  1. Reloading 9mm does not make sense, since it is so cheap and plentiful. That is unless you desire a specialized load that isn't readily available. Where reloading comes into it's own with me is with oddball calibers and non standard loadings. I can buy 9mm as cheaply as I can load it. If it goes bang, it's good. I can save a LOT of money loading 41 Magnum, 257 Roberts, and 218 Bee for example. I can also recreate the old 38/44 loads not available for purchase today. I can load walnut hull media for shooting carpenter bees. I can do all manner of experimentation not available in commercial offerings, such as a 110 grain powder puff load for a 30-30. Reloading has it's place, and isn't for everyone. I do believe you are correct that fewer and fewer people are doing it.

  3. quick update, and I really appreciate the guys who posted here as well as a couple PMs from others that I received - I didn't realize I had so many excellent choices. I went with Wilson Taxidermy in Franklin. I just got the mounts back, and I was extremely pleased with entire experience. Really nice guys, offered me lots of options & ideas. Thanks!

  4. It was David Mosley. I was actually dealing with his wife, but she gave me their card. I mentioned to her how all the reloading guys quit going to shows. She said that they were getting back into it and intended to regularly start making the rounds. Of course this was at Germantown where the powers that be have decided that this was the last show to be held there. However, we did talk about Jackson and both are confidant that RK will find a new venue in the Memphis area.

  5. Merry Christmas to all my TGO brothers and friends. May peace and happiness follow you daily. Thank you, Mac, for your thoughts and prayers for us all. Thank you, David, for herding this band of cats into a meaningful and fun group. I know many here have had much harder times than I and my family this year, but it is still good to know that others think of you. From an old sinner, May God Bless and keep us all. And I ask that He, and all of us, keep our dedicated heroes...servicemen and women around this world; the Police in all forms, the first responders, the Doctors and nurses; and the craziest and sometimes least remembered of all...the firefighters...those who run into fires to get us out...in our prayers daily. Amen.

  7. I hope each of you find yourselves surrounded by those you love, and that this time is a time of peace and joy. I know for some of you that this is a tough time of year. Some of you are in this thread. The loss of those we’ve loved is tough. Know that I remember you, and have kept you in my prayers too. I wish each of you a Merry Christmas.

  8. It is a hair after midnight as I sit typing this. My family are all asleep, the lights are off save for the soft warm glow of the Christmas lights strung across our fireplace mantle and those wrapped around the Christmas tree across the room. The only sound in the house is that of my own typing on this laptop and a Christmas piano playlist on Spotify softly piped through the speakers nearby. The day before Christmas is officially here and it seems as though, as usual, things have only slowed down enough in the last few days for me to really immerse myself in the sights and sounds of the season. Time to reflect, to absorb, to ponder, and to enjoy. I sure do miss the carefree years of childhood when every moment from Thanksgiving onward built toward a crescendo of CHRISTMAS! Every year I swear to myself that I will slow down earlier and enjoy it more, sooner. Work never willingly lets me, although I have learned to set boundaries and force it to. I'm still not good at it. I need to do better. I suspect many of you reading this can relate. But, lest I sound too dour, I am thankful that I am here, in this moment, enjoying and reflecting and savoring. I did hit the pause button earlier than I have in the past, and gave myself a reprieve for a few days. I've taken my oldest daughter (the oldest at home, at least) with me on a few carefree and whimsical errands to just spend time together and get her excited about the holidays. I've slowed to lie on the floor in our front room and stare out the front door with my 2-year old son at the Christmas lights decorating the house. I've made a few Kentucky Mules to drink and, in the name of the Scientific Method, tried them in varying mixtures as I work to perfect the art. I don't think I've got them right just yet. More work is to be done. For science. I've also served additional rotations on the safety team at my church this season, in an attempt to give back just a little toward a debt that I could never truly repay. It has allowed me more time around people enjoying the holidays, and more Merry Christmas'es than I might have exchanged with strangers otherwise. If I could have just one wish for all of you here on TGO it would be simply for more time for each of you to slow down and enjoy the season, even if that enjoyment only means a quiet refrain between the busyness of 2019 and the busyness of 2020. I hope that each of you finds time over the next few days to spend Christmas the way that you like. Whether that is in the company of friends and family, or serving others, or just quietly but happily alone reflecting on the goodness that still abounds in this world if you look for it. If you are on duty somewhere this Christmas, please accept my thanks. Whether it be in public safety or a 24/7 profession of some other sort that doesn't take breaks, whatever it is you're doing matters to someone - perhaps to all of us. Thank you for doing it. I hope that you have some moment of rest and relaxation in there somewhere. Merry Christmas, TGO! For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

