  1. An honest enemy I can respect. A false friend not so much.

  2. I just had an anti-gun coworker praise this article and then 10 minutes later claim "I'm not saying we should ban guns". Then he contradicted himself a 2nd time and said he didn't think we should have AR-15's. It isn't possible to have a rational discussion with someone when they are not even being honest in their beliefs.

  3. One relic commenting on another supposed relic, I suppose. I will acknowledge his right to say such a thing. Respect it? Never. It flies in the face of everyone who has taken arms, living and dead, in service to this country. That a former member of SCOTUS should say such a thing, IMO, falls under the "aid and comfort" clause of U. S. Code, Title 18, Part I, Chapter 115, paragraph 2381. SWC

  6. Seems like they could have the convention somewhere nearby headquarters in Virginia and supply a steady stream of buses down to the mall. Ask vendors to support water stations / hot dog tents / whatever in addition to their booth at the show. Provide firearm literacy, education, talk with some representatives. Plus, you’d get to see some memorials to boot...

  7. I first wrote this as a response in the thread about Remington filing for bankruptcy but, realizing it went far afield from the topic, I decided to start a new thread. I realize that Remington's woes haven't come solely from a slump in sales but that bankruptcy combined with the current zeitgeist have me thinking how firearms companies - and the firearms community, in general - might need to weather the storm that is potentially coming. So these are my thoughts: Personally, I think that the future for Remington (and Marlin - and Winchester, too) may well lie in the past. Right now there is a lot of heat being dumped on semiauto firearms and especially on AR15 type rifles. I also believe that there is also a wave of nostalgia that is getting ready to break over the country that is going to impact the wants and buying habits even of individuals who weren't around when the 'nostalgia' items were more popular in the first place. Heck, I read an article the other day that was talking about how cassette tapes are making a bit of a comeback and have also read that board games seem to be gaining popularity as a means to socialize - I have even noticed that several of the microbreweries around Knoxville have a stack of board games in one corner or another that people can take out and play while they hang out and drink beer. I believe that firearms companies could somewhat take advantage of such trends. I think there are a lot of folks who aren't specifically anti but who also aren't specifically firearms enthusiasts who could be reached if these long standing companies (or at least the legacy companies that have the rights to use the branding) put a little less emphasis on building yet another line of plastic fantastic bottom feeders that look the same as every other pistol or rifle of the type and focus a little more on updated versions of more 'traditional' firearms - with said updates including making them affordable. These companies still make lever action rifles and Marlin apparently pushed a few new ones at SHOT show this year. The problem is that most of those new Marlins looked, to me, to be geared toward people who are already gun collectors and enthusiasts with prices that will likely reflect the same. Likewise, things like double barrelled shotguns still exist but to my knowledge no American company still makes a good side by side double with a 'value' price like the old Stevens doubles, etc. Instead, the American made doubles tend to be high dollar models geared toward avid bird hunters or skeet shooters, etc. Heck, even dumbass Joe Biden 'endorsed' the idea of having a double barrel shotgun for home defense (even if his comment encouraging people to just shoot into the darkness without being sure of their target was stupid and irresponsible.) The same thing seems to be happening with revolvers. Sure, there are wheel guns like the EAA Windicator and the Rossi and some Taurus models but I can't think of any revolvers on the new gun market with a name like Remington, Smith and Wesson, etc. that are regular, full sized revolvers with an affordable (as in budget/value line) price tag made by an American company. I know that Colt has brought back/is bringing back some version of the old Detective Special. I think that they should follow that up by bringing back the last iteration (late '70s) of the Police Positive. Likewise, maybe S&W should gear up some of the old tooling (if they still have it and can find it) and start making the Model 10 in .38 Special, again. Remington could also get into the game. Let's face it, most people don't need an AR15 with a 30 round mag or a semiauto pistol with a 15 round magazine to defend themselves and their homes. Do I support efforts to ban or limit the availability of such firearms and/or magazines? Do I think we should just roll over and allow such firearms to be taken? Hell no! But for the industry to survive the current, growing perception of such firearms among the general public - and to still manage to sell firearms to said general public - putting the majority of their eggs in the 'high speed, low drag' basket may not be the best approach. Like it or not, those of us who are interested in maintaining and even growing our firearms rights as well as the companies which manufacture firearms are going to have to find a way to market and sell firearms to Millennials and their children. I also believe that as life gets more and more hectic and fast paced for these individuals they will increasingly yearn for a 'simpler time' - probably a 'simpler time' that never really even existed, as is often the case with nostalgia - and which they weren't around to experience first hand. Of course, maybe these are just my thoughts because I, personally, prefer revolvers, levers and pumps to semiautos and even with semiautos I prefer some steel and maybe some wood (although I own some semiautos, too - and even a couple of 'plastic' ones) but I really think that the way forward for firearms companies and for the continued strength of gun rights lies with getting people on board who might never dream of owning an AR or a Glock but who might not hesitate to buy a lever gun like Grandpa used or a revolver like Grandma kept next to her bed at night. Get those people 'into the fold', so to speak by increasing the choices and availability of such firearms as well as extolling their utility and virtues and - whether or not they go on to purchase more 'modern' type firearms - I believe that they will be less likely to support the loss of the right to keep and bear arms. Just something to think about.

