  1. As the security chief for my old church I had the pastor do a security awareness month covering various topics. One topic was telling folks that if they saw someone present a gun in the church then to get down below the oak pews and let the security team handle the situation. He pointed out that the pews offered better protection than standing up and trying to run. Will everyone do that under stress? Probably not, but it would certainly cut down on the number of people blocking a response.

  2. They want to stay in power, so they will be careful to not get into a direct war with the US. They will still train and arm proxies, of that you can be sure but no direct action. The populace is getting mighty tired of shortages and the government, so it will not take much to have their "Arab Spring" moment, TPTB know this and will walk that fine line.

  4. I hope this is the correct way to do this as I am new to posting in any forum much less this one. I am a long time resident of the state of Tennessee and am a retired nuclear power instrument tech. I am partially disabled and I don't get out much except for doctor visits, grocery shopping, and to go to the range and shoot my FN handgun. I have been interested in firearms since I was child and have owned many types of firearms. My main interest now is handguns and I thought it would be fun to join a forum.

  7. Its been decades since my dad has shot anything. And I mean anything (last time he went shooting, I wasnt even alive). I actually found out he bought a norinco sks and brought it with him. Turned out, hes a good shot. Turned out, he never cleaned the cosmoline out of the sks. How did I find this out? My ak and ar got covered in brown ####, and I saw it dripping from the sks as he was shooting it (once I noticed the everything being covered in brown). Overall, a good weekend. I think I might get him to get a glock. (He didnt like my 1911 )

  9. I handload as well and it's definitely worth the time to me. I don't cast but probably should. (A group of us used to but that seems to be on a protracted hiatus...sadly.) But I enjoy handloading and load development. And if your are primarily shooting revolvers (as I have the past 8-9 months) handloading is definitely cost effective. I've put at least 1500 rounds through the LCR .38 I purchased on TGO last April. I couldn't afford to do that otherwise. I generally purchase bulk plated or jacketed 9mm, .380 and .38 bullets during Black Friday sales and that keeps my price per round at around $0.12 - $0.13 each.

  10. A quick read on how Soleimani let a perfect mix of complacency and ego push operational security to the wayside when it came to his travels. https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2020/01/qods-force-commander-soleimanis-carelessness-put-him-in-the-u-s-militarys-crosshairs.php The whole site is great to read if you care about the nuances of what we're doing in the Middle East. It's been bookmarked on my browser since my old boss discovered it in 2007 (we used it before and while in Iraq).

  12. The rockets probably didn't have any warheads in them, they just did not cause enough damage to of had any significant amount of payload. They also did not hit anything of tactical value, and they warned enough people to make sure we got the word before the strike; so this was a feint the whole way.
    1 point
  13. I disagree. They have gone for decades killing our people and our pansy presidents do nothing about it. Now they expected the same with Trump but he disappointed them with a high-value strike. That caught them off guard. I think Trump has drawn a line at taking American lives - even if they are contractors - and the Iranians now know that he means it. Sure, they'll continue to shoot down drones and such, but I think they'll be cautious of taking any more American lives.

  14. No matter how much good comes out of a situation like this church shooting, dem's won't speak of anything positive, only the prog/soc/comm agenda. Defense of one's self, family, friends, innocents doesn't fit their agenda which is total disarmament.

  17. No, I don't think there is much to worry about concerning a war. If Iran does something stupid, (and they may) the military will retaliate with swift force I'm sure. But, I don't see us doing anything before them.

  18. I don't understand why anyone would open carry into a business or in public. Why would you give up the tactical advantage of letting others know that you are armed? Why would you want to be identified as the first person a bad guy would shoot? Why would you want to be hassled and waste time talking to someone about whether or not you had a HCP?
    1 point
  19. Overthinking it. In a crowded room, there will be a "bubble" of people that have direct knowledge of events as they transpire. If the shooter had not been taken out as fast as he was, there would have been enough armed people that could identify and challenge the shooter. There is always a chance of friendly fire, no doubt, but what is the alternative, giving free rein to a shooter while LEO shows up and has the same exact friendly fire scenario too?

  21. Given the targets they chose, the amped up rhetoric for domestic consumption...I think the Iranians are trying to save some pride for the moment while avoiding direct confrontation. Overt acts with conventional military resources aren't their strong suit, so my bet is they'll regroup and go back to the more familiar "terrorist" style efforts for any further retailitory moves that could also just be an extension of efforts already underway. So, for everyone hoping to see B-2 and cruise missle footage...sorry. I guess consult a doctor if your war boner doesn't go away after four hours.

