  1. Had a GREAT time last night recording the first episode with a few familiar faces here on TGO and a friend from up in New Hampshire. @Dolomite_supafly and @molonlabetn joined me to have a good conversation with Randy Harris (@Cruel Hand Luke) and Mark Lancaster from Squared Away Customs about practical training for civilians and educators. It's a pretty timely conversation with recent tragic events in Marshall County, Kentucky and Parkland, Florida. I have several hours worth of work to do today to get it packaged up and turned into a podcast. I should have it posted for you all to listen to tonight! I really can't thank these guys enough for their time, enthusiasm and knowledge. Please show Randy and Mark some love. Randy is one of our resident firearms training instructors and hosts classes in the Chattanooga area very frequently. Mark is a heck of a good holster manufacturer at Squared Away Customs and has offered up a discount code "Shooters Nation" for you guys.

  6. The the process for an emergency restraining order need to be looked at, hard. While I don't doubt that in some cases it may be warranted, it isn't every time. IMHO, in a case of a vindictive spouse, they should be charged with a crime for false reporting, and everything wiped from the wronged persons record.

  7. Haven't pulled this one out of the safe for quite some time. Colt's first foray in revolvers chambered in .357 Magnum and the granddaddy of all the snake guns. I believe this one is a fairly early manufacture due to the low serial number.

  9. Here are some of the top groups and what they paid in 2017 for lobbying. Feel free to check me on this. The NRA gave Senator Burr, of NC, $9900 and the media claims the senator is in their pockets. I think the NRA spent $3,200,000 last year on lobbying. They rank 488th so what makes them so powerful? I just want you to know so you can tell your friends. At least 4 of these organizations represent the media. National Assn of Realtors $54,530,861 Business Roundtable $27,380,000 Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America $25,847,500 Blue Cross/Blue Shield $24,330,306 American Hospital Assn $22,064,214 American Medical Assn $21,535,000 Alphabet Inc $18,140,000 AT&T Inc $16,780,000 Boeing Co $16,740,000 Open Society Policy Center $16,110,000 DowDuPont $15,877,520 National Assn of Broadcasters $15,460,000 Comcast Corp $15,310,000 Lockheed Martin $14,464,290 Amazon.com $13,000,000 Southern Co $12,970,000 National Retail Federation $12,890,000 NCTA The Internet & Television Assn $12,790,000 Oracle Corp $12,385,000

  10. To add on to this, when I hear people say this, I wonder how much time they actually spend with kids? Yes, there are some examples of people making poor choices that are amplified by social media - and a traditional media run by an older generation. I expect every generation has those. People just have more public platforms to capture their mistakes these days. But, I’ve got to say that I’m long on these kids. Some of them are among the smartest kids I’ve ever met - and with tools like have never been seen before in history. I often kind of find myself envious of what they’ve got at their disposal. The world has changed more in 50 years than it has in the last 50,000. It shouldn’t be surprising that a lot of people find themselves confused by it. But, give them a chance. Every generation has to find its way as it matures. I’ve no doubt that this one will come into its own. Their solutions won’t look like those of previous generations - but look at where those have gotten us.

  11. The NRA is pretty powerful, it's not the money that makes them so powerful, it's the 5 million+ votes they offer. The line from the left these days is that the NRA represents firearm manufacturers and not gun owners, that's the biggest bunch of hogwash I've ever heard.

  18. Buy a 1911 and then another and then another. When does it stop?
    1 point
  19. For me, the 1911 is pure Americana. I only feed mine 230gr. FMJ's since that's what John Browning designed it for. I also never carry the thing; it's a range gun only. If I want to carry a .45acp, then I have my Glock for that. Is that what they say? "Show you friends your 1911, and you're enemies your Glock."? The 1911 is just a classic. The Beretta 92 is another classic. I don't have one yet, but there will come a day when I have one, merely because it's a classic too.

  24. I haven't either. I don't really care much about the discount. To me, this is more about being singled out by companies. Seems to me that they don't want to be associated with folks like us. That means they don't like our money either. Losses in sales are more effective than tweets. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  25. Oh, so you never got to eat there? Ok, I thought the Grill might have been someplace else and you had to drive by the mall to get to it. Still, interesting story about the sorta active shooter that was not really one but a Glock was found in the parking lot and it was not shooting anyone. So maybe it is true that guns don't kill people or surely it would have killed someone!!!.........JMHO

  26. Yeah, I’m really excited about it this year. I should have the time off to hit the woods that I haven’t had in recent seasons. I will also be using a Reminton 1100. It’s an older one that doesn’t get used much, so I’m looking forward to bagging a turkey with it. The fixed full choke 30” barrel throws a tight pattern with 3” Nitro Turkey #5’s. I like a box call the best. Using a Cody box, Cody slate and a couple of mouth calls. I just got a new vest from Cabelas! If the kids go with me, I’ll probably use the Double Bull blind, otherwise just the base of a tree. Oh, and I won’t go out without a Thermacell. I’ve already had a tick on me this year!!

