Essentially a deal is in the works to broaden the "sporting purposes" test, giving the BATFE some much needed cover tor their conflicting rulings on pistol grip shotguns, etc. The NRA gets some credit for the deal, but the antis get further restrictions on ammo imports.

 

IMO, time to write some letters and stuff. My rights have nothing to do with sporting purposes.

None of that makes much sense to me. The ATF gave exemption to pistol gripped shotguns long ago, as legal "firearms". Even short barreled ones are either AOW or SBS, depending on how they were originally and/or later configured.

 

I don't see how DD even enters any of this discussion at all, really, since a sporting exception was given long ago to take all shotshell firing firearms out of DD category. Which was later extended to cover rifled barrels firing slugs also.

 

I sense there is a twisted up "partial story" herein, if indeed there is one at all.

IIRC, the ATF "granted" an exception in one of their infamous letters, THEN reversed the exemption in another letter*; creating millions of instant felons in the process. The "etc." above includes contradictory letters on the Ares Armor 80% lower that wasn't, the Heller exemption for gun trusts that now isn't, and other such contradictions.

EDIT * Actually, by defining a pistol grip shotgun as "Not a shotgun" under the NFA, the ATF eliminated the exception under "destructive devices."
