Can't do it

Recommended Posts

So I work in the IT department at Vanderbilt medical and its a great awesome job and I love it,

But I just got a ticket for a computer at the hospital on the 3rd floor, not sure where at first so I ask someone and they tell me it's an OR

and they are about to bring a patient in there at the same time and I know it's my job to fix this stuff but I just don't feel comfortable going into an active OR to fix a computer

Would anyone else be able to do it? Or am I alone in this, just wondering if any of you could do it

Some ORs have a sealed off admin area which is not a sterile area and I am sure they will take protective measures if it's in the actual operation area.   Is the computer something they need for the procedure?

Do your job, that patient's medical team is probably counting on the system to be up and running. Working IT at a medical center, this type of trouble ticket shouldn't be a total shock.

If you still are having issues with it, you may need a new job. What if they needed help while a guy was in surgery? Edited by btq96r

Put on big boy pants and go do your job.  I doubt they are you going to ask you to hold guts out of the way.

I never understood squeamishness.

I'd have phrased it differently and all the facts aren't in jet but the bottom line is just do your job. On the flip side the OO staf aren't going to put you in a steril environment without proper preparation. As the sneaker commercial says just do it.

Hey man next time this comes up shoot me a PM. Did they give you scrub access so you could enter the OR? It's not half as scary as it seems at first, most of the computers are mounted on the outside wall.

OR procedure when you aren't entering the sterile field is pretty simple, most is common sense.

Change into VUMC issued scrubs, upon entry to the OR corridors don a face mask and hat from the shelves next to the doors(I prefer the surgeons caps), right before entering the assigned OR room use the hands sanitizer next to the door or avagard(purple foot pump) at the scrub station. After entering the room don the simple blue gloves typically on the wall next to the door. Your now ready for non-sterile work in the OR, and if you have questions just ask for the circulator.(should be dressed similar to you at this point)

Wow, you guys are brutal.

As a lad I worked at a from hoof to steak Butcher shop, so if it's about queasiness, yes I could.

If that is your concern, it's not a Civil War operating theater with gallons of blood and limbs on the floor, you'd probably be surprised how little gore there is and I'm guessing you wouldn't be over the docs shoulder looking at what he or she was doing anyway.

If it's about intruding into an environment when your presence may distract the medical team, that's a communication issue between IT and surgical services.

Just watch out for bloody ceiling drippings and you should be okay. Unless you get sweaty and your face shield starts to droop.

Of and the smell, oh gag me the smells is what I cant handle.  All the irony putrid blood and singed hair.

IF you can a little vapo rub under your nostrils will keep it from seizing to your nose hairs.

Cool. I know a guy named Harold who does the same thing. Probably in a different area though. You know him?

My wife works in the H.I.M. department.
