Remington 783

I have the chance to pick up, on the cheap, a Remmy 783 in .308. Does anybody have any comments (good or bad) about this rifle? I have seen alot of reviews from gun rags but their opinions are bought (IMO). Just looking for honest feedback. Thanks.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago on sale at Academy for $279 in 30-06.  I put a cheap Barska scope on it and it's shooting under .75" @ 100 yards off of bags using Silver Tips 155gr. I'm happy with it.

Found a post from a while back from Dolomite_supafly about the 783 that has some interesting information about how they are like the Savage rifles:

And finally, the Savage barrel nut makes so much sense that Remington has finally embraced it. Their new 783 is a Savage with the Remington name. The 783 is identical, as far as design goes, to a Savage. No more of a ringing endorsement that to have your competitor copy your design. So why not just get a 783 then? Because there is ZERO aftermarket support for it right now but I suspect once Remington guys realize the advantages of have a easily swappable barrel and bolt face they too will embrace the barrel nut.

I went and looked at it last night...took some snap caps to test the feeding as I've read about mag feed issues....yup this one would not feed for squat. Kept jamming the second round or riding over it...kinda like a finicky AK. Seems the guy was just trying to unload a lemon....I did have high hopes for it being a Remmy....will have to look closer at the Savage line.

$279 for an .06? Wow This guy wanted $350 for a .308 used.....glad I passed it up. Thanks for the input gentlemen, I do appreciate the wealth of brain power here. Now to hunt down a new deer rifle.....
