Gun sales up again in August.

Newly released August records show that the FBI posted 1.7 million background checks required of gun purchasers at federally licensed dealers, the highest number recorded in any August since gun checks began in 1998

Me thinks it has more to do with just gun control talk. Maybe some are due to the hostile and increasingly dangerous environment we are living in today. 1.7 million in one month, people are just preparing for the near future which doesn't look too fruitful and safe.

Ordinarily I would agree that the root cause is all the talk about more gun control. But this time is different.

I don't think I've ever seen this country rolled up in a ball as bad as it is right now. Our criminal justice system is coming apart at the seams, inner city riots are the order of the day, Our President, aided by his Attorney General, the Director of the FBI, and the Mayor of New York have succeeded in convincing the criminal element that the cops have no backing, race relations have taken their hardest hit in decades, cops are being slaughtered all over the country and mass murders are rearing their ugly heads again, the most prominent candidate for President in one of our political parties is being openly considered an irresponsible liar and mistrusted by both parties, we're entering into a deal with an enemy nation that half of the politicians in the country denounce as being suicidal - all at a time when our military is being downsized, and worst of all the rule of law is seen as being incinerated on the altar of prosecutorial discretion at the Presidential level............and on and on and on.

I think this country is worried, really worried, and it's showing up in gun sales.

Bingo. What I carry is considered a full size duty handgun, in the past I have considered downsizing for convenience and comfort of carry but especially in the last year i've decided to keep carrying what I have with the best ammo I can load it with. I know it and shoot better with it than any other handgun I have and even though many say I don't need that caliber to do the job, as far as handguns and handgun ammo goes, there's no argument that .45 "WONT" get the job done. With the environment today I would sling my MAK90 over my shoulder and carry 2 extra 30 round mags if I could without getting shot myself by someone freaking out thinking I was about to go on an active shooting spree. I would put it behind my truck seat but i'm paranoid that it would get stolen. There will likely come a time when i'll just avoid certain places all together because it's going to just get worse, I certainly don't see it getting better.

Also, I personally know a staunch liberal who recently got their carry permit. Now i'm sure people are getting worried. Good for them though, they did a smart thing. Now if I could just make them see that who they are voting for all these years are responsible for the hostile environment we have today.

Absolutely. If someone asked me why I carry a big, full sized pistol I'd tell them "because I can't find a holster for an AR 15, that's why." Ditto on the rifle behind the seat too. I'd do it if I could figure a way to keep it from being stolen. I don't think a person who sees storm clouds on our national horizon is being pessimistic, just realistic. IMHO.

I have so many new guns I want like a new carry gun, an AR in .308 ect. but I also wouldn't mind a new shotgun, a Versamax with a short barrel and mag extension with some kind of red dot sight and a mounted light of course, for home defense. Then I would take my 870 with the 18" barrel, replace the stock with a pistol grip and mount a red dot and have that as a truck gun. Loaded with slugs for a little more range than buck.

I decided to take the risk of theft about a year ago and stashed a basic ~ $600 AR pistol in a tennis racquet case behind the seat. Would hurt if stolen of course, but the secure feeling it gives me for accurate rifle caliber firepower to 100 yards or better is worth that level of risk to me.

You can of course make that (or a rifle) for even less currently -- I chose pistol cause I can legally carry on person if situation should dictate.

Does High Point make a (reliable) .223 carbine? At least if it was stolen it wouldn't hurt as bad as a nice AR. Maybe that's a market in itself, a carbine designed just for the truck or trunk. Inexpensive, decent sights, short and reliable.

Nope, just checked. No High Point .223

No. They don't even make an (un)reliable one. ;)

Since you can slap one together yourself for around $450 by just buying complete uppers and lowers, I don't see how anyone could much undercut that market. Plus, you maintain AR architecture for mix n match, unlike with a proprietary design.

My nephew is going to build an AR soon, i'm going to help him out since i've never built one myself. Good learning experience.

Hell, you don't have to build one, ya know. Watch the sales at PSA and you can get a decent complete lower and upper and stick them together. For less than the price of a used Glock.

Just glanced there, complete mid length upper 289.99, complete blem lower 129.99, under $420.

