Ruger AR 556

On first impression, how would you say it compares to a M&P Sport?

Superior.  1/8 barrel (like Sports used to have) with a nice, thin hand guard.  It has a dust cover and forward assist  The front sight block does look a little goofy but I believe it is milled and has serrations to cut down on glare.  There is a QD mount to attach a front sling swivel.

The rear sight is a Magpul knock-off but there is only one aperture (small) and it flips up with a button on the left side rather than the dual "paddles" of the Magpul.

If I was looking for my first it would be the one.

My overall impression also, especially being overall a Ruger rooter.

I'm a Ruger fan too. I've got a buddy torn between the 2. I can't get him to let me help him build one instead. It's good to have additional input to relay to him.

Sounds like a lot more features for the money. I'm glad I asked.

Took a newbie shooting Friday. He now has the bug for an AR. The Ruger was one I showed him. It is pretty impressive for a starter model.

That's pretty much what I did yesterday, except my buddy initiated with interest in an AR.  Went looking around after shooting and found several of the Ruger's, which I kinda had already recommended, primarily because I'm cheap.  He's not really interested in building, just buying one off the rack.

Did a little more research this afternoon and the only negative I can see is the hand guard has no heat shield.  It has a very slim profile so I don't know how hot it would get.

That's a good question on the hand guard. I really didn't notice that when we were looking

Joey first went totally bonkers over the 10/22 I got from Dolomite. LOL like to never got it out of his hands.

Then he got hold of my Colt and that was the end of my shooting for the day. I was busy loading mags for him.

I checked one out the other day.  It looks far superior to the M&P Sport.  Almost bought it, but I'm holding off until I can find a Colt LE6920 MP-B in solid black.  This seems to be difficult to find right now unless you pay close to $1,100 (tan accented models can be had for about $830).  Considering just picking up the naked model and buying the furniture package.  It may cost about $50 extra that way.  Also considering the model with the reaper camo if I can't pull the black model together.