  9. The lack of rational discussion is the biggest problem. We can't let that go anymore. Shaking your head and walking away because you can't wrap your head around the depth of the crazy can't be an option any longer. We HAVE to talk about it. I can't say I have great ideas on how to reason with the unreasonable, as it can be akin to mud wrestling with a pig, but silence is no longer a valid response. As Jared Reston said, don't just fight the fight, win it.

  10. It is because they want it to look like we are going to loose our gun rights. It creates fear within the gun community and it is that fear that generates income for them. I can guarantee they are sending out mailers demanding even more money to fight. They have plenty of money on hand to put up a strong fight but they refuse to do it so it looks like we are going to loose our gun rights. And the liberals do have something right, the NRA throws a lot of money at our representatives in Washington. Why would those in office not also benefit from this turmoil, they themselves have a hand in. I mean if the representatives we elected talk of restricting gun rights in comes the NRA to throw money at them. Perhaps it is time to start following the money and embarrassing those in power who take NRA money but do nothing to help gun owners. What are all these A+ NRA rated legislators doing for gun owners? We have a super majority and our gun rights are being stripped away faster than ever before. Remind me again how our representatives are representing those who elected them. They are only representing their own interests.

  11. So, why is this something only the anti-gun crowd can do? The NRA's IRS Form 990 filed last September showed $36 million on hand after expenses. What's stopping them from doing the same thing and getting pro-gun people walking the streets of DC and in swing states with adequate funding to support? They manage to get an annual convention/trade show organized year after year, so you can't say they don't have the needed resources.

  12. Banning one thing always leads to others. How soon until pistol braces are attacked? By the time people start complaining about them trying to ban shotguns, it will be far too late. It is not about whether you would use them, but whether people should have a decision. Hell, I think we should repeal the NFA and I really never see me buying a full auto. If you want it and you have a clean record you should be able to buy it.

  13. Remington has been losing ground for a long time now. Even during the recent period (Obama Years) of an astronomical volume of firearm sales. Yet your leftist media is reporting it as though it is the result of recent pressure/events of anti-gunners. They will cheer as though they accomplished something and those in the middle will know no different.

  16. Could it be that one of the things that you most definitely DID donate to had a checkbox at the donation page saying something along the lines of "Check here to support the Firearms Policy Coalition with a one time donation of $5.00?" That is also possible. I'm not sure whether that organization "partners" with anyone is a way such as that but it is somewhat common for groups such as that to "piggy back" off each other.

  20. Wall Street doubled down on this one. Cerberus has been trying to get out of this for a couple of years. JP Morgan and Franklin Templeton Investments basically took this on for .25 on the dollar. They had already negotiated a haircut with lenders. Basically the billion dollars of debt the hedge fund saddled them with in the various buyouts sank them when revenues sank over the last few years. But note, that the billion dollars didn’t just vaporize - it went into someone’s pockets. Some brands could go away here. Bushmaster and DPMS are at risk. AAC and Tapco are owned by the brand as well. They own Marlin, too.

This is where the danger lies, with liberal justices that want to change the Constitution instead of defending it. Good thing he is retired, anyone with this attitude should be pulled from SCOTUS or any federal court immediately!

  24. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. If one link thinks it's ok to be told, or tell someone else what we/they may own/need...then that's a weak link in the chain. The chain weakens when we all do not stand together. Whether or not you own, or personally like a product or a particular firearm; when we sacrifice unity, we all lose. Perhaps the term "traitor" to the cause here is a bit harsh, but the spirit of the statement I think is true. We must pull together with a united front on these issues. If we give in on one item, that just empowers the other side to scream for more surrendering of items and rights. Whether we all embrace a particular item or not, that unity is very important. Stand together guys. For all our sakes.

I don't necessarily agree with your stance, but that does not make you a traitor. That language is extremely strong.

I know this guy very well and he's not a corner-cutter. He'll steer you right.

