  1. While searching through the many suggestions here, Amazon popped this poster storage tube up. At $20 it was just what I was looking for. It just got here and is great! I'll probably fill a small camera bag with extra ammo and attach it to the shoulder strap. All I need now is a Bernie Sanders sticker to remove any doubt that there is anything of value inside. Now you see it Now you don't

  2. I have had bad luck with the grass stand on my newly constructed back yard shooting range. We had to leave shortly after I finished the grass sowing and we have had 4 weeks of 90+ degree days without any rain at all. We got 1/2 inch of rain the day after I sowed the seed and not one sprinkle afterwards. The grass sprouted with a good stand then perished in the hot dry days to follow. Only have a very light bit of grass left. My sister gave up her fight with cancer 3 weeks ago and when we were called we left immediately for Sebring Fla, and only got 2/3 of the way down there before she passed. She was my first sibling that left our family. I still have 2 more sisters, one older(78) and one younger(69) than I. Death is hard, but one simply must be prepared for it, however those left behind have a hard time afterwards. She is not suffering any longer. Cancer can be very bad for quiet a while. Went out yesterday and resewed some of the spots that had nothing on them. Got so hot I had to quit at noon(99 yesterday afternoon). Doing some more sowing this morning and put some fertilizer over the area also. Expecting rain Sunday(70%) and Monday (60%). Also expecting fall like temps for a while. We have had 30 days of above 90 temps last month with yesterdays afternoons 99 degree temp. I will water, with a sprinkler, it if need be. We decided to visit our daughter and grandson in Jacksonville Beach/Ponta Vedra Fla area, and youngest daughter/husband and 2 grand children, in Mt Pleasant S Carolina on the way back from Florida. Hope I can get some more grass growing before real cold temps this fall. Believe my shooting range will be a nice thing in the future. Ordered me some stands and am ordering some cardboard humanoid targets from a address I got off the internet this morning. Hope all of you have a good day. Edited to add; Going to take a friends advice, and get me a 55 gallon barrel, with a lid, to put my tape/ targets and supplies so I will not be forced to lug all that stuff to the range every time me and sweetie uses it.

  3. Social security is nothing but an onerous farce in my opinion. I do not count on ever seeing a penny of it. My employer will pay me roughly half my salary once I reach 30 years of service. They will also provide health insurance at that point. I have to pay 20 percent as I do now.

  6. We have entered that era where "someone has to pay". We can't hold the shooter accountable so the hotel is easy to blame. This seems ridiculous. In order to actually prevent this the hotel would have needed TSA level security 24/7, at every entrance. Even then it's not a guarantee. You will see more corporations come out in support of gun control as a result of this. Not because they care about people, but because they don't want to deal with payouts like this.

  7. I'm not diminishing the fact that the man lost his life, he is the victim no doubt about it, or am I advocating for her to be given a pass. But it seems to me that some of you seem to be overly harsh on her for no other reason than she was a cop.

  9. Sturgill Simpson on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast relayed his home invasion/burglary experience from earlier this year at his Nashville home and how the follow on events affected him. *Language warning as Sturgill is a fan of F-bombs* There is a lot to chew on here.

  14. Greg that is fantastic. I'm thinking it is due to good judgement, planning and sticking to a plan. I am very happy for you. You ask for guidance? One thing I was told was to have your part time job or volunteer work going for 6 months to a year before you do the final good by. I was told not to due the typical " I am gonna take a month of then look for a job" thing. I hope this helps and nice to hear sticking to a plan pays off. Morgan88

  15. I'm a long ways behind you but I hope you pull it off. Good on you for saving while so many others are not. Only a handful of my 30 year old friends seem to understand it.

  16. So you basically have a pension. Take it if you have the reserves built up not only for sustenance, but catastrophes, and go work at Home Depot or something like that part time if you get bored.

  17. If you retire before 50, at 50, or whenever, what are your plans for health insurance?

  18. Not early per se, but when I retired from the military, after a foreign assignment, I was home for about three months and it drove me a bit stir crazy. Same thing happened a few years later when we had a contract issue and I lost my job, I just had to get a job to get out of the house. Though I tried to get myself into my hobbies, they just weren't the same as having a job. My plans are still to retire as soon as I can get SS, but I may not if I still feel the same as I did those two times when it comes time.

  21. They do excellent in full sun after they are more than 1 year old, it’s hard to start them from seeds, or much harder than digging up a already established sapling2-3 ft tall. Supposed to have more than 1 for pollination, I have heard they need to be unrelated also. When you find a thicket of them, when you start digging you will see that generally they propagate from root runner instead of seeds. I get 30+ lbs of fruit from my tree, except for this year it didn’t have very many.

  22. This is similar to my interpretation of that statement. The way I interpreted it was that it was simply a judgment on himself. He determined for himself that the burglar wasn’t a threat, at that moment he was left with a decision. He found himself in a position where he could have shot someone, but he didn’t have to. And by choosing not to shoot that person even know he knew he could have and been legally covered, he learned something about himself.

