  1. I've followed football my entire life until this year. I saw all those dipsticks sitting on their arses during the National Anthem and lost interest. It's their right but I'm not supporting it either. Haven't watched but a couple of minutes of football all season and find I survived just fine so I'll be doing something else when the Super Bowl comes on.

  2. I recently picked this one up on a trade. A Beretta M9A1 Compact L Inox. Mods include full inox controls, Elite II hammer, oversized mag release, solid stainless guide rod, front sight was drilled & red fiber optic installed, Novak rear sight, X-grip adapter w/18+1 Mec-Gar mag, Elite II barrel crown, short reach trigger, & I had the barrel shortened to fit flush with the slide.

  5. Starbucks deserves props here. And, I say that as someone who has seen them hire individual veterans that I've known in transition, and ones I've been privilleged to meet through programs like Room In The Inn. There will always be mental health issues that will contribute to homelessness issues. But, if every big company had the commitment to hiring veterans that Starbucks has, we'd have a much smaller problem than we currently have. Your care for one group doesn't have to exclude another one.

  6. I've always been enamored of single shot guns. Just something about their simplicity catches my attention and I enjoy taking my time in the shooting of them. It's very hard to "spray and pray" with a single shot. With the conclusion of H&R, I've been watching CVA on Bud's closely for a 44 magnum rifle. I really like that stainless and camoed stock 44 they are carrying. Now, within the last couple of days there arises a newcomer! https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/single-shot-rifle/ Hhmmmmm!

  9. I got a jones for some Benton's bacon last year after hearing all the hype. Found out where it was sold in Knoxville and went on the hunt. I'll never try it unless someone else is serving it. For what it costs there needs to be some actual meat. I'm not paying $13 or $14 for a pound of sliced fat.

  10. We had Bentons bacon once and my impression was very similar to yours. It wasn't bad, but it really didn't live up to the hype or cost. I can get better for less at the grocery store.

  13. I'm tired of trying to keep up with all the social justice warriors that need to be boycotted. I figure the Donald won't forget. It's one of his "personality flaws" I'm pretty sure he's not gonna lose at the game. I'll pick some opportunities to spend money elsewhere. I just won't go very far out of my way to do it. I figure half the folks are trump supporters, so it will probably hurt the libtard in the long run. Again, I will make sure some money gets diverted to other vendors.

  17. I guess this is more or less to let you know about a great place to get them. I needed some small jigs (1/80 oz) without a collar and didn't want to pay Basspro $5.50 for ten of them. Started looking on e-bay and found some, $12.99 per 100 + 2 free ones with free shipping. What blew my mind was I ordered them Thursday and got them today. The seller on e-bay is killerjigs and they're in Huxley, Iowa. They sell a lot of other fishing stuff too.

  21. Following up on my last post, another thing to consider is that Amazon could close its doors today and Brezos would still be filthy rich. He probably has more money than he could ever spend so even a successful boycott would not be likely to hurt him. It would, however, hurt all of the employees who could and likely would lose their jobs if Amazon's business declined or if Amazon closed its doors. If we want jobs for Americans then boycotting a company that hires lots of Americans might not be the best approach. Again, people are, of course, free to spend their money anywhere they wish. Heck, I generally avoid Target but to be honest I didn't really shop there very much to begin with. I just wanted to toss it out there that the intended consequences of a boycott and the real consequences can be very different.

  23. The 30" is nice, but a taller unit would be better IMHO, deer sausage hangs a bit low in it. You can make a workaround, or just lay the sausage on the grills, but they smoke a bit unevenly that way. For regular things it would be great as is, but the MES lends itself to many mods, some of which I've done, others are going to be this spring. Not my pics, but you get the idea. To control airflow/smoke, works great. MES Mailbox Mod! for use with AMNPS. Not done yet, can't get the AMNPS working yet. To hang sausage a bit higher, raises it almost perfectly for summer sausage.

  24. In today's market, I believe the single shot rifle is a "niche" gun. The prevalence of bolt, semi-autos (both military style and civi-style) and even pump rifles all outweigh the firepower of a single shot rifle. Yet, I like them. They force me to enjoy the whole experience of shooting and not just the thrill of pulling the trigger and hearing "bang" like the semi-autos do! When I shoot my single shot rifles, I take much more time preparing the shot and then following through. For me, it is a natural partner to my handloading endeavors. I took a friend who is just beginning to shoot to the range today and let them shoot my H&R Handi in 357. A whole handful of 38's took almost 30 minutes to shoot and we spent more time smiling than shooting because of the tinny plink sound that slow bullet made on the steel out at 110 yards. It's a whole different kind of fun shooting those bullets just one at a time. Thinking back over the last few years, I would have been just as adept at hunting with a single shot rifle as with my bolts. Each of the last 6 or 7 deer were one shot drops, something that a single shot could have accomplished. Still, I grab that bolt .308 as if my life depends on it!!! LOL! Anyway, I just like 'em and I'm glad there's another manufacturer to fill H&R's vacuum. Now if only Henry would make a single shot rifle in 357 and price it competitively with CVA, I would be a happy boy.

  27. There are a few areas (other states) where they have "primitive firearm season" instead of muzzleloader season. I believe those allow a single shot firing a cartridge made before 1900 or was originally black powder. For most though it's like the difference between a single action revolver and a double action, some just prefer the feel and nostalgia. Some, myself included, when hunting non dangerous game for sport, feel a single shot rifle is more sporting than a repeater. Just different strokes for different folks.

