  1. Paramedics don't have any rights beyond what you or I have. That term is used far too loosely, and often enough to describe an encroachment on actual rights of the individual for the benefit of someone else. It's also a very singular thing to say paramedics when you could easily lump in police officers, grocery store cashiers, and ER nurses. Just how many people will claim a right to know, just because their job involves interaction with the public? I get that it would make their jobs safer and easier in some respects, but to what degree? They already wear gloves, and for the current time being, should be wearing surgical or N95 masks as part of their jobs. Past that, what does knowing if someone has tested positive for COVID-19 do for them? It doesn't relieve them of caring for that person, or any other aspect of how they would do the job, so "good to know" really isn't relevant to the performance of their duties, and it surely isn't a right.

  2. I finally got all my gongs, and targets, put together and on my range today. I put 1, 12" gong(chest size), 1, 8" gong, and 1, 4" gong on freestanding targets racks today. Also have 2 target stands that will take my cardboard man size cut outs on them. It was so wet that it took me 15 minutes to clean the mud off my sneakers. We have had so much rain as of late. Also had 3 days of frost, but the last day was real spotty. When we get some warmer dryer weather I will take out two large trees and move a little dirt and it will be totally ready to go. Been a lot of work for an old man. Mt wife, grandson and I have already shot several times before now, but am looking forward to shooting the gongs. Always like a little instant confirmation of hits on steel after shots. One gets that shooting steel. I hung them on a slight angle so the bullet splatter will be directed toward the ground, in front of the target, instead of coming back at the shooter. I actually had 2 different occasions where I fired my revolver and 9MM pistol and the bullet came back and brought blood on my shins, so it truly can happen. I had a wooden backstop and the bullet hit a nail head and ricoched back to where I was standing. Shouldn't have that problem with these targets. My old backstop rotted down 2 years ago so we have been having a hard time shooting. I got about 225.00 in all the supplies to put on the targets on the range. Bought most of it on big sales this spring. Should last me a lifetime. Told my sweetie that and she shamed me. Didn't want to hear it. I told her well, at 72, I am already on "Blessed Time" according to the Bible. She wasn't amused with that either. Looking forward to having a good place to fire my guns, and do some serious practice where I am not forced to stand in one place, and not be able to draw, move, and shoot with live ammo. The area in front of my dirt mound is very flat and smoothe, and is grassed well now. Just need a little tree removal, drying, and warmth. Edited to add; Purchased me an new Stihl Farm Boss chain saw last week for serious tree removal. We have several in my back lot that has blown down and needs removal.

  3. Draw the size and shape on a piece of paper...transfer it to a block of bronze and start grinding, filing, sanding and use a dremel tool as well. when finished I use a product to put a patina oi and there you have it.

  4. I meant in the performance of their jobs. Same as when people say cops have rights...they don't. They have authority society has codified on them for the performance of their duties, but those aren't rights, and we should never conflate the two. Since it's pandemic time, we seem to be venturing into this debate for paramedics. Same principles in my mind.

  6. That would be simple. Know what else is just as simple? The paramedics/cops:etc. asking folks if they have tested positive for Covid.

  7. What's good for the goose is good for the gander... release the names and addresses of all medical personnel who've been diagnosed with an infectious disease. I'd want to know if the person treating me was potentially contagious.

  11. The MG42 is a pretty cool piece. In the build, at least theres no piston arrangement to deal with. Im not familiar with building any of those. I took the easy way out and did an RPD / semi DSA rec. with a number of my own mods. Best thing to do is read everything here at the Guild on them if you haven't all ready. http://www.weaponsguild.com/forum/index.php?board=25.0 If it wasn't for the crematory, I'd have then put this in the box with me... LOL

  16. Exactly what I was thinking. I don't even see how this database is that useful. What additional precautions are they going to take that they are not already taking? A full hazmat suit? Also, why are we stopping it at police and medical staff. Using this logic, everyone should know who tests positive. What if I live in an apartment building and my neighbor has it. Shouldn't I have a right to know so I can avoid taking the elevator with them? Of course I don't agree but we've got to stop pretending police and EMS should get special treatment than the rest of us. Also, I'm not at all shocked by the people here who are not bothered by this. It has become extremely predictable.

  17. Viruses can mutate into different strains. Those types of viruses prevent the effectiveness of a vaccine. There have been conflicting reports as to COVID-19's ability to mutate. If it is indeed stable then a vaccine can work. If it mutates it could easily be like the flu only deadlier.

  21. Correct. What would have happened if all the food industry workers stayed home, or Truck Drivers, or whoever? These folks are making the same decisions First Responders are making; go to work, even though it’s a risk. BTW…. the HERO ACT isn’t about heroes. I started a thread about it in the politics section because I didn’t know if it was appropriate for here.

  22. It also just helps to know cars. Jaguar as a company name didn't exist until 45 which is also when they started using the leaping jag hood ornament. Prior to that, they were Swallow Sidecar Company and changed the name to SS Cars Limited when they switched to full time auto production. The SS Jaguar of the 30s was a model. Post WWII, SS had a very negative connotation and the Jaguar was extremely popular so they changed the name and rebranded themselves in 1945. Since the car in the picture is CLEARLY a pre-war car, it stands to reason that it CANNOT be a Jaguar since Jaguar didn't exist.

