Pros: Size, weight, ammo capacity, caliber, supported chamber, lifetime warranty, American made!
Cons: Spare mags and other accessories are still hard to come by

I was introduced to the new Smith & Wesson M&P series of automatic handguns when my wife and I visited a local gun store a month or so ago. The gun store was having a sale that weekend and the Smith & Wesson factory rep was on site doing some promotions with their firearms.

While I wasn't actively looking for a new gun, I was window shopping for another Glock 23 to replace the one that I had sold earlier in the year. When the Smith & Wesson rep saw me looking at the Glock, he asked if I would consider the new M&P 40c as an alternative. I approached that offer with quite a bit of hesitation, but after holding the M&P 40c for a few minutes and really evaluating all that it had to offer, the Glock was a distant memory.

I absolutely love this little gun. It's smaller than a Glock 23 but larger than the Glock 27. It carries 10+1 rounds of potent .40SW ammunition and has three different sizes of backstraps to adjust the grip of the gun to fit the shooter's hand and preference.

Solid stainless steel slide and barrel, steel reinforced polymer frame, lifetime warranty and it is made here in the United States.

It is easily the best concealed carry handgun that I have ever owned. I carry mine daily and often forget that it's on me because of how light and perfectly sized it is. But it packs a serious punch when you pull the trigger, and accuracy at the range has proven to be incredibly good. Recoil is very manageable even with the .40SW cartridge.

If you're looking for a good .40SW concealed carry gun, look no further.

Pros: S&W cocking serrations, pleasant recoil for a compact .40 caliber semi-auto, takedown procedure ensuring an empty chamber and Melonite finish.
Cons: Smooth trigger face, weak gripping surface, slide was rather wide and factory sights were distracting.

Although I detest the Glock 27, I would rather carry one for CCW than the M&P 40c. It was pleasant shooting and recoil was more tolerable than the Glock 27. It was nearly impossible to shoot without the pinky extension. The grip and backstrap stippling was weak and I had a real hard time holding on after multiple shot strings. And lastly the smooth trigger was hard to keep my finger from slipping off. Other than the lack of holsters available and the 3-dot sight (I wound up blacking out the rear sight), I just didn't see any advantage of the M&P over the Glock.

I traded it in after about a week and a half. I'm probably going to buy a G27.