  27. I have a Haulmark Low Hauler. Mines a motorcycle trailer not a V-nose, but they make one. Mines a 8x12 dual axel that I’ve had for 20 years with no issues. When I bought mine everyone around here had the price jacked up because they were hard to find other than at the motorcycle shops that had the price really jacked up. I was going to Illinois anyway, so I went to a place right outside Haulmark in Indiana and picked mine up. It saved me $1000. A trip to Florida is also an option if you want to save some money. Funny story. I recently wanted a small trailer. My low Hauler is nice but it’s big when only hauling one bike. I was looking for a 5x8 with a ramp. I went to a large trailer dealer in the MidState. I told them what I wanted and the salesman took me out on the lot in a Golf Cart. He showed me a trailer that had a pretty big price tag for a 5x8. I ask if he had anything else. He said “Are you looking for something that costs less?” I said yes, or a better price on that one. He said Okay and motioned me to get in the cart. He went back to the office got out of the cart, thanked me for stopping by and walked back inside. That would have pizzed a lot of people off, but I couldn’t do anything but laugh and leave. I guess he didn’t need to negotiate on price and was offended I would suggest it. I ended up buying used. http://haulmark.com/trailers/motorcycle-trailers/aluminum-motorcycle

  30. I like it...If it actually happens I'll go. On a side note I'd like to know what the left does for a living. They have left wing zealots to fund these events and ever sometimes pay people to attend. Most pro gun people actually work for a living and weekday events may be tough to attend. Do leftists not work or if they do do they just say the hell with it? And then if the employer says something are they called racist or baby killers? I'm serious...I'd like to know. David is or course right. Standing by and complaining does nothing. I guess the right needs more "community organizers". There must be a class in college for this right? Something needs to happen because there is no discussing things with a turnip. Others said we may end up stripped of our Second Amendment rights down the road but one thing is for sure. It ain't gonna be pretty.

  33. I for one firmly believe the purpose and scope of the 2nd amendment is to act as a leash on government, and ensuring the populace has the means, and capability, to defend their freedom against a government who's grown too big for it's britches! If one knows even a smattering of history, then you know it ain't about deer rifles, and if you're paying attention to the news today, you know it's as appropriate as ever!

  34. That is exactly why all of my grandchildren are home schooled. They don't need to learn all that trash they teach kids in school these days. My Daughter In Law got her degree to teach so she holds class for all the school age grand children and is actually paid by 4 other families to have her teach their children. She has been doing this about 10 years now and goes back every 2 years to renew her teaching degree. None of my grand children plan on going to college anyway but will do like their parents did and go to a Trade School and earn a trade working with their hands and brains. On the other side of the family on daughter side my oldest grandson got his teaching degree and he is doing the teaching on that side with grand children and he also is teaching 7 children from 5 other homes and being paid for teaching them. He just went and renewed his teaching degree last month. If it is as all possible Home Schooling is best these days..............IMHO

  36. If any one has a curiosity to scratch a UFO itch, an outstanding investigative work that reads quickly is David Jacobs PHD "The Threat" . Jacobs is the only professor to have taught college credit curriculum on the UFO phenomenon. The stories he has extracted via hypnosis in The Threat lead you down a road that reads Sci Fi , but grounded in multiple case similarity with folks not even vaguely associated with each other. Jacobs latest book "Walking Among Us" drags on and on threw the middle with to much incidental detail. But in the end ties it all up with the meat & potatos of what appears to be going on with the whole abduction scenario. What makes Walking Among Us rather intriguing to me, is in it, it describes a specific procedure used by Aliens on abductees that sparked a memory of something that happened to me over forty years ago. Pretty dang freaky... something defiantly going on that may affect us all in this stranger than fiction read. We'v all heard about the Anti Crist. Im about convinced this last man standing power broker may very well have his roots from else where. JMO!

  37. Here's a tip that some posters might not know. You can go to your local public library online. In my case, it's https://library.nashville.org and get a library card for your local branch library. Or, go to your local branch and get a library card. Then, you can set up an account online. You can see if a book is in stock at your branch or you can download an ebook or an audiobook (assuming there is an audio version) to your laptop or your smartphone. If the book you want is already checked out, you can put yourself on the wait list to be notified by email when it is available. You can get recent best sellers this way, but you might have to wait a month or so. I use the OverDrive app on my Android phone to download ebooks and audiobooks from the library. I use the Smart AudioBook Player to play the audiobooks because it has slightly better controls than the Overdrive app. (I have to set the folder so the Smart AudioBook Player can find the audiobook files in OverDrive.) I read the ebooks on my Kindle app or on OverDrive. Occasionally, I will download free audiobooks from LibriVox using the LibriVox app. I also have an Audible.com account. It's free for 30 days and then $14.95/month. If you cancel the free 30 day trial before you get billed, it will ask you why you're cancelling. Tell them it's too expensive and you'll get an offer to sign up for 3 months for $8.95/month. If you don't like a book you can return it for a free credit for another audiobook. So far, I've listened to about 6 books and only had to make two $8.95 payments. Audiobooks are great for tasks like mowing lawns or driving long distances or just doing mindless tasks around the house. A typical audiobook is 12-13 hours long. Oh, one more thing. If you search online before you set up your free 30 day trial on Audible, you can find a coupon to get 2 credits (books) instead of just one in the regular free trial.