  27. HIPAA laws are largely misunderstood. Pretty narrow coverage scope, actually. Here’s a link that will tell you who is/is not a covered entity/individual under HIPAA: https://www.cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Administrative-Simplification/HIPAA-ACA/Downloads/CoveredEntitiesChart20160617.pdf And a link that explains where the exception fits: https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/covid-19-hipaa-and-first-responders-508.pdf I don’t like it, but it is, and has been legal.

  30. There is no denying that, to think otherwise is naive. It’s bad enough that private businesses do it for their own marketing and bottom line purposes as the examples you mentioned, it’s an entirely different thing when government harvests that information for their own purposes which are entirely different. I guess I’m the naive one thinking medical information was private. Perhaps patient confidentiality and HIPAA doesn’t mean what I always thought...unless It’s for the protection of government.

  32. 4Freedom: you might try looking into IT contractors. My older son has and is currently working for one. They work at various places under contract doing all sorts of IT stuff. My son was working at a Cummins turbo factory where everything from machines to inventory and shipping were all computer controlled. The factory where he was working got shut down by the virus. But he still has a job and is getting paid. His bosses tell him that as soon as they get another opening, he'll go back to work. Although it might be at a totally different place. A good contractor has openings in a wide range of skills. I'm sure the right one could find a place that fits your particular talents. BTW: check into state dept of education classes. They are low cost and readily available. My son has updated/ upgraded several of his computer certificates by taking night classes.

  35. It's cool seeing the score book. We should try to replicate the USMC qualification tests, and see how we score in comparison. Your grandfather almost made Expert. Standards for marksmanship in the USMC changed little between the wars and during WWII a Boot shot for record on the KD range at three distances: 500 yards: Ten rounds, slow fire, prone position 300 yards: Ten rounds, rapid fire, prone Five rounds, slow fire, kneeling Five rounds, slow fire, sitting Everyone hated the sitting position! 200 yards: Ten rounds, rapid fire, sitting Ten rounds, slow fire, off hand With five points awarded for each round a score of 250 points would be what was known as "The perfect possible", which was virtually impossible to reach due to the use of standard service rifles and old surplus ammunition leftover from WWI. Shoot 190 and you were a Marksman. Shoot 215 and you were a Sharpshooter. Expert meant shooting 225 or better. In those days the Corps paid extra for crack shots: A Sharpshooter received and additional $2 per month with an Expert receiving five extra bucks. Back in the early days of the war when a private was paid $21 per month this was HUGE money and Boots would bust their asses to qualify as at least a Sharpshooter. Even when pay was advanced to $51 per month that amount extra money (10% extra pay for Expert) was hardly small change.

  38. Conspiracy Theories, Coronavirus, TGO and YOU For as long as I can remember, TGO has never really provided "safe waters" for people who want to preach conspiracy theories and rile-up the masses. There are plenty of places for that sort of thing on the Internet and yes sometimes the conspiracy enthusiasts (or nuts, if you so prefer) are proven right in the end. But since there are so many other places for it and since we feel that the ravings of fringe believers tends to bring down the property value, we prefer that our members engage in discussions based in reality. Lately the moderators have begun removing posts fanning the flames of conspiracy around the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic. Generally speaking, I am supportive of their actions. Here's why: Priorities First and foremost, we have a present problem to deal with so let's start by putting our focus there. We have members who are and have been personally affected by COVID-19 and chances are this is just the beginning. If we are going to invest our mental and emotional energies into something, let's invest them in encouraging, supporting and helping our own community. Respect Again, we know that we already have members of TGO affected by this pandemic. So far they (and we) have been fortunate and it's turned out well. That could change. We don't want that to happen, but the statistical projections indicate that by the time the dust settles none of us will have many degrees of separation from someone that died as a result of the virus. I just think maybe it's a little disrespectful to the people currently fighting this virus and eventually to those who lose the battle for us to sit around and imagineer boogeymen behind a virus that science currently says evolved naturally. Stay In Your Lane, Bro Following right in behind the matter of respect is the simple fact that unless you're an educated, degreed, certified ass-kicking virologist, geneticist, research scientist, or have data from a respected source that is... you should probably stay in your lane. Remember the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020? That happened because social media said there was a shortage of toilet paper. So the people believed it, reacted like scared sheep, and ran right over the edge of the cliff with arms full of Charmin. There's no reason for us to allow the next big social media fear-fest to start with or take root on TGO. We can control what happens here, so our intent is to manage it so that there's at least one place you can visit online that doesn't feel like the lunatics are running the asylum. You're welcome for that. Even if you don't appreciate it right now. And So What If That Conspiracy Theory Is Accurate? The President, love him or hate him, has already said that there are going to be consequences on the other side of this current situation for the way that China mishandled this. Even if they didn't bio-engineer it, their government hid the outbreak from the world until it was busting out of their borders. So far the Prez has done everything he's said he would do... right or wrong... so we can be pretty confident that the US isn't going to just let this slide. So, even if the latest conspiracy theory is accurate... you and I can't do a thing about it. Establishing and maintaining a military to preserve our sovereignty, the strength of our borders, and the security of our interests is the one thing that the government should be doing. It's maybe the only reason the government should exist if you ask some. But they are equipped to do something about it. Not us. Not even Chuck Norris. Let's let the government handle the boogeyman. And if they need our input on that, there will be an appropriate time to tell our elected representatives what we'd like to see done. And I'm sure that our actual scientists will be following up on all credible leads that help them expedite a treatment or vaccine for COVID-19. So if that takes them back to a secret lair somewhere in Communist China where they're having unprotected sex with bats while eating live frogs... so be it. In the meantime, let's stay grounded in reality here. It's scary enough and it requires our full attention.