  12. Guess the question is what is midsize? Acreage being cheaper with larger sections, you have to probably spend more than the average person would in today's market. Around here, only developers are buying big pieces in the 1 to 3 million range to get acreage at lower cost. Smaller sections are being sold by speculators around here. @ 30 mins out. Ranges from 4k to 7k on the low end to 10k an acre depending on desirability and amount purchased. Up to 10k - 20k for premium smaller lots (less than 5 acres). I figure I dont know enough to buy land and knowing the developers and speculators already snapped up all the reasonable prices, whats left if seems sketchy up to 45 minutes away. Middle TN over 1 hour out seems to have some good value. But then you are back to having to get resources and any improvements. That's where you need Dave's kinda money again Since that's not me, back to waiting for a market correction.

  15. Personal Opinion Coming. Be warned. Ok...I've owned the Firefly and the Mosquito. Both absolute pieces of junk. Again...jmo. Poor appearance and fit. Misfeeds, prone to jams. Inaccurate as hell. Seemed like cheap "pot-metal" construction. Found a sucker walking around in a Mufreesboro show about 8 years ago who wanted them. I parted happily and took his cash. Almost felt sorry for him. Yes, I did tell him my experiences with them, but he said that he was a 22 "expert" and could fix anything wrong with them. I got 350 for both, which was less than I had in the trade I'd origionally made to get them. Didn't care. Wanted them gone. Gave him a number to call if he had concerns and actually gave a week to give his money back. I never will try to cheat anyone. I've been lied to on pistols and I will not do it to make a sale. Period. I was honest in my thoughts and wanted him to know what I was selling. I never heard from him, so maybe he did "fix" them. I now own 2 GSG 22 pistols with threaded barrels. They function well, though neither like the Thunderbolt ammo, and are reliable and fun to shoot. One is a full size and the other a commander. Reasonable accurate. Meaning they are better than I'm capable of. lol I have about 400 in both of them and not concerned about it. Just fun little 22s.

  17. Y'all may not have noticed the story or follow the links that discussed the history. The last 10 years its been a drone training facility, before that there wasnt an airfield or roads to link the cleared areas where they added buildings. If you look at the satellite image you can see how they spoked out. The linked roads were to both working sites and mock building structures (stacked storage containers) that drone pilots in training would take practice runs on. May well have been owned by paper companies years before, but probably just forested area. Looks like it hasnt been stripped for quite some time. Wish all acreage was that cheap! Great for hunting, but man would it be expensive to develop. Historical info indicted the base power was supplied by on-site generators, that I guess they did not leave behind. Not for a paltry 9 million. "https://www.google.com/maps/@35.1760093,-88.0220308,3694m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!7m1!2e1"

  18. Just my opinion, but I think its just that its lost its popularity. Of course, the cost argument continues, but when I looked at it, it wasn’t much (if any) of a cost saving option. The quality and repeatability argument doesn't make much sense to me either, modern manufacturing techniques and inspection can produce ammunition far more consistent than in the past.. There are people doing everything they can to increase the manufacturing costs of ammo. They will do the same to reloaders supplies. I think it will always be available. But like many things, you won’t be able to run down to your local store and stock up; you will have to order.

  20. Since it’s got more than one barrel, it falls under the definition of “volley fire” instead of a machine gun. While I’m a generally supportive of projects like this - just for fun from an engineering standpoint - I question whether poking the ATF with a stick is a good idea in our current climate.

