  1. Let her choose the gun. It is natural to try to make a decision like that for women you love. That would be a mistake.

  2. College is kind of a time to learn how to operate as a grown up - hopefully with some boundaries - and hopefully without permanent consequences. I think you've kind of answered your question. She's around people her age - and some of them are going to do stupid stuff. Your responsibility as a parent is to help the consequences of that matter less. You've clearly done a great job so far. I wonder if a conversation about defense for a college aged girl coupled with some pepper spray and a good knife wouldn't be a better option? On the firearm front I like a handgun with a lockable safe that can be bolted down. College apartments aren't the most secure places. I don't like the shotgun just because it's harder to secure.

  3. Firstly, I would like to say thank you for raising such a well rounded young lady. You certainly seem to have informed and educated her to a level of responsibility almost unheard of in today's society. That being said, you have also shown wisdom in the areas of worry and what she may encounter while living the college life. I will not presume to know what is best for her. With the obvious training you have given, it seems she would be comfortable with whatever you and she might choose together. Others will surely have their own ideas, but I think the Mossberg with light loads is a good choice. Also possibly something like a S&W Govenor comes to mind. Whatever the two of you choose, also factor in this roommate. Does she also have the same mindset and similar training? What might be her capabilities? Picking a defensive weapon for both of them also adds to the mix. My best wishes for you in the search.

  4. It only seems like a few days have passed sine we experienced the helpless feeling of bringing home a brand new human being. No instruction manual, no warranty; nothing. I guess we must have done something right. He's graduating 15th out of more than 200, made all district on the baseball team, and has an academic scholarship to TN Tech in the fall. I guess he doesn't need us much anymore.

  7. I had lunch with my daughter today and we discussed this. For now she is more comfortable without a firearm. She wants to see how things play out in the beginning. I am of the mindset now that if she does decide she needs a gun, that a quick access safe and a revolver would be the better option. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  10. Can buy one at a gun dealer until 21. Can possess after 18. And the governor of judge would be a great option

  12. http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/18/politics/china-us-jets-intercept/ I hope the Chinese RIO took a nice Polaroid, and that this earns the crew a shot at Chinese Top Gun, where, after a game of beach volleyball, they discover that one of the female instructors has, in fact, lost that loving feeling.

  14. 18 is the age to possess a handgun or buy one from an individual in TN. You have to be 21 to buy a handgun or handgun ammo from an FFL Some states do let 18 year olds carry handguns. I personally do not think it is a big deal for an 18 year old to have a handgun. I legally had a handgun at that age and did carry it legally on me and in my vehicle at times. I think it is a good idea for a young lady traveling alone and of course living in an apartment. I'd just look at one of those electric pistol safes if there is a roommate to keep the roommate or other unauthorized people from handling the gun when not at apartment.

  16. I thought you and maybe a couple of others would know. I didn't really know what it was, but thought it looked an awful lot like an M14. I also bought an M5a1 bayonet I assume would fit it. I'm anxious to get it home and really check it out.

  19. It should be built on modified (not re-welded) Garand receiver. Parts are reasonable just now. Magazines are very well made and excellent design. Sadly, they are not interchangeable with anything else. For $200 you practically stole it!! These are nice .308 rifles. They are reliable, accurate, and very well-made. IIRC, Santa Fe imports were built by Beretta. If you don't like it, I'll let you double your money by selling it to me!!!

  23. Can't say a single thing positive about skullcandy. most of the people that like them haven't used a set of headphones that are well-built acoustically. Beats is probably the same quality as skullcandy, but you can't brag to your friends about having a $300 set of cheap Chinese headphones with a beats logo if you don't buy them! The other three, no experience with. With you on the bluetooth issue, I went through probably a dozen sets of headphones last year trying to get something that replicates the quality of my 1MORE triple driver headphones and there's just nothing that does... I've just stuck with a wired connection.

  31. Good choice on the headers. I picked up almost 30 rwhp when I put in the headers w/o cats. I know the 5th gen factory exhaust in better than the 4th gen (damn y-pipe!) but I would still expect a pretty increase. Between the gears and headers I lost over 6/10s in the quarter mile.

  32. I have gone a few times to purchase a firearm in a public place alone but it was always a TGO member in good standings. If I was meeting someone not a TGO member I never went alone but had an armed friend with me to watch everything going on.

  34. TICS is an alternative to NICS. There aren't two checks run. The TBI handles it instead of going to through NICS. You would still have to pay the 10 bucks regardless. I'm not just making stuff up. Here is a link to the ATF list. https://www.atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/permanent-brady-permit-chart Here is the important verbiage. Note: Notwithstanding the dates set forth below, permits qualify as alternatives to the background check requirements of the Brady law for no more than 5 years from the date of issuance. The permit must be valid under State law in order to qualify as a Brady alternative. Utah, Hawaii, and Nevada all operate similar to TN and have permits that allow them to skip NICS checks.
