  2. Our compound flew ours at half staff today, but other than that very little coverage. Soon it will be like Armistice Day, Dec 7th, V-E Day, VJ Day etc etc.

  3. I always take a moment to reflect - as unnecessary as that is since I can still smell it and taste it when I close my eyes at night. Today - 16 years on it strikes me that my children are closer to he age I was when it happened than I am now. And, that makes me angry and profoundly sad. In just a couple of years we'll have kids deploying who weren't even alive when we entered this war. But, do good. Tell the people you love that you love them. The world can change in an instant.

  4. I have watched a couple programs about it on the Biography channel and Discovery Channel but most of the news was focused on the Hurricanes. I can still remember what I was doing when I learned about it. I was fishing and had a radio playing some music and it was interupted to bring the news that we are under attack and went on to tell what had happened. At first I thought it was one of those Orson Wells programs but my room mate called me and told me he was watching it on TV. I loaded the boat and went home to watch it. Cars was lined up at all filling stations. I didn't bother stopping because at the time I had 3 30 gallon containers full at the house with sta-bil in them plus truck was almost full and both tanks in boat were full. I think many people still think of it often but most don't talk about it because they might say something to a person that lost someone that day in towers or Pentagon or on one of the planes. It is and was our Modern Day Pearl Harbor. There were 2403 killed at Pearl and 3150 total killed in Twin Towers and Pentagon and in Flight 93 that went down in PA. It's kind of hard to not think about it in some way since we are still at war with the enemy that attacked us and probably will be till the end of time because the people that attacked us all seem to have a death wish and there are Millions if not Billions of them we are fighting both home and abroad..........JMHO

  5. When I was a small kid, I helped my neighbors pollinate tobacco. They made tobacco seed for Co op. I also mowed yards, milked another neighbor's goats, etc; for money. As I got older and stronger, I helped cut and spike tobacco, and hang it in barns, as this paid much better than the pollinating because it was much harder work. I also hauled baled ha and straw. By the time I was in high school, I had purchased two classic cars, a 4x4 truck, bass boat, a Harley Davidson Sportster, and a racing dirt bike. I had a friend down the road who was more industrious than me. He raised his own tobacco crop, and built his own barn when he was about 14. Today, he's still a farmer, and a multi millionaire. The money is out there if a fellow has a little ambition and a good work ethic. Education not required.

  7. Well, it was graduation weekend for the broad breasted turkeys we raised this year. Started with 12, put 10 in the freezer. The other 2 suffered an unfortunate accident and were crushed... Average dressed weight of the males was a bit over 30# and the females was 27#. Put a little over 280# in the freezer. After our initial chicken graduation day I realized that I had waaay better things to do then to pluck birds by hand. Was going to build a plucker but ended up short on time and ordered a XXL plucker. Really glad we did that. It got around 98% of the feathers and the carcasses were much cleaner than the chickens we did by hand. It was also much faster. The only real snag was packaging them. I'd hoped to vacuum pack them but the 15" bags (max width of my vacuum sealer) were too small. Fortunately I'd ordered some xl and xxl shrink bags. The xl worked and once we got the system down they were the bomb... People say that turkeys are dumb and I'm not going to disagree but they were a hoot in general to raise. Very funny and when we let them out of their run they grazed well and came right back home. So, we will be doing them again. We also ordered some heritage birds. They are much smaller but also very cool. Getting ready to have to cut their flight feathers as they are getting a bit adventurous. We lucked out with 2 girls and 1 boy so I'm hoping they will figure out how to make me some free turkeys. I will probably do this again next year. Between them and the broiler chickens we have growing we will be fine on poultry for a while. I left one unfrozen. It will be boned out and then ground. We like to cook big batches of taco turkey and put it in the freezer for easy taco nights. Next up in our education are several types of pigs. I just need to get my fencing finished... Mark

  8. With the news focused on the hurricane I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the fact that another 9/11 anniversary is here. It's amazing how fast time flies. A lot has changed since 2001. CNN has some good stories up today that are worth reading including the story of how boats helped ferry 500,000 people from Manhattan. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2016/09/us/inside-9-11-the-day-that-never-ends/ http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/20/opinions/911-boatlift-rescue-opinion-dulong/index.html

  13. Why wait until election time? I try to handle gun stocks daily along with the actions and barrels. Seriously though, if anyone one here has any investments in Black Rock, Vanguard or Fidelity mutual funds and depending on the fund family they very well may be invested in firearm or ammunition industry.

