Well, the collection is growing, and I needed some secure storage. Probably over-did the research -trying to make the best rationalization possible due to my general unwillingness to part with my money.
In the end, the Browning was worth it. Best bang-for-the-buck. The safe I got (Bass Pro Shop in Nashville, they had 13 of them, so if you want one, they got 'em) is essentially a version of Browning/ProSteel's "Bronze Series." It is a special edition due to the brown color, the John M Browning signature graphic, and the cool shotgun shell-shaped 3-spoke handle.
It is a 12/24 model (with a convertible, flexible interior), weighs in at a mere 530 lbs and has a dozen locking bolts all around. 60"x30"x23". S&G series II lock spins smooth, has a four number combo, and is very secure. Has a key lock built in to lock the bolts open or closed if you are doing lots of moving stuff in/out. It also has a port for running a dehumidifier wire, as well as two ports for screws -that bolted the safe to the pallet it came on. Directions instruct the user to drill his own holes for floor-mounting, which I found odd, since other holes were there and the thing pretty much MUST be mounted to the floor for max security.
Many safes these days have a keypad lock for faster/easier access. This one did not, but it was not necessary for me as I wont keep anything in the safe that I need rapid access to. Other Browning models have this feature if you want it --seems to be about $100.00 extra.
By no means is this a top-of-the-line safe, but I thought it was an excellent value for the price, and a good $200 savings over the standard retail on a Browning bronze series. Better than RedHead or the safes in WalMart, stronger, heavier and with a better fire rating.
I've managed to memorize the combination and have no complaints. Am going over to eBay for the dehumidifier now.