  28. I don't think so, my ex wife threatened my life in front of her boyfriend and I went for a restraining order. No proof asked for and 10 minutes later it was granted. I was shocked that it was so easy! I was glad obviously but suprised because it wouldn't take the slightest effort for a vindictive person to do the same unwarranted.

  29. I have been sitting back reading some of the generalized comments on this thread that are painting LEOs with a very broad brush as a result of the despicable actions of this Officer. There may have been some extenuating circumstance driving his inaction, but I cannot honestly imagine what it would have been. I retired from my Law Enforcement career after 25 years and yes, I have run to the gunfire on many occasions...and still do today as demonstrated last year in my community. I entered my career in LE as a public servant, I swore to Serve and Protect the citizens, and did to the best of my ability. I don't care what some court may have determined, it was my duty and I readily accepted such as do 99% of the Officers wearing a badge. Yes, there is the 1% still out there that were hired and should not have been, and then retained through negligent retention. Some of that 1% may well be "good people" but not cut out to be Officers for they are not of the "Sheepdog" mentality. Let's take care and condemn the actions of the individual when warranted, not the profession. Do not let the actions of a few soil the reputation of the whole. We as gun owners in general fall prey to this every time some nimrod skins his ignorance with a firearm and anti-gunners lump all into the same pot. Much as though some of the comments have done regarding LEOs. With the information available, the Officer disgraced himself and the profession at a insurmountable cost. Prayers for those lost and their families, prayers for the 99% to endure and prevail, and the 1% to find another profession.

  31. A few things that I would put in a general bag that do not require rotation. This is if NOT flying and is a general "if" bag. Fixed blade knife - Mora's are good if you just want it to stay there and not worry about cost: http://amzn.to/2ycaRkr Folding Knife - for places where a fixed blade would be frowned upon. I like the Gerber Air Ranger I just picked up. Good knife, but cheap enough to knock around with: http://amzn.to/2FrYOja Gloves - In case you need to work on the car or something. I like the Mechanix brand : http://amzn.to/2FugUBj. Toss some latex ones in there too in case you need to uses them when the others are too thick. Keeps you hands clean for that dinner date. Disposable coveralls - cheap and good in case you are dressed up and get a flat or something. Get big enough to go over your nice clothes. It is sort of a luxury item, but under $10. http://amzn.to/2EQkKaT Disposable lighter - I find myself needing one all the time even though I don't smoke. Starting fires, lighting candles, burning rope to keep it from unraveling, etc. Small tool kit/roll - flat and Philips screwdriver, vice grips, crescent wrench, etc. A Multitool might replace this, but might not do as well on certain jobs. Extra socks - a dry pair of socks can do a world of good if yours get soaked. Flashlight - I seem to always be needing one. I like my Streamlight Stylus Pro. http://amzn.to/2gNDE3D Cash - i agree, but a stock of 1's and some quarters. Nice when you need something from the hotel vending at 1 am. Hotels dry me out, so I always need a drink. Phone chargers - just in case you forget one and nothing is close. Some more "survival" based items if you want them in there would be: Fire Starting Rod - This works wet and is small. Toss a zip lock with a couple cotton balls smeared in petroleum jelly and you can start fire anywhere. Good if your car breaks down in BFE. http://amzn.to/2ESz0f8 Candle - Good for light and can keep a small area (such as a car) fairly warm. Just seal it in a zip lock in case it melts. First aid kit - Just a small one, but so you always have something around. Seems like a lot, but nothing there, besides maybe the tools, are large or heavy. The kit I keep in my car is a lot larger, but I am just that way. If you ccw, I would put an extra mag in there and maybe a tiny cleaning kit. A piece of cloth, bank line, and some oil should be enough. Never know when you might stop by a range out of town.

  32. Do you get a hearing on retraining orders now? Nope. Many time restraining orders are used in Divorces so one party can get the other party off the property while they clear out the house. The same liberal Judges that are allowing cities and states to violate our immigration laws will keep every gun they can get seized. They aren't going to want to return anything.

