Nikon P-300 blk scope

Recommended Posts

Just saw this scope and am wondering if any of you guys have one or have tried them out. They get a pretty good review on TTAG but I've never used a BDC reticle.

I have one on my 16" 300 Blk, its not a bad scope for the price but not in love with the reticle.  I thought it would be less intrusive but those little circles are a bit distracting to me.  Much better to have a simple mildot type reticle which you can calibrate to the 300 Blk.  On the upside, you can pick out those circles quite well and rather quickly, if you know your targets range you can usually put it right in the bulls eye with little effort.

The BDC is over rated IMHO, while its great if you shoot the same exact round combo (if you reload) or same commercial round, but its harder to switch from light to heavy rounds at the range or in the field.  The BDC only has a few reference points, (4 I think) so a 110 grain bullet will not line up if you have the BDC ranged for say a 120 grain or heavier bullet.  With more reference lines, its possible to get closer to a reference line with each weight so without changing settings on the turret.  While some shooters mess with their turrets to get on the bull, I seldom change settings, I instead use hold over (Kentucky windage) to get on target, but that's just me.  I zero at 100 (hunting) or 36/50 yards (HD) and hold over if my target is at a different distance.

I'm a Nikon whore.
I have a prostaff on my .358 Winchester single shot, it's for .223 but the BDC reticle is working perfectly for me so far.
I have a P223 on my CZ527 and its a tack driver. I love Nikons target turrets. They repeat well.
I have an M223 with side focus on my AR and I have a P308 on my FNAR.

You cannot go wrong with Nikon. It's my personal opinion that Nikon makes the best scope on the market for the money. Hands down. leupolds in the same price bracket suck. Friction adjustments on most of them. Not very good quality. Don't get me wrong, Leupolds makes some of the best scopes money can buy and I'll not attempt to take that away but you have to sell a kidney and three pints of plasma to pay for them.

I have not had the need for the particular model you're asking about but I love all my other Nikons and cannot imagine the one you're looking at won't serve you well.

They have a great ballistic program available on line to calculate drop rates in relation to the reticle for your particular load and scope model. Edited by Caster

What about the P series mounts? I don't plan to take the scope on and off so I won't need QD. They seem like they'd be pretty sturdy and allow for good placement. Not sure how the eye relief is going to work on an AR as it will be my first magnified optic.

I have a spare if you are interested. Bought it from a buddy selling his AR and you are welcome to it for considerably cheaper than they can be bought. I'm running the same mount on my coyote gun with the P223 and it's perfect for me. Stock all the way out, then one click in and eye relief is golden for me.

I think I'm leaning more towards a 2-7 now rather than a 1-4. Decisions decisions.

Does yours match up pretty well with the marks?

My choice would be the 2-7.

The software allows you to pre-determine the range where each mark zeros based on the load and range you are shooting.  I print a range card for each load and distance I want to shoot.  Download the android app and play with it.  You will see what I mean.

That mount is great, and if you can get it cheaper even better.  I have mine on a Millet scope mount I found at walmart.  The AR has very light recoil so that mount is sturdy enough, my buddy has the P series mount, his came with the scope, mine didn't so went the cheaper route.

I looked at this software when I got mine, but you had to pay for it then, is it free now?  I use Strelok + to do mine, its very good and can be used with any of my scopes.

Yeah they charge $4.99 for it on the iPhone but I'm sure it's worth it. Gonna see if I can get a good deal on the scope from eBay now.  :usa:

Dang, So many great comment's already, not really much left for me to add. I have over 4000 rounds under my 3 P-300 BLK scope's with not one hitch. Everything from 125 gr super sonic rounds to 220 gr sub-sonics that needed Spot On and the super-sub reticle to dial in pigs at 150 yards. Big fun all the way around! If you have any question's drop me a note.

Yeah I'll buy the phone app. That will be handy to have away from the house.
