  1. Some things have happened in the last week we need to learn from. Two corrections Officers were murdered on a prisoner transport bus in Georgia. There is video of the murders, but I have not seen it. This is all mere speculation on my part. Because the two murderers had to come through a locked gate to get to the Officers, I assume they forced their way through or somehow unlocked the gate. I’m not sure how that could happen without the Officers having time to get their guns out. So it makes me wonder...Were they thinking they weren’t justified in shooting these guys because they were unarmed. If that is the case it cost them their lives. They were justified in shooting them as obviously they were in immediate danger of death or great bodily harm. The results support that. I just read in another post that we have a legal system not a justice system. Absolutely, I have said that several times here. Being a former Police Officer I am absolutely sure of that. I am also absolutely sure that will not change. Justice? If you come through the incident alive you will get as much justice as you can afford. A poor person with a Public defender will likely not get the same outcome as a rich person or a high profile case where the “Big Names” are involved. Otto Warmbier died this week as the result of a murder. My guess is that he was beaten as soon as he got to prison and had a traumatic brain injury. I suspect the North Koreans waited a year so as not show any evidence. But that just a WAG. The Officer that shot Philando Castile was acquitted in court. What do these three incidents have in common? Situational awareness, common sense, and legalities. You are responsible for teaching your kids how to stay alive. One of the guys at work today asked “What do you think made Otto rip down that poster?” I said I can only guess that he forgot where he was and mistakenly thought he had some rights. He certainly didn’t deserve to die over it; but he did. Was Philando Castile going for a gun? I don’t pretend to know I didn’t hear the evidence. But I’ve been in shootings and had a gun pulled on me more than once. There is no time; you act or die. In this case a jury believed that they would have believed they were in immediate danger of death or great bodily harm. People need to know that whether it’s a cop, citizen, or armed robber, if some pulls a gun on them they have two choices, listen to exactly what the person is telling you to do and don’t make any wrong moves, or fight. There is no middle of the road; there is no time to think. Justice? We will never really know but the Officer stood trial and a jury acquitted him. I think the two corrections Officers may have taken that one or two very valuable seconds of hesitation and it cost them their lives. What would have happened had they gunned down the two unarmed convicts as they came through the gate? Well.. there would be plenty of people callings for their heads. Stay alive…. And teach your kids how to stay alive. If they are having an interaction with a cop and it goes wrong; there will be a time and a place to deal with it. Trying to deal with it right then on the street will likely end badly for them. I wish I could help kids understand traffic stops and the ramifications of DUI. They get so much bad information. Some of it coming from their parents and teachers, and a mountain of it coming from lawyers.

  2. I pretty much agreed with the Zimmerman verdict....Like it or not Trayvon Martin was not a "child" and he was the same height and weight as Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard. He would still be alive if he hadn't doubled back around and attacked Zimmerman. Zimmerman may be a douchebag but he has a right to defend himself from unlawful violence. I agreed with the Michael Brown investigation not leading to charges being filed. The whole "hands up don't shoot" has been proven to be fantasy and the coroners report shows a pretty clear picture of what happened. I even can see how Betty Shelby was acquitted (the officer who shot Terence Crutcher in Oklahoma). But I was truly surprised (and a bit dumbfounded) at the Yanez/Castile decision. When asked why he shot Castile , Yanez said "I don't know" . Really? You DON'T know? I get it that Castile matched the description of a robbery suspect in that area. That is enough to amp up any officer about to interact with someone. And you hate to Monday morning quarterback in these situations but it just seemed that Yanez was a little TOO amped up and maybe out of his depth. Was this the first time he'd ever encountered a legally armed citizen ? In the audio he seemed like someone who just realized he had really screwed up. I'll be the first to tell you that there is very little time to make a measured decision when human reaction time can mean the difference in life and death.....but this case just seems like a cop who was maybe a little too ready to shoot saw a black guy and a gun and fear of the two together lead to a shooting that should never have happened. I'm normally going to come down on the side of "if you don't fight the police you are not likely to get shot"....but Castile by all accounts was not fighting them and it is pretty unlikely he was initiating a gunfight with his girlfriend and her 4 year old daughter in the car. This is just a sad situation all the way around. And while I feel there are far too many families of criminals protesting their hoodlum family members finally falling victim to the law of averages (and not every "gentle giant" is in fact gentle), this one seems to be a case of at a bare minimum an officer being a little too quick on the trigger and that cost a man his life. .

  3. I'm going to state for the record that because of revenue snafus, I will be forced to wait until 6/30 to send payment. But rest assured that I will send it!