  33. I’m not either, and on it’s face, I couldn’t care less who offers NRA discounts. What bothers me is the reason they are jumping ship. This is a direct attack of the membership and evidently they don’t want our money, I’ll be happy to not send them any where I can. This newfound hatred of the NRA isn’t mainly at the NRA leadership, it’s at the members and even non-member gun owners. The reason I signed up for the NRA Visa is supposedly they are to send the NRA a couple of cents for every dollar I spend. I figured that sounded like a good deal so I signed up. I throw away half a dozen CC offers in the the mail each week, it’s not like I’ll have trouble finding another one. I did reach out to the NRA to see if they are going to partner with another bank.

  34. I went to the Survival Expo. Only a few individual MREs at $10 each. No case lots. The whole thing was a big disappointment. Lots of useless junk. Very little of it actually geared to survival. Didn't even make a decent gun show. BTW: I'm not interested in freeze dried or dehydrated foods. The way I see it, in a real SHTF scenario, clean water will be more precious than food.

  37. And just to be clear on the 1911, I've owned quite a few of them. Just don't own one right now. I do love the fact that I can tinker with them. Whenever I've brought one home the very first thing that happenes is that it winds up on my table with everything but the sights stripped out of it. I love doing that. And it makes it worse. The sickness runs deep!

  38. Greg... RE: "The 1911 siren song".... It happens with all real pistoleros Brother... It did with me years ago (...in the 70's and 80's...)... I reloaded and burned lotsa powder thru em with round nose hardball... I carried a gubmt model and a commander as well... Grew to like the LW commanders better than any of the others... Don't carry em anymore... Too old and curmudgeonly to do so, and the Colts are too valuable to carry... Sadly, i think time has passed em by, like that great old killer the SAA and the great Smith "N" frames... Havin said all that, it is my belief that every finished pistolero owes it to themselves to own and learn to shoot proficiently the great 1911... Preferably a genuine Colt Gubmt Model... Remember, Brothers n Sisters, the 1911 was birthed as a cavalry pistol to replace that greatest of pistols ever, the Colt SAA... There are tales of the old troopers refusin to turn their beloved SAA's for the newfangled 1911, as well as tales of em rawhiding down the grip safety on em to make sure they went off when they needed to... The "Cocked n Locked" thing came after the calvary died... The old timers carried em hammer down or on the half cock and cocked em to shoot ALA the old SAA... They put the safety on after the shootin was over... HEHEHE... calvary leroy, the lefty 1911 pistolero....

  39. I watched a good bit of it but it becomes rather tedious when the answer to EVERY question ends up being "assault weapon ban" to the thunderous cheers of ill informed traumatized people (and most likely a peppering of professional protesters/agitators ) . In fact I think the Broward County Sheriff ended every statement he made with "we need an assault weapon ban". Keep in mind this is the same network and same sheriff's office that along with CNN put on an EGREGIOUSLY DISINGENUOUS hit piece report on "assault weapons" back in 2004 in support of not letting the ban expire where they brought out a FULL AUTO AK and shot cinder blocks with it arguing that those guns didn't need to be "back on the streets". They KNOWINGLY flat out LIED to the entire country about what the 1994-2004 ban even effected....so do we think this thing last night would be anything other than a thinly veiled anti gun pep rally?

  40. Oh, yeah, my first .44 Special: I bought this gun in September of 1954, a .45 Colt New Service, for $32.95. Advertised price was $24.95, but "select" grade and shipping got it to the higher price. It was a Canadian Mounted Police revolver, originally .455 Caliber, but reamed to .45 Colt. I was a lot younger then, in 1954, and reading a lot of Elmer Keith, so wanted a .44 Special. I took the gun to York Arms here in Memphis for conversion to .44 Special. A machine shop here in Memphis mounted the S&W rear sight for me, and a "around the corner" gun shop mounted the Micro front sight and ramp and reblued it. Lettering was filled in with gold, and I made the walnut stocks. Before I got it finished, the .44 Magnum had been introduced, but I was too heavily invested in this project to get a Magnum. It was not until 1971 or so that I got my first Magnum, a Ruger Super Blackhawk. Bob Wright

  41. I, too, share your love for the .44 Special, though I prefer mine to be of the Single Action variety: The two on the left are Colt New Frontiers, the upper right is a Ruger Blackhawk ex-.357 Magnum Three Screw, and an Uberti Cattleman. More recently I added this Flat Top Ruger Blackhawk: But I'm doing my best to remain impartial and do pick up a .44 Magnum or .45 Colt at times, just to keep up appearances. Incidentally, while I did use a lot of Hercules Unique for many years, I've been wooed over to HS-6, finding 8.0 grs. HS-6 to be my pet oald so far for the .44 Special. Bob Wright