  22. Last gun show I went to there was a reloading vendor. First time I've seen one at a gun show in a couple of years. I bought 5000 primers just because. There used to be several of them at every show and that's where I would stock up on powder and primers. Now you hardly ever see them. The powders that I tend to use a lot, I often buy the 4 lb can. One pounders just don't seem to last very long. Bass Pro here does sell reloading supplies. But its all small amounts. 1 lb cans of powder and 100 count boxes of bullets and primers. Rarely do they have more than one of each. You gotta grab those supplies when you can get 'em and stock up.

  23. This thing has been discussed on several different forums. I don't remember the question of legality ever coming up. The general consensus seems to be that its just ugly, stupid and useless. I tend to agree.

  24. the price is posted in the link. Its on sale! I dont think you have to win the lotto, from Davids posted pics of toys, I am sure he'll cover the first 8 million or so. Decided military style lookouts and decor. Similar to the towers they put up around hardended ordinance bunkers on bases. No fuel tanks, so great thing is no messy toxic clean up. Not form that anyway.

  28. I've shot the Piney Mountain .22 tracers. They work very well. Only trace for about 100 to 150 yards, but how far are you shooting .22 anyway? Tracers do not cause fouling or unreliability. They are expensive for .22 ammo, but lots of fun.

  30. I wanted a QD rail that could take a pounding with heavy optic if need be so I built this to my own spec. This is on a early CIA thumb hole Imbel that I picked up off GB. Now, its reconfigured the way I want it! The blank and the starter..... zero tolerance recoil plate a cap to be welded over the stud extension yet. All friction fit The rear sight peep slide will be mod-ed into rear lock down latch over the 2 extensions. Good thing the bolt cover top radius is exactly a 1/2" ball nose cut under the base. I guess this is one of those challenges that I had to sink my imagination into. That's the rear base in the raw. now the front hand guard is Israeli Light Rifle with a custom fabed accessory rail I cobbed out of a cheap China AR handguard. The gas tube rings are made from aluminum bar stock & milled to fit the hollow channel under the rail. Also, I fit a steel front end to recoil up against the steel vented hand guard. Now for the finished unit with a fabed up L1A1 flip up peep made to fit the rail that is windage adjustable. Rear base lock in open position. Locked up rock solid... I wanted a flip out handle that could be popped out with the flick of a finger or edge of the hand so I welded the handle locking edge out quite a bit more so it sticks out just enough to get at easy but still lives nicely in an over stuffed safe. The scope base/cover slides off & on the receiver to perfect zero no matter what. The Century Imbel Franken is exactly what I want built over a first gen DSA Alloy lower. Now it can keep my SAR48 company!

  31. Saturday, December 21, 2019 PayPal has acknowledged that we have discovered a new bug in their payment system related to automatically renewing subscriptions. They are working to resolve the problem and do not anticipate that we, or you, will be required to take any action to correct it. Here's what you need to know: This bug began affecting us toward the end of November and has continued since. It only affects those members who have chosen to establish a "Billing Agreement" with us through PayPal. It does not affect anyone who uses Stripe to pay, or uses a non-recurring PayPal purchase. As soon as PayPal lets me know that it is fixed, I will update this post and remove most of it so that people aren't confused. UNTIL THEN... If you notice that your subscription renewed on PayPal but did not renew here, let me know via a Private Message. Include the date on which your PayPal transaction occurred, if you know. If you don't, no worries - I can find it, it just takes a bit longer. Please give me a few days to get your account squared away manually. I am trying to check TGO daily until they get this fixed, but it may be slower during the holidays. Thanks for your patience! --David

  32. I have enabled a new feature in our software that essentially grants everyone limited moderator powers when it comes to reporting content that goes against our community guidelines. This new feature is "Auto Moderation" and is currently set so that if TWO OR MORE PEOPLE report content that falls into one of the following categories... Spam Abusive Content Non-Benefactor Advertising Benefactor Posting in the Wrong Area The content will be automatically hidden until a moderator has a chance to address it. This allows us to keep TGO clean and acknowledges the facts that our best defense has long been our members and that our tireless, hard-working, and insanely dedicated team of volunteer moderators can't be everywhere at once and definitely can't be online 24/7. I will tweak the automation that makes this work behind the scenes to ensure that it isn't used unfairly.