  23. Somebody is playing with somebody. Zero casualties. Were they trying to miss? Did they have advanced warning and an evacuation? I don't think Iran is stupid enough to go toe to toe with us. We licked Iraq's ass in a couple of weeks with very few casualties. All the casualties came from the nation building BS, which Trump says he isn't gonna do.

Ha.... like the nearly year Saddam had to get his WMD's flown to Syria. I like his tweets tho I never bother reading anything on twitter. I could care less.... Litmus test is if it bothers a lib, its got to be good. Obviously Trump is not quite 100 percent right in the head but that is exactly who you need to combat the explosion of Liberalism in the US. 27. And we never will by those terms. We won the Afghan War (though war is a bit of a misnomer for how intense it was) somewhere between July - December 2002 after we finished chasing the last vestiges of Al Qaeda and the Taliban out of their fallback areas. Everything after that has been the Afghan Counterinsurgency/Occupation/Peacekeeping conglomeration that got refreshed with every new commander who thought it would represent the "turning point" or something to that effect. Forget that in that country foreigners are treated like a body fights off a virus, no matter how long it takes. It's all these good intention missions that get us into long term problems. If we'd just stick to the reasons and execution of war as it's supposed to be done in a judicious manner, we'd be a lot better off.

  28. So I went to the range at lunch and put about 50 rounds through my 1911 and 50 through my M&P Shield 45 and about 31 through my M&P Shield 9 (I only had what was in my full mags). The Shield 45 did not have as sharp a recoil as the Shield 9, but it was not as deep (for lack of a better word) a recoil as the 1911. I need to shoot both Shields side by side more to get a better opinion, but I already think I like the 45 more than the 9. I still like my 1911 the best. I can keep a decent grouping in the center and further out with it. I still pull down and left with both Shields (not as bad with the 45). That is a different topic, but I wonder what I am doing different. The trigger is definitely different between a 1911 and a striker fired pistol. That and the weight. It makes me wonder if that is the cause. Sometimes I just aim high and right.

  29. How many times will Islamic countries in the Middle East and Western Asia have to tell us explicitly, and in no uncertain terms, that they do not want us mucking about in their internal affairs and conflicts with other Muslim countries before WE get a clue? Remember, the Iranian government that exists today does so because we deposed a democratically elected president who was not keen to ally with the US in favor of a brutal dictator who was. Then we kept him in power for over two decades. Then when the people of Iran had enough, we teamed up with the brutal dictator next door to support him in waging war against the Iranians for the next decade. Maybe, just maybe, the Iraqi parliament voting to expel the US is an opportunity. An opportunity to respect the wishes of a sovereign nation with regards to how they wish to conduct their own affairs and an opportunity to end a war that should never have been begun in the first place. I actually agree with your view on how to prosecute war. It should be terrible, and horrible and recognized as the last thing anyone wants. Not trying to wage it “humanely” is actually the most humane way to go about it because it should be a better deterrent. At the same time, not mucking about in other folks’s business is also another great way to not get drawn into wars as well. I don’t pretend to be an expert ME culture or politics, but sometimes even if you don’t exactly know the right way to go about something, it is still blindingly obvious that what you are doing is wrong. Our entire approach to the ME is wrong. From occupying Iraq, to antagonizing Iran, to allying with the KSA we’re just plain doing it wrong. It’s Not just ok to recognize that and move towards correcting those mistakes, I think it’s the right thing to do.

  30. I moved here (I live in Jefferson City) from Massachusetts in September. Not a lark, my wife and I spent a year and a half choosing where to go, eastern Tennessee was the choice for MANY reasons. We're glad we're here, we're not going anywhere. I told her "when I die, have me cremated and sprinkled on the hill in back." Anyway... I know people personally that now live in Virginia. One of them has been going to "Lobby Day" for years. She's active politically and articulate, and when she tells me they're concerned about what will happen when the legislators come back I believe her. Libs WILL create laws and enforce them as they see fit, regardless of constitutionality. It takes YEARS to get a case to SCOTUS, even assuming they decide to hear it. In MA the federal assault weapon ban never sunsetted, MA copies and pasted it and made it state law. For years we just lived with it. Then on 7/20/16 our (theirs now!) Attorney General "reinterpreted the law and decided that "copies" or "substantially similar" firearms were not to be sold or possessed and were felonies. Those in possession were essentially "felons in waiting". Gun shops statewide stopped selling them. Private sales became expensive, a "pre 7/20 ban" AR essentially sold at a premium. There were no prosecutions, but it became increasingly difficult to buy a rifle. Many vendors won't ship ANYTHING to MA. Hats, tshirts, nada. Forget about complete or even 80% lowers. Some companies won't ship SPRINGS. So it happens, burying your head in the sand almost guarantees it will. Once the law is in place fighting it becomes harder and more expensive. This #### needs to be stopped BEFORE it happens, not "fixed" later. Who would have thought 20 years ago we'd be arguing about bathrooms and wedding cakes? We are now. You think that the landscape will be recognizable 20 years from now? Lol. Go watch "Idiocracy". Virginia is the canary in the coal mine.