  5. There are ways that these folks can arm themselves... As others have opined... We dont need "polititian elitism" in toting weapons wherever they want... If we are a "Nation of Laws" (...which, by the way, i think we can quibble about...), they need to get their carry permit just like the citizens in their home districts get theirs... No more, no less... Period... "Fair dealin" leroy

  7. I suppose the officer might have handled it that way if that was the reason for the stop, but it was apparently just a pretext. He was pulled over for suspicion of robbery--a robbery he did not commit. http://www.kare11.com/news/police-scanner-audio-1/267042738 http://www.startribune.com/audio-officers-discuss-stopping-philando-castile-s-car/386337111/ I wonder if we'll ever know how the jury came to the "not guilty" conclusion.

  13. Yeah they need to get a license (non resident VA licenses are available) just like anyone else and carry concealed in Virginia very easy where this incident happened. If they want to carry in Maryland and DC, licenses are available to non residents and I'm sure federal politicians can make phone calls and get one easier than a lot of people. The higher up Congress folks like majority and minority leaders are protected 24/7 by Capitol police everywhere they go. Capitol police are also at the Congressional office buildings right by the Capitol. I highly doubt any Capitol police would keep a congressman or senator from carrying in his own DC office building or even in public in DC whether or not he has any sort of license. Have you ever heard of one getting arrested for it? Probably not a problem for them that want to carry compared to normal people.

  14. Unless you have a personal friend that can do it, everyone I have talked to has to take temporary possession of it before they will run it. If it's stolen, the keep it.

  15. Maybe. I've gotten the impression that most won't even do it unless you bring the gun in personally, as they of course want to take it if it is indeed hot. - OS

  16. A bit of searching around and I found this online. Italian howitzer circa the First World War. It was a mobile gun but was not self propelled. Designed in 1908 and built between 1914 and 1917, a total of 44 were built by Armstrong-Pozzuoli and Vickers-Terni. This howitzer was 305 mm.

  17. I only have a couple questions about this: 1) Has any of them that are getting these authorized carry permits been through any type of a training program to show them which end of the gun the bullet comes out of? 2) I wonder how many of them could pass Through a Back Ground Check???? Just curious!!

  18. Yea, I really don't see the issue. Sanction to hurt Russia financially must ultimately include weapons as I am sure it's probably right up there in the top items that we import. If Hillary was elected, it would be to hurt us, the America gun owner, not Russia.

  19. Well, as many of y'all may have seen, a verdict was handed down the other day in this case. I did my best to stay away from the politics of it last time, but I want to state for the record that I am extremely upset at the outcome of this trial. I believe it to be yet another reminder that we have a legal system instead of a justice system. Philando Castille did not receive any justice in this matter, posthumous or otherwise. That said, that's not the reason I am reviving this thread. I want to post Colion Noir's open letter on the subject. My hope is that as a name many of y'all are familiar with, and hopefully whose work and voice y'all value, his words may find some resonance where others may find resistance because of who they are

  21. As a machinist I'll say it's a bargain if done right. The real quasi on is how much would it cost me to do this work to this quality? The answer is self evident then.

  24. I generally like legislation that makes carrying available for more people, but in this case I have to say screw you, Mo Brooks! What makes him and his legislature buddies so special that they'll get to carry, but the Plebeians of Washington D.C. still can't lawfully defend themselves? He cites " Washington, D.C.'s rather restrictive gun laws " Then rescind those laws for everyone.

  28. I can’t really comment on the shooting you posted about because once again we only have one side of the story. However as I former cop I can respond on how to not to get killed on a traffic stop. Good points have already been made by others. I will tell the Officer I have a carry permit, and I am armed. I will ask how he wants to proceed. I will listen to him, follow his instructions and we will both go home alive. I fully understand that Tennessee law does not require you to inform a Police Officer you are armed. I also fully understand a Police Officer doesn’t need to have the gun pointed at him in a threatening manner before he shoots you to death. Him thinking you are going for it can get you killed. Video or not; you are dead. Communication as in most things is the key. Cops are killed every day in this country. Many are on so called “routine” traffic stops (there is no such thing) and “family fights”. Seeing your co-workers shot does something to you; I know that because I have through it. I have stood in the ER with two Officers and a perp shot and had crying nurses apologize to me because they had to try (and did) to save the scum bag that shot the Officers. It was a house the two Officers had been to any times. Only this time the guy opened fire. I decided that would never happen to me. Not on a domestic violence call and not on traffic stop. Pay attention, don’t do anything stupid, if you feel the need to display a gun for some reason or are going to reach in the area where a gun is; make sure the cop knows and agrees with what you are doing.

  29. You're about to see some serious stuff go down in this country. No one has any respect for others, and what used to be a "your word against the police" case has been all but done away with since everyone has a phone with a camera on their person. As authority clamps down ever harder, folks are getting quite wary of government and authority in general. Between this and the shooting in Baton Rouge, law enforcement aren't doing themselves any favors.