Throw an inexpensive rear sight on, shipping + FFL transfer, still well under 5 bills for a serviceable AR, and ain't gonna break your heart or wallet as bad if the worst happens to it like it would your custom pieced together higher end tacticool EOTWAWKI rifle. :)

Uppers are free shipping right now, sometimes lowers are too, don't have to get them at same time though, and you can even beat this price.

I do want an AR, probably would already have one if I didn't have an AK. The .223 makes sense for a truck/trunk gun but for SHTF gun i've been checking out vids and reviews of the Ruger SR 7.62. My motivation for .308/7.62 with a quality optic is, you are well defended and you also have a good big game hunting rifle rolled into one. Read a lot of positives about the Ruger but it's pricey and maybe too much gun for vehicle carry. Crap, I don't have even 1 AR yet and now i'm wanting 2. It would also be nice to find a complete AR in .223 through private sale for a few bills.

How about this? I could probably talk my brother into selling me his SKS for $250 to $300. Change out the stock maybe/definatly to polymer with adjustable stock, it's already the shorter/carbine model and for some strange reason i've collected several SKS replacement mags, 20 and 30 round over the years. I know the gun, it's reliable and also has a cheapo Norinco scope which is zero'd in pretty well. SKS behind the seat?

Buying a used auto rifle is OK if you know the rifle/seller and can be sure the gun hasn't had the snot shot out of it. But some guys judge their auto rifles by how well they continue to shoot after the barrel is red hot, and that shoots out a lot of barrels. I would never buy one without seeing visible evidence of little firing or knowing the rifle/seller as I said above. It's kind of like buying a racing engine with only an external examination. Caveat Emptor in spades with these guns, especially since you're talking about a defensive piece. IMHO.

I agree, I know it's not always an easy thing to do but like test driving a car I would hope to test fire a firearm. But sometimes you just can't do that in a shopping mall parking lot. If it's an inexpensive vehicle gun I would shoot it just enough to know its reliability and accuracy then it wouldn't get fired too much after that probably, just enough now and then to make sure it still works. The old M16A1's we had back at Ft. Stewart in the early 80s had the crap shot out of them, all the I was issued was soo loose and rattley I didn't need the extra firing pin to push out the take down pins, I could push them out with my finger enough to grab them from the other side. They shot fine though.

In all honesty gun sales skyrocketed on November 8th 2008 and at times may have flat lined a little but I don't think they have declined since then and have had large increases at others. First gun show I went to after the election in 2008 was in January 09 and they had a big picture of Obama with a sign under it reading "Gun Salesman of the Year" and that was only 3 months after the election............jmho

You can do that with most new ones these days, btw, Not because they're over loose, just more precision machined.

Certainly an option, But I thought you wanted real rifle power in the car.

Referencing your first question regarding relative loss risk, you can buy a Hi-Point .45 carbine cheaper than the Mec Tec conversion alone, not to mention plus the cost of the Glock itself. AR of course can be too, but not as cheap as the Hi-Point.

I just saw that vid and thought it was cool looking. BUT, I did read about a couple of .45 carbines in Gun Test magazine some time ago, both were AR look alikes. One had too many failures to continue the test, the other functioned well, one short cycle but that could be a bad ammo charge. They tested 230 hardball and Hornaday 220 +p Critical Defense. The hardball was getting around 900+fps muzzle velocity and the CD was getting close to 1200 fps muzzle velocity from a 16" barrel. I believe the carbine will improve the performance quite a bit from a handgun round especially if you can shoot quality +p hollow points. Also with a good stock and sight it has to be more controllable and accurate, also 30 round mags are a plus. A lot of LE and military still use sub carbines, they should be a big improvement to a handgun.

Anyway I would prefer something in .223 or 7.62 x 39.

I don't think this has anything to do with any proposed gun control and more to do with the shooting at the church in Charleston, The Chattanooga shooting, and The Baltimore Riots.  All these added together to make people more jittery I know I am.  Those of with MANY guns sitting in our safes wont run out and buy a handgun but someone who doesn't have any might think it is a good time to go buy one.  Many of those people will stick it in some kind of safe and never shot it but some will go to a range and learn how to shot it and some of those people will get hooked and buy more.  No mater what people having guns available to use is not a bad thing.

Thanks

One thing increased gun sales do is send a message to anti-gunners that they are loosing support in their battle to take away our rights.