  31. Once I shoot my M&P Shield 45, I will give an opinion. To date, I have only shot 45acp through a full size 1911 (I’ve had two). I too am curious how the lighter frame, shorter barrel will be as compared to a full frame 1911. Hitting the range tomorrow so I will let you know.

  32. My view is that we have this problem with Iran today because Carter and Reagan didn't have the stones to take care of them in either 1979 or 1983. I understood Carter's inaction because he was a known pansy. I did NOT expect Reagan to allow the deaths of so many of my brother Marines, soldiers, and sailors to go unanswered. It's why I get annoyed to see people lift him up as a great president. Had we counter-struck 10 fold back to Iran with cruise missiles they would not be still killing our people today whether directly or indirectly. Will this lead us to war? I am no more of a prophet than anyone else. Iran thinks Russia will protect them but that didn't work out too well for other countries Russia has backed. I don't recall Russia getting directly engaged in any conflict with the US. Selling arms and sending advisers, sure. While I am glad that the US has taken out this a-hole it still doesn't make up for the thousands of killed and maimed at the hands of the Iranians. I think it's a foregone conclusion that Iran will strike back making it more important for the US to strike again even harder. Eventually, they'll either die or learn their lesson.

  33. I have a friend buried in Arlington who lost her life when an EFP hit the Buffalo vehicle she was riding in as the medic on a route clearing mission with engineers, so I had a bit of personal interest while reading we smoked "Haji Qassem". My first thought at this was "holy ####", and I'm willing to say it was a happy feeling. This guy was as important as can be to Iran's foreign policy aims, and the stories about him probably undersell how good at his job he was. Both the Bush and Obama administrations didn't think it was worth the predicted backlash to kill Soleimani, even though he was commanding a very effective effort against US interests all across the Middle East. It became a "cost of doing business" assessment that he would have a role in the battle-space. President Trump clearly overcame any hesitations about escalation, which is seemingly at odds with a guy who wants to avoid being sucked into more war without cause (a policy I wholeheartedly approve of). This guy flew into Baghdad airport on the regular, and probably had a diplomatic passport getting stamped to boot. He could have driven from Iran to the Israeli border in an SUV and nobody would have dared make a move on him...he was that gangsta. Until now. I give the President a lot of credit for that and my support, the storm it may bring be damned. A bit of paranoia is a good thing for bad guys to have when they cross the lines that Soleimani lived across. So, I'm quite glad he's dead, because as much as "next man up" will apply to the organization he led, it's very unlikely anyone else will do the job as well as he did, for lack of reputation in dealing with matters requiring personal persuasion if nothing else. While I'm happy that we exercised a model of "we own escalation" as I saw one article put it, the risk could get cashed in anytime. Soleimani was considered a "living martyr" before he became a dead martyr, so he was prepared to die for his cause, and that kind of reputation has a purpose in Iran. Anyone that says they know what's coming next, aside from Iran doing something to retaliate, is full of it; the calculation models are being re-written...in the dark. This is the biggest single move escalation since the embassy was taken in 1979, and we're in some uncharted territory vis a vis how we deal with Iran, and how they deal with us. One of the best things from this is the Shia government in Iraq is pissed. They were always an impediment to any serious efforts targeting Shia forces, and the Quds Force in Iraq. Basically they loved how the US would help them keep the Sunni's in check, and uncomfortable with anything us taking on Shia forces that weren't on "their side" (tribal spats and the like). If they revoke the authorization for us to be in their country, I'd take that any day of the week as a stand alone event. Getting to punch Soleimani's martyr card on top of that is just a bonus, like free pie day O'Charley's. All that exuberance aside...everything we killed Soleimani for was from a tit-for-tat with Iran ever since we orchestrated political changes in their country, and they responded with an Islamic revolution. From the Iraq-Iran war, to the Iraqi occupation, they had their reasons for hating us and letting Soleimani operate in a model of what they deem "resistance". So, when you think of this, be content someone very bad and dangerous is dead, be very grateful that our forces can project this kind of power on demand, but also remember that everything leading up to it came from our heavy handed ways in the region because we saw a need to be there and be dominant. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's a good or bad way to conduct foreign policy on a gains/loss basis.