  28. My wife got some of Bentons smoked bacon a while back, and maybe I'm weird, but I wasn't impressed. It was terribly salty and the smoky flavor had a kinda burnt tinge to it. Maybe she just got a bad batch, I wasn't happy, especially given the price.

  29. This sort of thing really pisses me off, some middle level drone making some judgement with absolutely no basis in law, federal or state. None. Might be better for Chances to approach his rep/senator for any opinion since he is vested in the HCP process, but I'lll try through my rep first. He's not bad on gun stuff, though not exactly gung ho, and he has anwered all my emails in the past with personal response. I'll see if he'll ask Slatery's official opinion on: - is there any difference under TN law for and 18-20 year-old to possess a handgun than for a 21 year-old? - does section (e) of 39-17-1307 (exception for firearm possession in vehicle) include all adults, or only those 21 years old? - does section (e) of 39-17-1307 (exception for firearm possession in vehicle) make any distinction between long guns and handguns? And I'll tell him what's up with the DOS training regimen regarding this, see if he or Slatery will do anything about it. - OS

  31. Respect, meh; they are doing it for publicity otherwise they would just do it and be quiet about it. IMO they are very left leaning and only "support" veterans because it helps their bottom line. Besides, if I were running a business I would rather hire veterans who were honorably discharged because at the very least they have learned how to be on time and meet guidelines. So if you get that kind of worker and can get some public props for doing it, well win-win. And before someone says it, I do understand that there are some vets I wouldn't trust to make my coffee, but there are fewer of them than there are school aged ones in the same boat.

  32. I have the utmost respect for what Starbucks is doing to help our Vets for sure. As for hiring an equal amount of refugees, with what Trump is doing to block the refugees coming into the country until they are totally vetted, that will probably slow down the numbers Starbucks will be hiring any time soon. Like many have said which I do agree, I would much rather see the Refugees working and paying taxes and becoming a part of what is right with the community rather than sitting home collecting tax money being paid by the working people of this great country...........jmho
    1 point
  33. Maybe. What is says to me is that Starbucks is committed to helping those that they feel need it. There is no doubt that most refugees entering the US are going to need help. I'd much rather see a refugee working at Starbucks than sitting at home collecting a check from the taxpayers.

  34. Not to sound defeatist but I think there is also an economy of scale thing involved. Amazon, for instance, might piss off some of us with the opinions of the CEO, etc. We are free to boycott if we wish but we must realize that, with a huge company like Amazon, we probably aren't really going to make a dent and the company probably won't even notice. People who use Amazon regularly or even semi-regularly and who decide to boycott, however, will notice when they have to go out of their way to find a product that isn't available locally, pay more for the product than it might cost on Amazon, end up paying more total shipping because they can't order everything they want from one place with one shipping fee or get the product, find it is defective, damaged or just the wrong thing and don't have Amazon to back them up when trying t make it right with the vendor. Not every person who boycotts Amazon would face those things but some will. Meanwhile, as I said, Amazon probably wouldn't even notice that there was a boycott so those folks would only be hurting themselves. As there is no, real alternative to Amazon that does exactly what Amazon does the phrase, "Cutting your nose off to spite your face," comes to mind. Still, for some people the positive feeling they get from knowing that they, at least, are not supporting Amazon may well be worth it. Also, while I don't agree with Bezos and hope that the lawsuit he is supporting fails miserably, I have to commend Amazon on certain things, as well. My former sister-in-law works for their Athens site as an order picker and based on discussions with her I think that, on the whole, the company treats its employees exceedingly well. Now, I am sure that they work hard but Amazon at least acts like they appreciate the hard work. In fact, I think a lot of companies could learn from the way Amazon treats its employees. Obviously, by their example, companies don't have to treat employees like crap in order to make a buck or be successful. For that reason I am kind of torn about boycotting them, anyway, even if I thought such a boycott would be effective. While I don't agree with the political stance at the same time another big issue that is always at the forefront of my mind is the way companies treat their employees.

  37. It's designed and engineered to not require the grease fittings in order to save on manufacturing expenses. Once its worn to the point of replacement then its replaced which results in factory parts replacement and billable parts and labor to the customer. The reality is that even with grease fittings drivetrain parts still wear out.

  38. I had an '06 Xterra that had the same factory U-joints. I replaced them both around 185K miles after they started to chatter a bit. I look at u-joints as a wear item - just know that ones that can't be greased might wear a little faster. I say might, as they're supposed to be sealed. But the needle bearings in mine were rusty as all get out when I pulled them. If it really bothers you, new heavy duty u-joints with grease fittings are maybe $12.

  39. If the price of meat keeps going up I will be forced to either hunt my own again or become a vegeitaritian. Iabout the only time I buy meat these days is if I catch it in a mark down butcher sale at Krogers and then have to take what is offered between Pork or Beef or do without. The only up side is I do have almost 3 deer in the freezer thanks to my son and grandsons. Made some deer chili the other night................

  42. The guys I used to shoot "custom" 1022s with generally look at shooting off the bench: 25yrds has to be 1/4" or smaller, 50yrds 1/2", 100 yrds 1" and 200 yards 2". I am blind and cheap (no good spotting scope) so went shooting 2" saltine crackers 200 yrds. We now call them "cracker guns" if we can put one together we can shoot relatively fast and bust successive saltines at 185-200yrds.