  23. I read a couple articles but couldn't find anything that clarified what MGM's responsibility was in this. I don't agree with the logic of holding a business accountable for the actions of one of their customers, nor do I think that business are obligated to provide a safe environment for people within a bullet's radius of their grounds. I wonder if this will change the mentality of other businesses especially in more populated areas.

  27. Good point. The other difficulty with "when you realize you're lost..." is actually realizing/ admitting that you're lost. The situational awareness and humility required can make that difficult.

  29. 7.62x54r has plenty of horsepower, so unless that's something really odd like a thin varmint type jacket in a 200gr bullet those should be fine. It says "loaded in Russia" so I wouldn't be shocked if that's something the locals use for big game. I understand the caliber is popular there for that application.

  31. I would recommend spending a bit of time on YouTube listening to him. There is a whole movement in country music that pays respect to classic country music, and you don't hear any of it on the radio. His most recent album is whacky and not to my taste, but some of his previous albums such as, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, A Sailors Guide to Earth, and High Top Mountain are country to the core. I don't judge whether or not an artist is worthy based solely on them writing their own songs, but it's bonus points if you will. Sturgill writes his own stuff. Check this out

  32. I picked up some a few years ago at Reloader's Bench when I loaned a Mosin to a friend. I don't think a deer was ever taken with the rifle but my friend wound up using the rifle and ammo to dispatch 4 different horses and it did fine for that. I recall the RB had a single offering for non FMJ ammo, it would be worth stopping in and asking since you are local.

  34. I actually pointed out the fact that dozens of other people made the same mistake in going to the wrong apartment. I think she made a series of mistakes. But she still killed an innocent man and will likely be out on parole in 5. When you consider the fact that people are serving longer sentences for marijuana, she definitely got off easy.

  35. I can’t speak for anyone else, only myself. My biases are well known here and I won’t insult anyone by trying to deny them. That said, for me what this hinges on, and why I believe her sentence was unduly light is simple. Bothan Jean was sitting in his own home, on his own couch when a person who didn’t belong there (that she thought she did is irrelevant and not a mitigating factor in my eyes) and shot him to death. There was no accident here, only negligence. Her confusion in the moment does not alleviate her of her guilt. Her sentence should have been double what it was. Her being a cop is irrelevant to this view Where her being a cop does come into play for me is that with her training she especially should have been able to recognize her error before killing Bothan Jean. So while I don’t think that should make the sentencing harsher, it does make such a light sentence that much more egregious to me.

  36. While folks are busy feeling sorry for the woman who they think got unfairly overcharged, I feel like this is an opportune time to remind folks that the actual victim here was sitting on his own couch eating ice cream when someone who didn’t belong there walked in and shot him to death. Did she make some terrible mistakes, yep. That doesn’t lessen her responsibility for her actions any in this case. Texas is a state that’s pretty liberal with its laws regarding use of lethal force. You can use lethal force to defend property, not just a person in Texas. Yet, she was convicted of murder. Why? I believe it’s because ultimately she was in that man’s home. It was his castle, not hers, and she made conscious choice to take action to kill him. That admission of hers is what I believe sealed her fate, and rightfully so. If he had accidentally wandered into her home and she shot and killed him, it would have been tragic still, but no charges would have been filed because he would have been someplace he didn’t belong. You can find yourself in a terrible situation through accident and errors in judgement, and still be 100% responsible. In this case she did, and she is.

  38. I had exactly the same thought. Very thoughtful, he knew the rules and the consequences and made a good decision. Thankfully he wasnt forced to make the other choice. I'd feel compelled to visit the guy in prison and make an effort to get to know him. He's got a great opportunity to have a huge positive impact and turn a life around.

  41. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned (I couldn't find it here) but Range USA in Memphis will reopen with a new name and new owners. Jay Hill of Classic Arms and Ben Ferguson have invested in the site and plan to open the range this Friday September 27th. I hope to get over there soon to see it. If this has already been posted somewhere, I'm sorry.

  44. About two weeks ago, we lost @Ratfink. I don't want to disclose any of his personal details, anything he had relayed to me over the previous few months, or any suspected causes of his demise. I simply want to honor him. He was only 35. He had served in the Navy on the USS Spruance and USS The Sullivans. He was an Electronics Warfare Specialist and Cryptologist with three tours of duty. He was actually the sole reason I joined TGO back in 2012. Somehow, via Google, I found a classifieds ad on TGO created by him advertising a Ruger Security Six. I ended up meeting him that time and a few other times. Overall, for the previous ~7 years, I considered him a standup guy and a friend. I didn't really know him very well. However, due to complications regarding a recent transaction on TGO, I spent a lot of time talking to him via text and phone. It saddens me deeply to have found this out this morning. I wish I could have gotten to know him better over the years. Never take for granted what you have and when you have it. You never know when you might not have it anymore.
