New Job!!!!

Recommended Posts

That's awesome.  The state doesn't lavish folks with big salaries, but the retirement is awesome.  Hopefully, you'll be able to spend some time in the Smokies.

My dad was a forestry type, which is why I was born in Asheville, NC.

The foresters back then had to be very careful in the NC mountains due to the moon shiners, who weren't known for warm reception to folks that happened by their stills.

Congrats! So what will a typical day involve?

Thats a good question.  It will involve much more data analysis and GIS mapping work than field work.  I will be managing the program for all state forests. So all timber harvesting and inventory data, as well as training any foresters on new technologies.  I'll also help facilitate the sale of timber off the state lands.  The state owns 170,000 acres quantified as "State Forest".  This does not include "Parks" which do not harvest timber.  State Forests are listed in state code to be "demonstration areas" for the public to see how good forest management is performed, as well as generate revenue, and provide recreation.  I'll be jockeying a desk for a majority of the time, which is ok with me.  The older I get the harder it is to maintain a hard outdoor pace that field forestry requires.  And after the heat of the last few weeks, I'll enjoy some AC

Congrats to you, the forestry departments a bit political but if you recognize that on the front end and understand how to work the system its all good. TN State Government jobs fall under the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS) and its not bad at all. Look into the offered deferred compensation programs offered to you, they're a variant of a 401k, if your young enough use them.
