Planning to Relocate From Western NY

Recommended Posts

Been an occasional visitor to the site for over a year, but it is looking more promising that we will actually move.  We spent a week or so in TN in the Spring of last year just looking around.  After lots of research TN is now at the top of our short list of where we would like to move.  We spent another week in the Tri City area in February, the week before you guys got hit with all the snow. Had a realtor  this time who drove us all over looking at houses for 4 days and we did some additional looking on our own a couple of more days.  Even checked out a gun store we were driving by.  Was interesting when I told the fellow behind the counter I was checking out gun shops if we relocated.  He asked where I lived and I told him NY and he said "Welcome to America".

Anyway I think we are sold on Eastern TN now we just have to find the right house. The realtor adjust his search criteria a little when I told him a big plus would be room for a small range. We are planning another trip down in April/May.

Hopefully you will welcome (or at least tolerate) a conservative that wants out of the Socialist Republic of NY. We hope to be moved before another Winter comes.  I know you have had a rough Winter but it would be a welcome change compared to Winter 2 miles South of Lake Ontario.

Welcome comrade. :hat:  I escaped the Republic 6 years ago.  I've lived in 7 states & this is the best move yet.

Where did you escape from? We are really looking forward to our next house hunting trip. Our friends are starting to believe we are serious. Figure just the taxes I will be saving will pay more than 6 months of mortgage payments, another month or so in saved heating bills.

Kinderhook (Columbia County) just south of Albany.  My annual property tax here would be a monthly payment in NY. :stare:

We are down from NY house hunting in the Tri-City area this week.  Today was the crap or get off the pot day, we put in an offer on a house south of Jonesborough and it was accepted. We have a pre approval letter from the bank and sign the final contracts tomorrow. Closing end of May.  Now PANIC is setting in. I have 45 years of crap to get rid of or move 735 miles.

Great house but I will be looking for builders to build an out building for me for some of my overflow collection and some modifications to the house.  Anyone on here in the general area that know any good builders/remodelers?

I will start a proper thread in General later but wanted to bring this thread upto date on the progress.

While your personal comfort is important, the part I quoted out of your post means the most to me. The last thing I'd want is the communist mindset of most people from that area migrating south even an inch!!!

Welcome to you however, Edited by Randall53

You are not the only one looking at moving.  I am less then 3 weeks from going down to look at housing myself.  Maryland is almost as bad as Eastern New York but I understand that Western New York isn't as bad.  Either way there seems to be a lot of us header down south.

Thanks

Robert

Welcome from a transplant to East Tennessee from the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia. Congrats on a return to real life. East Tennessee is the original "God's Country." If you like good Italian food, try Carraba's in Johnson City.

Probably the last update for this thread. I will start a new one in General for all my questions in a week or so. We pulled into our new place outside Jonesborough this morning about 10:30am. We are now living with 2 lawn chairs and a new bed that was delivered this afternoon. The rest of the household stuff along with another load from my shop show up on Saturday. We plan to get our TN drivers licenses and auto plates tomorrow then open a bank account, then we will be official.

No.... do NOT move from NY to Tennessee. You will not fit in. The people here freakin' WAVE to you as you drive by them.... and they use their entire hand... not just one finger!  They also call you "sir" or "maam" until they get to like you.... then they call you "Bud".  (which is an honor!)  If you DO choose to come to TN, you should leave the NY/CT/NJ attitude up there. Why? because down here... someone will slap that attitude right out of you.  ROFL

From a recent transplant from Konnecitcut.  I moved my conservative butt down here last year, and haven't looked back once. The folks down here are down to earth, real people.  Yes, they have their Aholes... just like yankees do.... but there are far fewer of them than we have in the new England states.  Get down here and live your lives. You're gonna love this place!

Welcome to the South. Yes "The South" is a place. We love all like minded visitors/transplants. Just a warning, you will be a visitor for at least 10 years. By then, you will have learned how to fry green tomatoes and potatoes, make/grow yellow squash and say y'all. Then you will have earned your citizenship. Welcome.

Thanks for all the encouragement. We actually moved in to our TN house on June 25th and stayed a whole week before we were off to Ohio for a pre planned trip (famiy/car show) that we do every year. We will be back to continue unpacking and settling in soon. We have met a couple of our neighbors and several business owners/employees and all have been great in helping us get settled in. Now if I could just get the rest of my shop moved down and sell the NY house I would be done with that place.

As a Maryland who moved to the Chattanooga area just last month I can tell you for the most part the people are pretty friendly.  Just have to get use to the fact that they talk allot quieter then they do up north.

Thanks