  14. The schools near my house didn't even fly their flags at half mast. Made me wonder if they even teach it in history class. It is sad what has become of this country is such a short time! Never Forget! update, by noon at least one school lowered their flag.

  16. Because the entire point of the weekend was remembering those fallen and trying to understand just a little of what our 5th Special Forces Group brothers and their families go through, I'm taking a different tack with the match videos this time. It is beyond difficult to try to summarize in a few short minutes the amazing and humbling experiences of this weekend, but this is my effort so others may try to understand. Here is Stage 1: AL JAFR

  18. I know I may be in minority on this but I think it should be manditory that each new media spend about 10 minutes discussing 9/11 and showing to planes striking the towers at least once a week in Prime time so the young people being born after it took place can see and learn why we are still at war with this enemy so they will have some kind of reference to learn from. You know it will never be taught in our schools.............JMHO

  19. Yeah, there's no doubt at all of the Glock's simplicity when you want to take it apart to the individual pieces. The M&P fails that on the extractor roll-pin alone.

  20. If I can remember properly back when got mine new in the box the instructions said not to disassemble but just oil ever so often and enjoy shooting it.

  21. Yeah , I cant help it . It's just a quirk I have and I'm OCD. I love the old Ruger P-Series but they have the same thing to where you have to remove the rear sight for a complete slide disassembly. I used to have the same thing with roll pins but I am slowly getting over that , ha ha. I just like to have a gun that I can completely disassemble with no tools other than a nail , punch or something simple just like the Glock. Its just a quirk of mine and so far Glock fills that need. I still like these M&P's though.

  22. that's good to know, I was thinking about taking mine apart for a good cleaning. Haven't cleaned it before, no point in starting now.

  23. Huh? I mean, yeah, if you absolutely want to remove the firing pin safety for some reason? Otherwise, it's very easy to remove the striker assembly by just turning the slide over and depressing the FPS.

  25. I have never been an M&P fan. They just never had a natural feel in my hands. But, the one that did feel right is the .45 Shield. Got rid of my G36 for it, and haven't had one regret.

  27. I was on night shift back then on patrol. I remember after Bush ordered no flights , I was on patrol out where there were no street lights. I got out of my car and looked up and it was so weird to not see any aircraft lights at all in the night sky. Also it was cool to see an Apache and a Kiowa both taking turns hovering over the gates of Ft. Campbell . I was eating at Arbys right near gate 4 and was watching them go back and forth. Those next days I brought extra ammo and extra guns to what I already carried. I thought for sure that Ft. Campbell would get hit but thank God it didn't. Our city is right there with Ft. Campbell.

  28. I believe those were called punt guns. A market hunter, in a small boat with the "shotgun" muzzle resting in the bow of the boat, would float up towards a flock of water fowl floating on the water and kill many with one shot.

  29. About six years ago I borrowed a friends utility trailer to use for a school class float. The trailer light wires were broken as was the one remaining light. I re-wired the trailer and replaced the lights. I went ahead and wire brushed the trailer and hit it with a coat of rust-o-leum. I returned the trailer the day after the parade. Five years later (Last year) he called and asked if I wanted to borrow his trailer again.

  32. They've knocked about 0.25" off of the overall length and height of this one. I don't find the full size M&P to be that much bigger or harder to conceal than my Glock 19, so... I'm kind of with you on this.