  36. It is my opinion if a church is going to have a safety team, the other church goers should be talked to also(train the audience). These church goers, most of them, ducked down, which is a good thing. It gave a clearer sight picture of the shooter plus got themselves out of the line of sight (fire) of the security team and shooter. After training our safety team, at my church, you would be surprised how many people did not even know the street address of our church building. How can one call 911 and not even know the address. I had 2 guys that were designated 911 callers on our team. My idea for 2 was one would be there on the day we needed him. This incident took place over a 6 second time period. How many of us would be ready and have lethal shots fired that quick. Common guys, you can't argue with success. True some of the guys made mistakes by, what appeared to be muzzling innocent church goers, but it has been my experience, we don't really see the sight angels they were looking at from one camera angle. Those "volunteers" did great in protecting their church family. It takes special men to go to the sound of gunfire, and apparently we see at least 6 men, mostly mature men, doing that. One can nit pick this to the death, but look at it for what it is. A sad day for these people, but the best training film in a church setting, that has ever been filmed and shown to the public in real time. Mr Wilson is to be commended for his excellent actions. Those two poor volunteers, at almost point blank range, suffered greatly and in reality had very little chance of success coming from behind the curve in their own defense. I told my members that most times, when you respond, you draw the perps attention away from his intended targets, to yourself, and you need to understand that fact. This shooter reacted to the two volunteers, and had to deal with them, before he could continue his original purpose, what ever that was. Mr Wilson hit him at the perfect time causing him to react and miss his next intended target. Guys, that is textbook on what a safety team is put in place for. Fighting, for sure gun fighting, is nasty business and not antiseptic. Our team never faced a deadly confrontation, but had to deal with 11 bad situations, one just like this guy coming in with the hoody on and causing a disturbance. Ours turned out to be non life threatening, but still it happened and had to be dealt with. This hoodie guy was the real deal. We need to be praying for these good people, and even for Mr Wilson, because most likely hew ill need those prayers in the future, while dealing with taking another's life, even though he was totally in the right. This won't happen until he has settled down and has to begin assessing his actions in the darkness of his thoughts. PTSD is very real even if you are right, to most, not all, but most. I say well done, for a very serious situation and the security team brought this awful situation to an quick end. It could have been much worse, even though it is bad. Edited to add: Mr Wilson will need to adjust because he will now begin to live with "The Mark of Cain Syndrome."

  38. Just my opinion, but I think its just that its lost its popularity. Of course, the cost argument continues, but when I looked at it, it wasn’t much (if any) of a cost saving option. The quality and repeatability argument doesn't make much sense to me either, modern manufacturing techniques and inspection can produce ammunition far more consistent than in the past.. There are people doing everything they can to increase the manufacturing costs of ammo. They will do the same to reloaders supplies. I think it will always be available. But like many things, you won’t be able to run down to your local store and stock up; you will have to order.

  40. Marlin and Henry both make excellent lever guns. I can't knock either one. However, I've always preferred the feel and handling of Winchesters. Especially the 16" Trapper Models. In .357, I'd highly recommend you look at the Rossi Model 92. Its a clone of the original Winchester Model 1892. Its a bit lighter and trimmer than the Model 94 and Marlins. It was originally designed for pistol caliber cartridges, so its a bit smoother and more reliable than other guns modified to shoot the shorter handgun rounds. These are currently made by Taurus and I've heard good things about them. I own a much older pre-safety Rossi 92 in .357 with a 16" barrel. Nothing fancy to look at as these older guns had somewhat plain finishes and wood. However, Its one of the slickest and fastest handling lever guns I've ever owned. I love it!

  41. They can ask whatever they like; they don’t need a law to ask. And the HCP holder can either comply or refuse and leave. They don’t need to be posted to ask someone carrying a gun to leave. They just have to be properly posted for the holder to be cited. In my opinion its better than posting. In checking, they found that the patron was not in compliance with the law; so he was carrying illegally.
