uses.  some people do anyway, i do not.   kkm, efk and others make their barrels to shoot reloads.  yes they cost more than other brands, but you get what you pay for, and they shoot everything.   as for the lw barrel that i have they do not work well with reloads.   i got them used and cheap.

Here's a .45acp round in my Glock 30 Gen 2.5 . There is a lot of unsupported case that is exposed. I know that .45acp doesn't have as much pressure as the .40S&W but I have more case support in my Glock 22 than this Glock 30 . You think shooting reloads in this is ok ?

I ran thousands of rounds of fmj handloads through a G 21 I had...and not a few LRN rounds as well.

Of course I blew it up with a double charged load of W 231...but that's another story...

Other than the "explosive" charge load I usually ran them at 800 + fps (in 45 acp) without issues my friend.
